Study of Caste
H STUDY OF CASTE BY P. LAKSHMI NARASU Author of "The Essence of Buddhism' MADRAS K. V. RAGHAVULU, PUBLISHER, 367, Mint Street. Printed by V. RAMASWAMY SASTRULU & SONS at the " VAVILLA " PRESS, MADRAS—1932. f All Rights Reservtd by th* Author. To SIR PITTI THY AG A ROY A as an expression of friendship and gratitude. FOREWORD. This book is based on arfcioles origiDally contributed to a weekly of Madras devoted to social reform. At the time of their appearance a wish was expressed that they might be given a more permanent form by elaboration into a book. In fulfilment of this wish I have revised those articles and enlarged them with much additional matter. The book makes no pretentions either to erudition or to originality. Though I have not given references, I have laid under contribution much of the literature bearing on the subject of caste. The book is addressed not to savants, but solely to such mea of common sense as have been drawn to consider the ques tion of caste. He who fights social intolerance, slavery and injustice need offer neither substitute nor constructive theory. Caste is a crippli^jg disease. The physicians duty is to guard against diseasb or destroy it. Yet no one considers the work of the physician as negative. The attainment of liberty and justice has always been a negative process. With out rebelling against social institutions and destroying custom there can never be the tree exercise of liberty and justice. A physician can, however, be of no use where there is no vita lity. -

The statement sums up the contribution of Census Organisation which has been working in the field of mapping in the country. The Census Commissionarate of India has been working in the field of cartography and mapping since 1872. A major shift was witnessed during Census 1961 when the office had got a permanent footing. For the first time, the census maps were published in the form of 'Census Atlases' in the decade 1961-71. Alongwith the national volume, atlases of states and union territories were also published. -

Reh' Soil in Some Parts of U.P
MINERALOGY AND GEOCHEMISTRY OF 'REH' SOIL IN SOME PARTS OF U.P. By MOHD. AJMAL ANSARI M. Sc., P. G. Dip. Hydrogeol, M. Phil. (Alig.) THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DECREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN GEOLOGY AT THE ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY, ALIGARH (INDIA) 198 7 KV L^'V T3480 ABSTRACT As a part of the arid and. semi-arid landscape, saline and alkali lands have been known to occur in India from time immemorial, more prominently in the Indus and Gangetic plains in the north. The vernacular names 'Reh', 'Usar' or 'Kallar' have been in use for the saline efflorescence forming a crust on the surface of the soils during the dry periods. The effloresconce essentially consists of a mixture of sodium carbonate, bicar- bonate, chloride and sulphate, together with varying proportion; of calcium and magnesium salts. In the Indo-Gangetic Plain, the state of Uttar Pradesh (u.P.) is particularly affected by these deposits, most of which occur along certain belts which generally run along NW-SE. The salinity and alkalinity in the soils hamper crop production which affect the country's economy. It has been estimated that approximately 8 million hectares of land (actual extent may be much larger) has been afflicted by this malady. The irrportance of Indo-Gangetic alluvial plains to agriculture is immense. Therefore, the rate at which the soils are degrading (becoming saline and alkaline) is alarming and requires urgent measure to control and rectify this. Aligarh lies on one of the worst affected 'Usar' belts of U.P., therefore, this part of the belt was selected for detailed investigations^mainly, the mineralogical and geochemical aspects. -

CASTES AND TRIBES rsf SOUTHERN INDIA E, THURSTON THE LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA LOS ANGELES CASTES AND TRIBES OF SOUTHERN INDIA CASTES AND TRIBES OF SOUTHERN INDIA BY EDGAR THURSTON, C.I.E., Madras Government Superintendent, Museum ; Correspondant Etranger, Socie'te'id'Anthropologie de Paris; Socio Corrispondant, Societa Romana di Anthropologia. ASSISTED BY K. RANGACHARI, M.A., of the Madras Government Museum. VOLUME VI P TO S GOVERNMENT PRESS, MADRAS 1909. College Library CASTES AND TRIBES OF SOUTHERN INDIA. VOLUME VI. filALLI OR VANNIYAN. Writing concerning this caste the Census Superintendent, 1871* records that "a book has been written by a native to show that the Pallis (Pullies or Vanniar) of the south are descendants of the fire races (Agnikulas) of the Kshatriyas, and that the Tamil Pullies were at one time the shepherd kings of Egypt." At the time of the census, 1871, a petition was submitted to Government by representatives of the caste, praying that they might be classified as Kshatriyas, and twenty years later, in con- nection with the census, 1891, a book entitled ' Vannikula ' Vilakkam : a treatise on the Vanniya caste, was compiled by Mr. T. Aiyakannu Nayakar, in support of the caste claim to be returned as Kshatriyas, for details concerning which claim I must refer the reader to the book itself. In 1907, a book entitled Varuna Darpanam (Mirror of Castes) was published, in which an attempt is made to connect the caste with the Pallavas. Kulasekhara, one of the early Travancore kings, and one of the most renowned Alwars reverenced by the Sri Vaishnava community in Southern India, is claimed by the Pallis as a king of their caste. -
