Chivers Collection D CHIV Museum of English Rural Life Chivers Collection D CHIV The records comprise Chivers' own research notes, that were the basis for his writings, and include his notes for the project; History With A Future. Combined with these records, are documents relating to the Shire Horse Society and local Shire Horse Societies, Stud records including many Stud Cards, and Show and Sale Catalogues. There is also a large Photograph Collection: The Donald Hanson Shire Horse Picture Library. Also related to the collection are many specialist books on the subject. The Collection covers the year’s c1750-1999. The physical extent of the collection is 35 linear metres. Introduction Keith Chivers held a lifelong interest in Shire Horses, which is displayed by his active work researching the breed, culminating in his numerous published works. His book, The Shire Horse, A History of the Breed, the Society and the Men, is regarded as the definitive history of these horses. He was also a regular contributor to the Shire Horse publications; Heavy Horse World, and Heavy Horse and Driving, from the 1970's up until his death in 1998. During the 1980's he played an important role in the Shire Horses Society's History With A Future project, which investigated the role of the Shire Horse in the modern world. He was also involved in establishing the Shire Horse Archive, where his own research notes were complimented by donations from individuals, and which he helped to run alongside his daughter Elizabeth. Richardson, S. Yorkshire, UK The Shire Horse is the most numerous and largest of the heavy horses found in Great Britain. The recognised colours in the breed are black, bay, brown and grey. The height of the stallions should be 17.2 hands at maturity with mares a hand smaller. However, many of the leading prizewinners are up to and over 18.00 hands. The characteristic of the Shire is the nice silky feather on the legs, obtained from crossing with Clydesdales in the early 50's to alleviate the grease problems in the older type Shire. More recently the market pressures are wanting white legs to make the best use of the action and presence of the breed in the show ring, particularly in turnout classes. The history of the breed goes back to the medieval "Great Horse" used in time of war to carry knights in armour weighing up to 400lbs.

AWe noticed he was off his feed and took his temperature yesterday afternoon. It was slightly elevated,@ trainer Brad Cox said. AIt=s just really bad timing being this close to the Derby. We drew blood on him [Sunday] morning and his white cell counts were a little high. We just can=t run him on Saturday with being a little off his game.@ The defection of the GI Arkansas Derby runner-up will allow GII Remsen S. winner Brooklyn Strong (Wicked Strong) to enter the Derby field. The Mark Schwartz colorbearer, most recently fifth in the Apr. 3 GII Wood Memorial, is scheduled to work at Parx Monday morning for trainer Daniel Velazquez and could ship into Churchill Downs Tuesday morning if all goes well. • List of Horse Breeds 1 List of Horse Breeds
List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". The breeds and types listed here are those that already have a Wikipedia article. For a more extensive list, see the List of all horse breeds in DAD-IS. Heavy or draft horse breeds For additional information, see horse breed, horse breeding and the individual articles listed below.
