Airport shuttle times will be posted on Tuesday Night. Look for lists posted on your floors and in the elevators. Please see the office if your information is incorrect.

All students must be checked out of the program by 3:00 pm and must vacate the dorm by 5:00pm. Shuttle times will be posted in elevator and in hallway. Please be in the lobby 20 minutes prior to your departure.

Dr. Paul Lisnek

Dr. Lisnek is a multi‐Emmy Award winning television host, radio host, nationally recognized speaker, communications and negotiation trainer, and author. He hosts “Politics Tonight,” a nightly LIVE television talk show seen in Chicagoland on CLTV( the 24 hour sister news station to WGN‐TV). Dr. Lisnek also anchors “Newsmakers” on Headline News Channel, hosts “Political Update with Paul Lisnek,” (for which he received the 2009 Beacon Award for Best Political Program and the 2009 CableFax Award as Best Host of a Political Affairs series). He has interviewed Presidents, Secretaries of State, Governors, Senators, and other leading political, social and entertainment figures.

Scott Zucker, Sports Assistant Managing Editor for Enterprise and Investigation

Scott Zucker is USA TODAY Sports' assistant managing editor for enterprise and investigation. Scott's covered the NFL and Major League Baseball for USA TODAY and USA TODAY Sports Weekly.

Sarah Menke‐Fish, Professor Asst. Professor Sarah Menke‐Fish is a master teacher in the School of Communication. She serves as associate director for the Center for Environmental Filmmaking, launched and directs Discover the World of Communication, a summer program that brings high school students from around the world to AU and U.C. Berkeley for intense, hands‐on courses in environmental communication, video production, screen writing and journalism. Prior to joining the SOC faculty, Menke‐Fish coordinated Montgomery County Public Schools' Humanities and Communication Magnet Program. She has won numerous awards for educational documentaries produced with middle school and high school students, including CINE awards for If You Change Your Mind and Remotely Science. She and her students received the Presidential Environmental Youth Award for Trash: What A Waste, a comprehensive look at recycling. In 2005 she was selected Faculty Member of the Year by the AU Student Confederation; in 2002, she received American University's award for Outstanding Teaching in an Adjunct Position. Ned MacFadden, Professor

Ned MacFadden was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated in 1993 with a degree in Visual Arts from University of Maryland–Baltimore County. He teaches Media Productions at Eastern Middle School's Humanities and Communication Arts Magnet in Silver Spring, Maryland. He has freelanced as a cinematographer, worked as a portrait photographer, and taught animation workshops at the Capitol Children's Museum. This will be Ned’s sixth summer teaching Screenwriting and Video Production for DWC. Ned’s work has been shown at Maryland Art Place, Theater Project, Homebody, Good Love, The Great Frame Up, Left Bank, Coldwell Banker, Dumbarton, Touchstone Gallery and the Oregon Ballet Theater. He lives in Olney, Maryland with his wife, Melanie, and daughter, Lauren.

Alison Raffaldt, Professor

Alison Raffaldt is an MFA graduate of the School of Communication’s Film & Media Arts Program at American University. She worked from 2001‐2004 as producer, writer, and editor for the weekly television program, “The Environmental Journal,” in Saint Paul, MN. From 2004‐2008 she owned a production company in Kannapolis, NC that produced documentaries on subjects such as “Community Theatre,” “Buddhism,” and numerous short “vanity” documentaries.

Patrick Flynn, Professor

Patrick Flynn is an award‐winning filmmaker and playwright from Wilmington, Delaware. His films have been shown in L.A., his plays have been staged in New York, and he spent a week in Paris one night. Now he primarily makes the best web content around with actors from 30 Rock, Chuck, Parks & Recreation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Scrubs, FlashForward, Lie to Me, and the E! Network. Patrick was the first student selected by American University to be mentored by Academy Award‐winning director Barry Levinson. He is represented by Abrams Artists Agency’s New Media department.

Greg Smith, Professor

Greg Smith has worked as a producer, director, sound designer and post‐production editor on more than 60 live action and animated feature films, documentaries and music videos for companies including IMAX, Lucasfilm, Paramount, Warner Bros. and National Geographic. He currently owns and operates Pros from Dover Productions, a film and music production company based in Rockville, Maryland. As a journalist, Greg has held senior staff positions at National Public Radio and CBS News and is a staff recipient of two of journalism’s highest honors: the George Foster Peabody and Alfred I. duPont awards. On the music side, Greg has written and recorded six solo albums of original music, theme music for a number of programs on NPR and CBS, as well as several film soundtracks. Greg is an adjunct professor of film at the American University and a seminar instructor for the Montgomery County School System in Maryland. In May 2010, he earned a Master’s Degree in Film Production and in May 2012 he earned his MFA, both from American University.

Josh Barr, Professor

Josh Barr has worked for since October 1995. He is a 1994 graduate of Lafayette College, where he majored in American Studies. Before coming to the Post, he interned as a reporter at The Express‐Times in Easton, Pennsylvania, and was a reporter and sports editor at the Journal Messenger in Manassas. At the Post, he has written about the Redskins, Capitals and Wizards; covered the Orioles, Navy football and University of Maryland football and basketball as well as NASCAR racing. He

currently writes about high school sports and college recruiting.

David Ruck, Professor

David has been involved with numerous documentary and feature film productions. He holds an MFA from American University in Film & Electronic Media, works with for‐profit and non‐profit clients, and is committed to high‐quality work and education. David has filmed Maoists in the Himalayas of Nepal, rocket launches at Kennedy Space Center, documented the polluting practices of a nefarious chemical company, dove on the oldest shipwreck in the Great Lakes with an international team of archeologists, and had his images featured in , Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, San Francisco Chronicle, and the Wall Street Journal, among others. Currently, David is in the early stages of promoting his documentary film "I want to be an Astronaut", which had its debut aboard the International Space Station on March 20, 2014. The film will premiere in a public venue in the spring/summer of 2014. He plans to continue to produce documentary films while teaching at the collegiate level. His expertise lie in media, journalism, documentary, producing, and production.

Gemma Puglisi, Professor

Gemma Puglisi is an award‐winning media strategist and producer with more than 25 years of experience. During her career she has worked in broadcast news, public relations, entertainment and the financial sector, where she was a market reporter/media relations specialist for NASDAQ. Her SOC classes have won recognition from the Washington Post, the Washington Times, the Washington Mystics of the WNBA and other organizations. Puglisi is often sought as an expert on crisis public relations, media issues, and women in communications. In 2006, she received the Order of the Star and was knighted by the Republic of Italy for her contributions to education and promoting Italian language and culture.

Iwan Bagus, Professor

Iwan Bagus was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. He began his career on the other side of the camera, working as a model in South East Asia for more than 10 years. While modeling, he received a B.A. in Economics in Jakarta and before he moved to Washington, D.C. to pursue his education further. He earned his MS in Engineering from George Washington University and MA in Film Production from American University.

Jan Schaffer, Professor

As SOC's Entrepreneur in Residence, Jan Schaffer helped to launch the school's MA in Media Entrepreneurship program for working professionals. She teaches MAME's Seminar in Media Entrepreneurship. She is also executive director of J‐Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism and one of the nation’s leading thinkers in the journalism reform movement. A former Business Editor and a winner for The Philadelphia Inquirer, she left daily journalism in 1994 to lead pioneering journalism initiatives in the areas of civic journalism, interactive and participatory journalism and citizen media ventures. She launched J‐Lab in 2002 at the University of Maryland’s College of Journalism to help newsrooms use innovative computer technologies to engage people in important public issues. As a federal court reporter, she helped write a series that won freedom for a man wrongly convicted of five murders. The stories led to the civil rights convictions of six Philadelphia homicide detectives and won several national journalism awards, including the 1978 Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Public Service. Ann Timmons, Professor

Ann Timmons (http://www.anntimmons.com/) has more than 30 years' experience as a professional stage and screen actor, voice‐ over talent, and corporate spokesperson. Ann has been an assistant professor in the Theatre and Speech Communications Departments of the City University of New York, the University of the District of Columbia, and American University. Currently she leads acting workshops for adults in Arlington, Virginia. Ann consults as a valued speech coach to several private clients, non‐ profits, and businesses. She won a number of grants and commissions for her original plays, and has directed many of the Washington’s finest professional actors as well as students in public and private schools. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wellesley College, Ann received her Master of Fine Arts in Theatre from the University of Illinois.
