ONE DAY ENFORCEMENT OF “OPERATION AIR, LAND AND SPEED” CONCLUDES WITH 3,000 PLUS SUMMONSES AND ARRESTS Safety Program Resulted in Zero Traffic Fatalities Along Targeted Interstates

RICHMOND – Thousands of traffic violators received citations during a one-day traffic safety program that yielded 3,033 total summonses and arrests as part of Operation Air, Land and Speed. The specialized enforcement initiative took place Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, and included Interstates 81, 95, 64, 66 and 85. It was the first time the traffic safety program has targeted simultaneously this many interstates in the Commonwealth. Troopers patrolled the entire length of each interstate. There were no fatal traffic crashes reported on any of the selected interstates during the entire operation.

Virginia State Police troopers cited 1,460 speeders and 455 reckless drivers during the 10-hour operation on all five interstates combined. Three motorists were arrested for drunk driving and 103 individuals were cited for failing to wear seat belts. In addition, there were 11 felony and drug arrests. The following is a breakdown per interstate during the Operation Air, Land and Speed project:

The last time the special enforcement project was conducted was in August 2012 which yielded 2,579 total summonses and arrests. Operation Air, Land & Speed strictly concentrates on interstate corridors across Virginia.

Funds generated from summonses issued by state police go directly to court fees and the state’s Literary Fund, which benefits public school construction, technology funding and teacher retirement.

The comprehensive enforcement project utilized troopers, supervisors and motor carrier troopers. State police operational duties on other interstates, primary and secondary roads were not affected during the operation. Funding for the enforcement initiative was provided through federal highway safety monies.
