Experimentation in Hunter's TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM Herbert C. Schueler The Teacher Education Program at Hunter College who by 1970 will represent one of every two children is quite different now from what it was a short ten years enrolled in our urban public schools. Teachers College, Columbia University Working Papers in TESOL & Applied Linguistics, 2014, Vol. 14, No. 1, pp. 28-30 The Forum edTPA: An Assessment that Reduces the Quality of Teacher Education Stephanie Chiu Hunter College, City University of New York As one of the first students in my TESOL teacher education program to complete my edTPA submission, I recently shared my experience with a class where the majority of the students were at the beginning of their program. Afterwards, one of my classmates expressed that while my presentation was informative, it was also very depressing. My student teaching seminar this past semester should have been one of the most valuable and insightful experiences of my teacher development program. My class consisted of peers whom I have grown to respect over the course of our program, and a legendary professor who is able to espouse the ideals of teaching and working with emergent bilinguals and their families, while also tackling the realities of teaching in an urban public school. Nonetheless, my peers and I ended the semester describing our edTPA-focused student teaching seminar not as “inspiring” or “practical for our teaching,” but rather as “painful” and “as smooth as possible” considering the circumstances. Pre-service teachers should be taught how to use teaching and learning as opportunities for self-empowerment and advancing social justice. We should be taught how to critically reflect on issues of identity, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality, as well as question the historical, sociocultural, and political contexts in which education is situated. Our student teaching seminar should be a supportive space to share successes and challenges, to discuss strategies, and to troubleshoot problems. -

We are in Riverdale. We’re interviewing George Avakian. There’s so many things to say about you, I’m just going to say George Avakian and ask you first, why jazz? Avakian: I think it happened because I was born abroad, and among the things that came into my consciousness as I was growing up was American popular music, and then it drifted in the direction of jazz through popular dance bands, such as the Casa Loma Orchestra, which I heard about through the guys who were hanging around the home of our neighbor at Greenwood Lake, which is where we went in the summers. We had a house on the lake. Our next-door neighbors had two daughters, one of whom was my age and very pretty, Dorothy Caulfield, who incidentally is responsible for Holden Caulfield’s last name, because J. D. Salinger got to know her and was very fond of her, named Holden after her family name. These boys came from the Teaneck area of New Jersey. So it was a short drive to Greenwood Lake on a straight line between New York and New Jersey. They had a dance band, the usual nine pieces: three brass, three saxophones, three rhythm. -

September 2010 News and Events of Interest to the Graduate Center Community 365 Fifth A list of Graduate Center events is available in the lobby or online at: www.gc.cuny.edu/events Twelve New Members Enrich the GC Faculty The Office of the Provost has announced that twelve new faculty members have joined the Graduate Center community, eight began service in the fall 2010 semester and four are expected in 2011. These appointments bring new strengths to the programs in earth and environmental sciences, English, Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian literatures and languages, linguistics, mathematics, political science, social welfare, sociology, and speech–language–hearing sciences. Uday Singh Mehta, distinguished professor of political science, is a renowned political theorist whose work encompasses a wide spectrum of philosophical traditions. He has worked on a range of issues including the relationship between freedom and imagination, liberalism’s complex link with colonialism and empire, and, more recently, war, peace, and nonviolence. He is the author of two books, The Anxiety of Freedom: Imagination and Individuality in the Political Thought of John Locke (Cornell University Press, 1992) and Liberalism and Empire: Nineteenth Century British Liberal Thought (University of Chicago Press, 1999), which won the J. David Greenstone Book Award from the American Political Science Association in 2001 for the best book in history and theory. In 2002, he was named a Carnegie Foundation scholar.
