He has visited more than 70 countries and regions, organized more than 10 international academic conferences, organized 79 international training courses on tropical agriculture for 3824 participants from more than 90 countries. He has promoted the establishment of long-term friendly and cooperative relations with more than 10 international organizations and research institutions, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), and the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). He made his institution designated as "FAO Reference Center for Tropical Agriculture Research and Training" by FAO in 2014. He also promoted CIAT and CATAS jointly found the international academic journal Tropical Grasslands (SCI), and recommended CIAT to win the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of Hainan Province in 2019. He has undertaken more than 30 international cooperation or national projects. Through these projects, 7 foreign technologies and more than 60 foreign experts were introduced, among whom there were two experts, Prof. Rainer Schutze Craft and Dr. Segenet Kelemu, won the Friendship Award of the Chinese Government, and two experts, Dr. Peter Karriage and Dr. Sukumar, won Hainan Coconut Island Award. In 2001, his institution was awarded as the Talent Introduction Demonstration and Promotion Base for Tropical Forage Breeding by the State Administration of Foreign Experts. Professor Guodao Liu has published more than 460 academic papers in Chinese and English in New Physiology, Acta Prataculturae Sinica and other academic journals. He has published 18 monographs, including Hainan Grass Records, Hainan Sedge Records, Hainan Forage Flora Records and China Tropical Forage Varieties Records, and edited 4 textbooks including Tropical Forage Cultivation and Tropical Crops Germplasm Resources. He edited 3 sets of popular science series, including Practical Technologies for Animal Husbandry in Southern Agricultural Areas of China. He, as the first or the main completion person, has won more than 30 provincial and ministerial level science and technology awards (including 8 first prizes), including the First Prize of Chinese Agricultural Science and Technology Award , the Chinese Agricultural Science and Technology Team Award, the Chinese Agricultural Science Popularization Award from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Natural Science Special Award, the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award, and the First Prize of Science and Technology Achievement Transformation Award from Hainan Province. He, as the first or the main completion person, has bred 29 officially recognized forage varieties including Reyan No. 4 King Grass, and obtained 6 national invention patents and 10 national utility model patents. Has bred 29 officially recognized forage varieties, and obtained 2 new varieties protection rights. Reyan No.4 King Grass is the most important mowing grass in Southern China with an annual yield of 15000-25000 kg for fresh grass per mu, which has been selected to enter the Ten-Year Achievement Exhibition of Agricultural Development in China, and has become the main forage for house feeding and breeding in Southern China. Stylosanthes is the most important tropical legume forage in Southern China. There is a saying "Alfalfa in the North and Stylosanthes in the South". It has become the dominant grass and forage variety in the South. The new varieties have been popularized for more than 38 million mu, with remarkable economic, ecological and social benefits..

Since China has a vast territory, different regions formed a variety of regional cultures with different natural environments and era evolutions. Historical and cultural towns and villages not only exist as individual entities, but also as integrated urban and rural settlements and regional cultures. This paper presents the methodologies for the protection of historical towns and villages in the phase of systematic planning in Hainan Province. The research begin with looking at Hainan’s regional culture, adopting the research method of anthropology and regional heritage to retrace the culture of Hainan’s towns and villages, analysing the status quo, and on this basis, building a framework of Hainan historical towns and villages in promotion of its rational protection and development. Keywords: historical and cultural towns and villages, land use, Meso-scale space unit, non-motor- vehicle travel. 1 INTRODUCTION Hainan is a tropical island in southern China with beautiful scenery; its special natural environment has created an exotic culture. Today, most people see Hainan as an international scenic spot; however, less attention is paid to Hainan’s culture and traditions, which, to some extent, results in a lack of cultural construction. Historical and cultural villages and towns are important space carriers of Hainan culture; therefore, the construction of provincial-level historical and cultural towns and villages to protect the historical and cultural heritage of Hainan is essential.

    NOTES AND NEW TECHNIQUES THE SAPPHIRES OF PENGLAI, HAINAN ISLAND, CHINA By Wang Furui The sapphire deposit at Penglai, on Hainan Island, is potentially the largest in China. Gem-quality sap- phires, at least one as large as 35.5 ct, have been found in alluvial gravels approximately 2 km south- east of the city of Penglai. Gem-quality zircon and a few pieces,of, what might be considered ruby have also been recovered in the course of the geologic study of this area, which has not yet been commer- cially developed. The average size of the sapphires is 2-5 mm. Tfiey are similar in appearance and gem- ological properties to sapphires from Australia, Thai- land, and Kampuchea. Figure 1. To date, several major occurrences have been identified, including Ming- xi, Liuhe, and Jiangsu Province. Background and proposition The achievement of equalization is a core idea of public service facilities for a city. It is also an important way to achieve society justice, reduce the disparity between urban and rural areas, the rich and the poor, as well as other negative impacts of imbalanced development. The approaches to achieve the equalization of public service facilities are quite different, depending on the main function, spatial pattern and population composition in a city. As one of China’s most representative tourist city, tourism has become the pillar industry in Sanya, which is the strongest drive for economic growth and also a major factor impacts its sustainable progress. After ten years of growth, Sanya is experiencing an explosive increase in terms of both its tourist number and tourist production value. Seasonal population agglomeration brings huge challenges to the supply of public service facilities. Problems such as land for public service facilities occupied by the overwhelming development of tourism real estate, inadequate supply and low quality of service facilities for local residents are becoming more and more serious. Under the background of seasonal population vibration and periodic demand variety on public service facilities, how to satisfy the different needs of tourists, migrant people and local residents, taken the population distribution as a point of breakthrough, becomes the primary aspect to rationally allocate the public service facilities in the tourism districts featured by dramatic population change.

    CHAPTER 3 Tourism as a Territorial Strategy in the South China Sea Ian Rowen INTRODUCTION The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is deploying tourism as a tool in its territorialization program for the South China Sea, reconfiguring geopo- litical imaginaries and popular political discourse, and developing new lei- sure spaces, economies, and infrastructure. This approach is consistent with China’s deployment of outbound tourism to achieve political objec- tives in other regions, both within and far beyond its periphery. Outbound tourism from China has been used as an economic lever for extracting political concessions not only in nearby Taiwan, but as far away as Canada. At the same time that tourism is being used to consolidate Chinese state authority in Tibet (Shepherd 2006), it has also triggered widespread pop- ular protest in semi-autonomous Hong Kong. State-directed Chinese tourism is now increasingly precipitating international protest over the territorially contested South China Sea. I. The Expo is a landmark event in the ambitious development of the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) , a project of national and regional importance. The rapid development of the offshore duty-free sector in Hainan province since 2011 has played a key role in Hainan’s growing allure and status as an international tourism consumption centre. By the end of 2020, the offshore duty-free business was worth approximately USD5 billion, boosted by the introduction of an enhanced shopping policy in July 2020, which gave tremendous impetus to brands in the channel as other duty-free markets fell into a deep pandemic-driven slump. The story of Hainan FTP’s offshore duty-free industry represents a triumph of policy, a pro-business, pro-consumer approach that is core to President Xi Jinping’s vision of ‘dual circulation’ and of maximising domestic consumption – in this case by repatriating overseas travel shopping to China.

    March 1st, 2018, Paris SUEZ NWS TEAMS UP WITH CNOOC TO RISE THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES OF THE OIL & GAS SECTOR SUEZ NWS, a subsidiary of SUEZ Group, signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with CNOOC Energy Technology1, to enlarge their long-term cooperation and further pursue environmental projects in the Oil & Gas sector. The agreement builds on an existing partnership in the project of Dongfang Chemical Wastewater Treatment Plant2 and will enable environmental services to CNOOC’s petrochemical assets and oilfield development projects both within China and abroad. It builds a comprehensive partnership on water, wastewater, sludge, hazardous waste and gas management solution for oil and gas production, which will cover engineering and construction, upgrade and retrofit, project operation and management and equipment manufacturing. The cooperation started in July 2017 with the establishement of a 50/50 joint venture, SUEZ NWS Environmental (Hainan) Company, to work collectively on the Hainan Dongfang Chemical Wastewater Treatment Plant project. The joint venture will take over the operation and management of its existing wastewater treatment plant in March 2018, which has a daily industrial wastewater capacity of 12,000 m3. It will also be responsible for improving the operational standards and retrofitting the facility as well as further expansion and operation through BOO (Build-Own-Operate) contracts, with a view to making it an iconic environmental management project for CNOOC.
