1) How do I put money on my lunch card?

a. Bring cash to the cafeteria before school and give to a cafeteria worker.

b. Go to https://paypams.com/HomePage.aspx and put money on your card.

2) Can I use cash during lunch?

a. At first, yes, since you are new, but you need to put money on your card within two days of enrolling.

3) How much is lunch?

a. Plate lunch is $2.50

4) How do I apply for free/reduced lunch?

a. We have red application sheets (English and Spanish versions) that you fill out for all your students in RISD schools and turn back into the front office or apply online SchoolLunchApp.com.

b. It can sometimes take a few weeks for this to be processed and activated. Please plan to either pay for lunch at regular price or bring your lunch.

5) Who do I go to with questions about attendance?

a. See Ms. Love, the attendance secretary in the front office.

6) Can I use my cell phone during school?

a. Only when given permission from your teacher to use during class. If you use it when not given permission, your teacher will take it up and you will have to pay $15 to get it back.

b. Student may have cell phones, but they need to be on silent while at school.

7) What do I wear during PE class?

a. Most students bring athletic shorts/sweatpants and tennis shoes to change into during PE class. 8) Where do I go to get a locker?

a. Your locker will be assigned and printed on your schedule.

9) When do I have to be at school?

a. School is from 8:30am to 3:30 pm. If you get to school early, you must enter through the Auditorium doors (Ferndale side) and sit in the Auditorium until school starts. Students cannot enter the school before 7:50am.

b. A student must have a pass to attend tutoring before school.

10) When is tutoring?

a. Each teacher has their tutoring times posted outside their classroom. A full list can be found in the front office or by visiting the LHJH website.

b. Teachers with before school tutoring will come down to the Auditorium and get students who want to attend at 8am.

c. Students who attend after school tutoring must be in the teacher’s classroom before 3:40pm.

11) What happens when I lose my ID badge?

a. Go see Ms. Hernandez in the library to get a new one. It will cost $2.50 for a replacement or $5 with a new lanyard.

12) What happens if my student is absent?

a. Send a note with your student to turn into the front office within three days of the absence. After that, the absence goes as unexcused NO EXCEPTIONS!

b. If a student is absent for more than 3 days in a row, a doctor’s note is needed to excuse the absence.

c. After 5 absences, a warning letter will be sent home. After 10 absences, students will be filed on for truancy and will receive a summons from the court.

13) I want to see my student‘s counselor or principal. What do I do? a. Call 469-593-1600 and request to be transferred to them to make an appointment or send an email directly to them. If you show up without an appointment, you run the risk of a long wait time or the person being in a meeting or off campus. Best thing to do is always call ahead 

b. Students can come down to the counseling office and fill out a request to see their counselor before/after school or in between classes. Students are generally called down within 24 hours of their request.

14) Can I ride the bus home?

a. Yes, but only if you live more than 1.98 miles away from LHJH. A bus schedule is in this packet. Students must have a sticker on their badge to get on the bus. This is done during the enrollment process.

15) Do you have late buses?

a. Yes, we have late buses on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:45pm after school for tutoring only. If your student is attending tutoring, he/she will be given a pass from the teacher they were in tutoring with to get on the bus. (Please listen to the daily announcements for start date)!

16) What’s the best way to contact your child’s teacher?

a. RISD uses Edline to keep connected with Parents/Students. (See attached sheet for instructions to set up an account.)

b. Go to LHJH’s website http://www.edline.net/pages/Lake_Highlands_Junior_High and click on About LHJH and Staff Directory info for their phone number and email addresses. All phone numbers in RISD start with (469) 593-XXXX. All email addresses are [email protected].

17) How can I access my student’s grades/attendance? a. Parent Portal access can be requested at: http://www.risd.org/Group/Parents/RportalForParents.html.

18) How do I get information about what’s happening at LHJH?

a. Send a blank email to: [email protected] You will receive an email back with instructions on receiving emails from LHJH.

b. LHJH PTA website: http://www.lhjhpta.org/

19) What is Advisory?

a. Students attend advisory after lunch every day for 30 minutes. The purpose is to provide mentorship for social and emotional learning, strengthen student/teacher relationships, and assist with student engagement school climate by giving students a voice in a small setting.

b. Advisory helps with student organization, academic support through mini-lessons and study hall, Character Education and silent reading.

c. Students may also be pulled for tutoring during Advisory as needed.
