By A LBERT WELLES, PRESIDENT O P THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OP HERALDRY AND GENBALOGICAL REGISTRY OP NEW YORK. (ASSISTED B Y H. H. CLEMENTS, ESQ.) BJHttl)n a account of tljt Wu\\t% JFamtlg fn fHassssacIjusrtta, By H ENRY WINTHROP SARGENT, OP B OSTON. BOSTON: P RESS OF JOHN WILSON AND SON. 1874. II )2 < 7-'/ < INTRODUCTION. ^/^Sn i Chronology, so in Genealogy there are certain landmarks. Thus,n i France, to trace back to Charlemagne is the desideratum ; in England, to the Norman Con quest; and in the New England States, to the Puri tans, or first settlement of the country. The origin of but few nations or individuals can be precisely traced or ascertained. " The lapse of ages is inces santly thickening the veil which is spread over remote objects and events. The light becomes fainter as we proceed, the objects more obscure and uncertain, until Time at length spreads her sable mantle over them, and we behold them no more." Its i stated, among the librarians and officers of historical institutions in the Eastern States, that not two per cent of the inquirers succeed in establishing the connection between their ancestors here and the family abroad. Most of the emigrants 2 I NTROD UCTION. fled f rom religious persecution, and, instead of pro mulgating their derivation or history, rather sup pressed all knowledge of it, so that their descendants had no direct traditions. On this account it be comes almost necessary to give the descendants separately of each of the original emigrants to this country, with a general account of the family abroad, as far as it can be learned from history, without trusting too much to tradition, which however is often the only source of information on these matters.

There have, not unexpectedly, been considerable archival losses too, as some later vacancy inventories at York make clear: the Durham sede vacante register of Alexander Neville (1381) and accompanying visitation records; the York sede vacante register after Neville’s own translation in 1388; the register of Thomas Arundel (only the register of his vicars-general survives today), and the register of Robert Waldby (likewise only his vicar-general’s register is now extant) have all long disappeared.1 Some of these would also have included records of ordinations, now missing from the chronological sequence.

  • Bricks in the Wall: Springthorpe School
Maureen Ille & Diana Rose Bricks in the Wall: the story of Springthorpe School This book is DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF FRED NEWTON who died 26th June 2006, aged 88. Fred was a former pupil of the school from 1923 to 1932. When the school closed and the building became a Village Hall in 1951, he served for many years as the first Secretary of the Village Hall Executive Committee, and later as its Chairman. Acknowledgements: We wish to thank Thelma Fysh for her invaluable help in interviewing past pupils of the school. We are indebted to Michael Anyan for giving us access to his collection of books and documents, and for reading the draft of the book and offering many helpful suggestions. We are grateful to Sir Nicholas Bacon for allowing us to publish documents and letters from the Bacon collection in the Lincolnshire Archives. We further wish to thank all those others who have allowed us to use their photographs, documents and memories in the production of this book. This book has been produced with the help of a generous grant from RACoL (Regeneration Across Communities of Lincolnshire) with funds from the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund). © 2006 Diana Rose & Maureen Ille All rights reserved.
