Buenos Aires, marzo 2012 Sistemática y biogeografía del orden Cumacea (Crustacea: Peracarida) del Mar Argentino Resumen El orden Cumacea (Peracarida) agrupa más de 1.600 especies. Sin embargo, el conocimiento de los cumáceos del Mar Argentino es incompleto. El objetivo principal de esta tesis doctoral es avanzar en el estudio de dicha fauna. Se analizaron 156 muestras bentónicas recolectadas desde Uruguay hasta Tierra del Fuego (entre 2 y 150 m). Se identificaron 36 entidades taxonómicas, 4 familias y 12 géneros; 11 especies resultaron nuevas para la ciencia. La familia Diastylidae fue la más diversa y la mejor representada con 19 entidades taxonómicas pertenecientes a los géneros Anchistylis, Diastylis, Ekleptostylis, Makrokylindrus y Vemakylindrus. Se cita por primera vez al género Vemakylindrus para el área, y se extiende el intervalo de distribución de numerosas especies. Se describen cinco nuevas especies, Diastylis fabrizioi n. sp., D. sexpectinata n. sp., Diastylis n. sp. B, D. andeepae n. sp. y D. catalinae n. sp., las dos últimas del Mar de Weddell. Además, se completan las descripciones de: Diastylis hammoniae, D. planifrons, D. sympterygiae y D. geocostae. Se propone la sinonimia de Leptostylis (?) mancoides con D. hammoniae, y Diastylis manca es tratada como species inquirenda. Se confeccionan claves dicotómicas para separar las familias, géneros y las especies del gro. Diastylis del Mar Argentino. Se describe al copépodo nicothoideo Homoeoscelis meridionalis n. sp., que infesta las cámaras branquiales de Diastylis fabrizioi y D. planifrons, siendo este el primer registro del gro. Homoeoscelis para el Hemisferio Sur. La nueva especie se compara con H. minuta y H. frigida, y se presentan datos biológicos sobre esta asociación parásitoAhospedador. 0or <ltimo se da a conocer un listado de todas las especies del orden reportadas para el 3ar Ar entino, y se estudian sus afinidades faun!sticas a trav9s de la aplicaci$n del an#lisis cluster a datos de presencia/ausencia, utilizando el !ndice de SCrensen /pro rama 0RI3ER v.51. Estos an#lisis permitieron reconocer las dos provincias bio eo r#ficas de la plataforma ar entina: ar entina y ma all#nica. Systematic and biogeography of Cumacea (Crustacea: Peracarida) from the Argentine Sea Abstract The order Cumacea /0eracarida1 comprises over ..200 species. HoEever, our FnoEled e of the fauna from the Ar entine Sea is still incomplete. Therefore, the aim of the present thesis is to improve the taxonomy and bio eo raphy of the cumaceans from Ar entina. Approximately .53 benthic samples collected from Uru uay to Tierra del Fue o /2A.50 m1 Eere analyzed. As many as 32 nominal species, 8 families and .2 enera Eere identified, .. species Eere neE to science. The family Diastylidae presented not only the hi hest diversity but also the lar est abundance. A total of .9 species belon in to the enera Anchistylis, Diastylis, Ekleptostylis, Makrokylindrus and Vemakylindrus Eere identified. The enus Vemakylindrus is first recorded from Ar entina. The ran e of distribution of several species is extended. Five neE species Eere fully described: Diastylis fabrizioi n. sp., D. sexpectinata n. sp., Diastylis n. sp. B, D. andeepae n. sp. and D. catalinae n. sp., the last tEo from the Weddell Sea. The descriptions of other four diastylids are completed: Diastylis hammoniae, D. planifrons, D. sympterygiae and D. geocostae. Diastylis hammoniae is redescribed based on its type material, the synonymy of Leptostylis /?1 mancoides Eith Diastylis hammoniae is proposed and D. manca is treated as species inquirenda. Identification Feys to separate the families, enera and all the species of the enus Diastylis FnoEn from Ar entina are presented. The nicothoid copepod Homoeoscelis meridionalis n. sp. is fully described. It Eas found infestin the branquial chambers of Diastylis fabrizioi and D. planifrons. This is the first record of de enus Homoeoscelis from the Southern Hemisphere. The neE species is compared Eith Homoeoscelis minuta and H. frigida: and brief remarFs on this parasiteAhost association are iven. A list of all the species reported from the Ar entine Sea is presented. The faunistic affinities Eere studied usin the analyses of hierarchical clusterin , the SCrensen index Eas calculated based on the presence/absence species data /0RI3ER v.5 softEare1. The results of these faunistic analyses fit Eith the tEo bio eo raphic provinces reco nized for the Ar entine continental shelf: Ar entine and 3a ellan. In addition, South Deor ia Island presented a loE similarity Eith the localities of the 3a ellan 0rovince. Background Seagrasses (Zostera spp) are marine flowering plants that develop on sands and muds in sheltered intertidal and shallow subtidal areas. Seagrass beds are important marine habitats but are vulnerable to a range of human induced pressures. Their vulnerability and importance to habitat creation and ecological functioning is recognised in their inclusion on the recommended Priority Marine Features list for Scotland’s seas. Prior to this study, there were few confirmed records of Zostera in Orkney waters. This study combined a predictive modelling approach with boat-based surveys to enhance under- standing of seagrass distribution in Orkney and inform conservation management.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: During the study of the interstitial fauna from Cymodocea nodosa meadows and nearby sandy bottoms of the Canary Islands (Eastern Central Atlantic Ocean), six cumacean species were collected. Iphinoe inermis was recorded for the first time in the Atlantic Ocean and a new species, Iphinoe canariensis sp. nov., is described. During the monthly monitoring survey, cumaceans showed a low frequency of occurrence (25%) in the whole community. The two-year seasonal samplings showed higher cumacean densities in winter, when 77% of specimens were collected. Cumaceans were more abundant in the nearby sandy bottoms (62%) than in Cymodocea meadows, and in the upper layer of sediment than in the lower layers. Résumé: Cumacés interstitiels des fonds sableux et des herbiers à Cymodoce des Iles Canaries. Six espèces de cumacés ont été récoltées aux îles Canaries dans le cadre d’une étude sur la faune interstitielle provenant des herbiers à Cymodocea no- dosa et des fonds sableux limitrophes. Iphinoe inermis est signalée pour la première fois dans l’océan Atlantique et une nou- velle espèce, Iphinoe canariensis sp. nov. est décrite. Les échantillonnages mensuels réalisés durant deux années montrent que les cumacés sont relativement peu fréquents au sein de la communauté (25 %) et plus abondants en hiver.

The differences between an estuarine and marine environment seem to be the main reason responsible for the composition and distribution of the crustaceans along the study zone. The Guadiana estuary has shown high number of species in comparison with other nearby estuaries and this richness seems jus- tified by the scarce influence of pollutants (most of them have shown low or moderate values) and their hydrodynamic and granulometric characteristics (76 species were found, 39 in the estuarine area). A gradient of enrichment and structuring of the assemblages was shown from the upstream to the marine zones and a spatial segregation of species was found along this estuarine environmental gradient, e.g. the amphipod Corophium multisetosum and the isopod Cyathura carinata in the upper estuary; the amphipod Bathyporeia cf. pilosa and the isopods Lekanesphera levii and Saduriella losadoi in the middle estuary; the amphipod Melita hergensis in the mouth; and a high number of species in the marine area. Since the Alqueva Dam will reduce the river discharges and may cause changes in the abiotic characteristics such as granulometry of sediments or salinity, this study establishes a baseline against which a monitoring programme or follow-up studies could measure any significant effects of the dam or related impacts.

The recent discovery of material in Irish waters, and in the North Sea, confirms the presence of the species in the North East Atlantic and provides the opportunity to present a full redescription. A new genus, Monopseudocuma, is erected to accommodate the species. A neotype is designated from the West coast of Ireland. Sars, 1878 is the second smallest of the eight cumacean families. B|cescu (1992) catalogued 28 species and five subspecies in twelve genera. The majority of species were described by the early 20th century by G.O. Sars primarily (e.g. G.O. Sars 1879; G.O. Sars 1894; G.O. Sars 1897; G.O. Sars 1900; Baker 1912; Derzhavin 1912; G.O. Sars 1914). Most of these were from the Ponto–Caspian region, which includes the Caspian Sea, Black Sea, Sea of Azov, and their associated rivers.
