See the Student Handbook for procedures concerning attendance irregularities. (BP/AP 5075)

B. All Students need to log into the Canvas (sjdc.instructure.com) component of this class and accept the syllabus, if this is not done by the end of the first day, you will be dropped for other students to add the class. You use your Delta email username (characters BEFORE the @) and password. If you get a message to create a CCCID please do so.

E. During the semester, if tardiness becomes an issue, the teacher will lock the door five (5) minutes after the start of class and anyone not in class will be considered absent for that class period.

F. If individual health or family emergencies put you at risk of being dropped, please contact the professor at 954-5819 to discuss the situation.

G. There is no need to call the professor if a single lecture class meeting is to be missed.

All CyberQuizzes for the unit are due at midnight on the day indicated. The quizzes will open 48 hours before the due date time. (If you want the quizzes opened early, just email me and I can do that.) There are NO make-ups for Pop Quizzes, CyberQuizzes, or Homework. 4. Any form of cheating or copying on exams or assignments will result in a "0" for the exam or assignment and the student’s name will be given to the Vice-President of Student Services for violation of the Student Code of Conduct.

C. Assignments: 1. To submit papers/assignments students must go to www.turnitin.com , if you don’t have a user id already, click on New Users. This is similar to creating an email account. I recommend using your Delta e-mail and password for your login, but the password needs to be alphanumeric with a capitol. You will enter the class ID# 16961820 and the class Password 59808 (the class section#). When ready to submit your paper you will upload it to turnitin.com. I recommend you play with this prior to submitting your final draft. Make sure you get a receipt when you upload your assignment (your receipt will have your paper submission ID#) Your assignment will be graded online. You will be able to check the status of your assignment after it is graded and see what grade you earned and the teacher’s comments. (FYI: Google docs does not always upload to turnitin.com the way it looks on your computer; this may not be a good option to use as you may lose formatting points.)

This is an important paper ---don't lose it --- refer to it often! SL 002 - Elementary ASL-Shima 206 Spring 2018 #59808 Mon 5:00-5:22 Office: Shima 209 Professor: Charlene Nunes AND 3 hours online with Canvas Phone: 209-954-5819 San Joaquin Delta College email: [email protected]

Side note: I allow you to upload as many times as you would like before the due date. Each time you upload it writes over/erases the old copy. It can be a good strategy to upload your drafts, so if your computer crashes, I can get you your most recent copy from turnitin.com.

2. BOOK REVIEW: Submit to www.turnitin.com a book review on any book from the list on the professor’s web page. Make sure to include a summary; What you think (pro’s/con’s) about the book and how it is relevant to Deaf Culture; and if you would recommend it and why or why not. This will be done in MLA format. Make sure you cite your sources and have a works cited page. The grading sheet used is on the professor’s web site. See attached schedule for due date.

3. PRESENTATION Students will create a story using topics related to SL 002. The story will be a memory of a vacation or memorable event, NOT a storybook or song. ASL usage will be evaluated throughout the story with more details given in class.

OR a fable the professor assigns from unit 12. This will be determined by the professor as the semester progresses

A topic and outline will be due; this will be videotaped in class. Students will be required to view their videotape and turn in their evaluation (available on professors’ web page).

Students will upload the video of their presentation/story. During videotaping make sure you are clearly visible with enough light to see your facial expressions and non-manual markers. This is to be recorded with volume on and with NO editing. Make sure you are not blurry, sometimes web cams can be blurry if you are too close as they try to focus on your moving hands...back up and this usually resolves the issue. You will then upload this to Canvas by the due date. LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. By not turning the recording in by the due date you will be actively earning a zero.

*If the evaluation is not done a zero will be given for a grade. See attached schedule for due dates . 4. Assignments uploaded to www.Turnitin.com/Canvas late will be decreased by one full grade EACH DAY (NOT class) they are late. Assignments will not be accepted in hard copy.

E. There will be opportunities for extra credit. Each extra credit activity (5 points) must be an approved activity by the professor or Deaf Socials from www.norcalcenter.org. You must provide ‘proof’ (receipt) of attendance for these activities. You will need to: type one page of your experiences, what you saw, and name two (2) Deaf people you met and some detailed information about them.

** Extra credit can only be earned if, at the end of the course, all class assignments have been turned in and you have an account with CyberASL. Extra credit must be turned in within ONE WEEK after it occurs. IF at the drop date you have not regularly attended Deaf events you can NOT start (It is NOT meant as a way to save a failing grade.) No extra credit can be earned or turned in after our last class of the semester.

V. Tutoring and Reference Materials A. A. For students that have access to the internet there are several on line dictionaries. There are also several links that may help you from the professor’s web page. We also have a Sign Language Lab, SL 71 or SL 72 available, this is HIGHLY recommended. In this lab you can do your homework, bring a laptop or practice with other students, and you always have a teacher available when you do not understand something or need assistance.

B. For assistance in writing class assignments there is a writing lab available in Holt 201 for FREE.

VI. Catalog Statement, Course Outcomes & Objectives: This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual/gestural language used by Deaf people in the United States and Canada. Course will emphasize visual readiness skills in the first few weeks as students learn to recognize and express spatial relationships, use appropriate facial expressions and body movements, respond to commands and learn to visualize things in the environment. Communicative functions, vocabulary, grammar and cultural aspects of the Deaf community will be introduced and studied throughout the course. Students will demonstrate clear and precise oral expression
