However, apart from the old problems, new limitations and asymmetries have emerged that hinder the development of bilateral relations against the background of power shift and changing strategic environment in East Asia. The article seeks to assess how deep is Russia-Japan rapprochement, what are the motivations of the two countries, major limitations, both domestic and external, expectation asymmetries and misperception gaps. It discusses the developments after the agreement between Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in November 2018 to facilitate negotiations on a peace treaty and territorial issue based on the Soviet-Japanese Declaration of 1956, and how tangible is a breakthrough. -

REAFFIRMING RUSSIA’S REMOTE CONTROL: EXPLORING KREMLIN INFLUENCE ON TELEVISION COVERAGE OF RUSSIAN-JAPANESE RELATIONS AND THE SOUTHERN KURIL ISLANDS TERRITORIAL DISPUTE TINA BURRETT SOPHIA UNIVERSITY Abstract: This article examines Russian television coverage of Russo-Japanese relations and the Kuril Islands territorial dispute between October 2010 and February 2014. The article has three aims: to further understanding of Russian government influence over television; to illuminate Russian priorities in bilateral relations with Japan; and to assess the prospect of current territorial talks resulting in a compromise. While there are good economic and security incentives for both sides to agree to a settlement, nationalist framing of the territorial dispute on Russian television presents an obstacle to resolution. A territorial compromise would contradict television’s nationalist framing of the dispute and undermine Russian leaders’ credibility as defenders of territorial integrity. Findings suggest that public opinion as well as government influence shapes the content of Russian television reporting on the Kurils and relations with Japan. Stalin occupied the four islands, situated between the Japanese island of Hokkaido and Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, during the closing phase of World War II.1 For the nearly 70 years since then, the dispute has prevented Russia and Japan from signing a formal peace treaty. -

GEOLOGICAL MAP OF THE WORLD AT 1: 25,000,000 SCALE, THIRD EDITION - Compilator: Philippe Bouysse, 2006 ACTIVE AND RECENT VOLCANOES This list of 1508 volcanoes is taken from data of the Global Volcanism Program run by the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C., USA) and downloaded in April 2006 from the site www.volcano.si.edu/world/summary.cfm?sumpage=num. From the Smithsonian's list, 41 locations have been discarded due to a great deal of uncertainties, particularly as concerns doubtful submarine occurrences (mainly ship reports of the 19th and early 20th centuries). Also have been omitted submarine occurrences from the axes of "normal" oceanic accretionary ridges, i.e. not affected by hotspot activity. NOTES Volcano number: the numbering system was developped by the Catalog of Active Volcanoes of the World in the 1930s and followed on by the Smithsonian Institution, namely in the publication of T. Simkin & L.Siebert: Volcanoes of the World (1994). Name and Geographic situation: some complementary information has been provided concerning a more accurate geographic location of the volcano, e.g. in the case of smaller islands or due to political changes (as for Eritrea). Geographic coordinates: are listed in decimal parts of a degree. The position of volcano no. 104-10 (Tskhouk-Karckar, Armenia) was corrected (Lat. 39°.73 N instead of 35°.73 N). An asterisk (*) in column V.F. indicates the position of the center point of a broad volcanic field. Elevation: in meters, positive or negative for submarine volcanoes. The Purification of Victims: The Himeyuri Student Corps Through the Lens of Okinawa, Japan, and the U.S. 1945–1953 Daigo Shima Department of East Asian Studies McGill University, Montreal April 2015 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian Studies © Daigo Shima 2015 Abstract This thesis examines the stories based upon the Himeyuri Student Corps (hereinafter referred to as HSC), who were female Okinawan students working as assistant nurses on the battle- fields of Okinawa during the Asia-Pacific War. This work focuses on the different narratives which depicted the HSC, and the shifts in how the story of the HSC was narrated between 1945 and 1953. These shifts are analyzed through the various storytelling forms used to talk about the HSC, which include memoir, novelization, non-fiction work, film, and finally mu- sical revue. Although there were other narratives about the HSC created after 1953, the dis- cussion is limited to the period between 1945 and 1953, since it is the stated aim of this thesis to focus on the shift between the Occupation era (1945-1952) and Japan’s official comeback as an independent nation. The thesis thereby aims to shed light on how the images of the war dead of the Battle of Okinawa, and that of the female students in particular, were constructed and exploited within the complicated socio-political triangle between Okinawa, the Japanese mainland, and the United States. In this thesis, the words “purify” and “purification” are key terms.
