MR. X CREATES AN ARMENIAN TOWN AND A CAST OF THOUSANDS FOR ATOM EGOYAN'S ARARAT TORONTO, CANADA - September 28, 2001 -- The creative team at Mr. X, Inc., which specializes in digital visual effects for feature films and music videos, are creating digital environments and building cg armies for Ararat, a feature written, produced and directed by Oscar-nominated Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter, Felicia's Journey). The Serendipity Point Films (Toronto, ON) and Alliance Atlantis Motion Picture Company (Toronto, ON) production features a stellar cast including Christopher Plummer, Elias Koteas, Marie-Josee Croze, Eric Bogosian, Bruce Greenwood, Charles Aznavour, Brent Carver, Arsinee Khanjian and David Alpay and is scheduled for mid-2002 release by Miramax Films (Los Angeles, CA). A decade before Hitler rose to power in Germany, 1.5 million Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire were massacred under the regime of the Committee of Union and Progress, more widely known as "The Young Turks." Indeed, the lack of attention given to the Armenian slaughter has been attributed to bolstering Hitler's confidence. The Armenian Genocide of 1915 - 1923 serves as the basis for Egoyan's film. A film-within- a-film, Ararat tells the story of the production of an historical epic about the atrocities and how they change the life of one member of the crew. For the films' numerous flashback sequences Mr. X is recreating the Armenian city of Van, circa 1914, prior to the carnage that took place there. Wilby Wonderful
Wilby Wonderful A film by Daniel MacIvor Running Time: 99 min. Distributor Contact: Josh Levin Film Movement Series 109 W. 27th St., Suite 9B, New York, NY 10001 Tel: 212-941-7744 ext. 213 Fax: 212-941-7812 [email protected] SYNOPSIS Wilby Wonderful is a bittersweet comedy about the difference a day makes. Over the course of twenty-four hours, the residents of the tiny island town of Wilby try to maintain business as a sex scandal threatens to rock the town to its core. The town’s video store owner, Dan Jarvis (James Allodi) – depressed over the pending revelations about his love life – decides to end it all, but keeps getting interrupted by Duck MacDonald (Callum Keith Rennie), the town’s dyslexic sign-painter, during his half-hearted suicide attempts. Meanwhile, Dan has enlisted blindly ambitious real estate agent Carol French (Sandra Oh) to sell his house in an effort to quickly tie up the last of his loose ends. Carol, however, is more interested in selling her recently deceased mother-in-law’s house to Mayor Brent Fisher (Maury Chaykin), in order to get in with the in-crowd. To take her social step up, Carol could use the help of her police officer husband Buddy (Paul Gross), but Buddy has his hands full with sexy, wrong-side-of-the-tracks Sandra Anderson (Rebecca Jenkins), who can never decide if she is coming or going. Sandra’s daughter Emily (Ellen Page), is none too thrilled about her mother repeating her typical pattern of married men and bad reputation, but Emily herself is just about to have her heart broken for the very first time. -

04_100547 ch01.qxp 3/14/07 8:00 PM Page 1 1 The Savannah Experience If you have time to visit only one city in the Southeast, make it Savannah. It’s that special. The movie Forrest Gump may have put the city squarely on the tourist map, but nothing changed the face of Savannah more than the 1994 publication of John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The impact has been unprecedented, bringing in millions in revenue as thousands flock to see the sights from the bestseller and the 1997 movie directed by Clint Eastwood. In fact, Savannah tourism has nearly doubled since publication of what’s known locally as The Book. Even after all this time, some locals still earn their living off The Book’s fallout, hawking postcards, walking tours, T-shirts, and in some cases their own careers, as in the case of the Lady Chablis, the drag queen in The Book who played herself in the film. “What’s special about Savannah?” we asked an old-timer. “Why, here we even have water fountains for dogs,” he said. The free spirit, the passion, and even the decadence of Savannah resemble those of Key West or New Orleans rather than the Bible Belt down-home “Red State” interior of Georgia. In that sense, it’s as different from the rest of the state as New York City is from upstate New York. Savannah—pronounce it with a drawl—conjures up all the clichéd images of the Deep South: live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, stately antebellum mansions, mint juleps sipped on the veranda, magnolia trees, peaceful marshes, horse-drawn carriages, ships sailing up the river (though no longer laden with cotton), and evenCOPYRIGHTED General Sherman, no one’s favorite MATERIAL military hero here. -

Canadian Humour
Canadian humour Canadian humour is an integral part of the Canadian Identity. There are several traditions in Canadian humour in both English and French. While these traditions are distinct and at times very different, there are common themes that relate to Canadians' shared history and geopolitical situation in North America and the world. Various trends can be noted in Canadian comedy. One thread is the portrayal of a "typical" Canadian family in an on-going radio or television series. Examples include La famille Plouffe, with its mix of drama, humour, politics and religion and sitcoms such as King of Kensington and La Petite Vie. Another major thread tends to be political and cultural satire: television shows such as CODCO, Royal Canadian Air Farce, La Fin du monde est à 7 heures and This Hour Has 22 Minutes, monologuists such as Yvon Deschamps and Rick Mercer and writers, including Michel Tremblay, Will Ferguson and Eric Nicol draw their inspiration from Canadian and Québécois society and politics. Another trend revels in absurdity, demonstrated by television series like The Kids in the Hall and The Frantics, and musician-comedians such as The Arrogant Worms, Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie and Bowser and Blue. Satire is arguably the primary characteristic of Canadian humour, evident in each of these threads, and uniting various genres and regional cultural differences. Humber College in Toronto and the École nationale de l'humour in Montreal offer post-secondary programmes in comedy writing and performance. Montreal is also home to the bilingual (English and French) Just For Laughs festival and to the Just for Laughs museum, a bilingual, international museum of comedy. -
