Mountains and Rivers Sutra
The Mountains and Waters Sūtra (Sansuikyō) The chapter titles and the chapter and paragraph numbers are added for the convenience of the readers. They exist neither in Dōgen’s original nor in Bielefeldts translation. 1. MOUNTAINS AND WATERS ARE THE EXPRESSION OF OLD BUDDHAS (I) These mountains and waters of the present are the expression of the old buddhas. Each, abiding in its own Dharma state, fulfills exhaustive virtues. Because they are the circumstances "prior to the kalpa of emptiness," they are this life of the present; because they are the self "before the germination of any subtle sign," they are liberated in their actual occurrence. Since the virtues of the mountain are high and broad, the spiritual power to ride the clouds is always mastered from the mountains, and the marvelous ability to follow the wind is inevitably liberated from the mountains. 2. MOUNTAINS 2-1. Blue Mountains Are Constantly Walking (2) Preceptor Kai of Mount Dayang1 addressed the assembly, saying, "The blue mountains are constantly walking. The stone woman gives birth to a child at night.” (3) The mountains lack none of their proper virtues; hence, they are constantly at rest and constantly walking. We must devote ourselves to a detailed study of this virtue of walking. Since the walking of the mountains should be like that of people, one ought not doubt that the mountains walk simply because they may not appear to stride like humans. (4) This saying of the buddha and ancestor [Daokai] has pointed out walking; it has got what is fundamental, and we should thoroughly investigate this address on "constant walking." It is constant because it is walking. -

Preface The doyen of Buddhism in England, Christmas Humphreys (1901- 1983), once wrote in his book, Zen Buddhism, published in 1947, that ‘The “transmission” of Zen is a matter of prime difficulty…Zen… is ex hypothesi beyond the intellect…’1 Ten years later the Japanese Zen priest Sohaku Ogata (1901-1973) from Chotoko-in, in the Shokufuji Temple compound in Kyoto came to visit the London Buddhist Society that Humphreys had founded in the 1920s. The two men had met in Kyoto just after the Second World War. Sohaku Ogata’s ambition was to translate the whole of the Song dynasty Chan (Zen) text Records of the Transmission of the Lamp (hereafter CDL), which has never been fully translated into any language (except modern Chinese), into English. Before his death Sohaku Ogata managed to translate the first ten books of this mammoth work.2 The importance of this compendium had not gone unnoticed. -

Solonin Aossciate Professor, St. Petersburg University Summary The present paper is an attempt to introduce some of the unique source material covering the aspects of development of Chinese Chan and Huayan Buddhism in the Tangut State of the Great Xia. Insofar, the author has been engaged in the study of the Tangut Chan manuscripts in St. Petersburg collection, which numbers up to 10,000 items. A throughout survey of the Tangut collection, has revealed, that the Chinese Buddhist schools, current in Xi-xia, Huayen-Chan trend, represented with the school of Guifeng Zong-mi was predominant. The present paper's main conclusion was that the Huayan-Chan lineage had not been interrupted after the Huichang Prosecution of Buddhism, but had certain development in the North-Western China and prosperous in Xi-xia at least until the mid. 12th century. The author here goes in much detail concerning the basic shift from Shen-hui to Ma-zu, that occured within Huayan-Chan tradition in Xi-xia and earlier, in China proper, and brings about certian unique Tangut texts as the evidence for that process. Thus the paper contains a translation of Tangut text The Mirror, notes on the‘Basic Intentions of the Hongzhou Masters’ and other lengthy references to the related Tangut texts, faximile reprint of a portion of the Tangut translation of Zong-mi Chan Preface, index of Tangut characters with the Chinese equivalents. -

As Shakespeare does with English, Dōgen utterly transforms dogen’s the language of Zen, using it in novel and extraordinarily beautiful ways to point to everything important in the religious life. Dōgen is known for two major works. The first work, the massive Shōbōgenzō (“Treasury of the True Dharma Eye”), represents his early teachings and exists in many English translations; the second work, the Eihei extensive Kōroku, is a collection of all his later teachings, includ- ing short formal discourses to the monks training at his temple, longer informal talks, and kōans with his com- mentaries, as well as short appreciatory verses on various topics. The Shōbōgenzō has received enormous atten- tion in Western Zen and Western Zen literature, and record with the publication of this watershed volume, the Eihei Kōroku is now rising to commensurate stature. Dōgen’s Extensive Record is the first-ever complete translation of a translation of the this monumental work into English—a classic that belongs in the library of any student of Zen and any eihei koroku scholar of world religion. It is especially rich for the time between 300 and 1000 CE, when the four major collections of “Biographies of Eminent Monks” (gaoseng zhuan) allow us to date and locate the relationships of individuals to a degree unimaginable for the religious history of Europe or India in that period. Using open data from the Gaoseng Zhuan projects conducted between 2007 and 2012 at Dharma Drum Mountain, Taiwan, this article applies centrality measures to identify key players in the currently available data.
