The university has kept manifesting its legacy of national movements whenever nation faced crisis. Since its establishment, Jamia marches ahead to attain its mission through a goal of blending contemporary knowledge with skills and values in true spirit to groom high caliber thinkers; morally upright and physically sound citizenry inspired with proactive approach to take up challenges confronting the present society and prove productive individuals in ever changing knowledge society with a factor of care. JMI has become an ensemble of a multilayered educational system which covers all aspects of schooling, under-graduate, post-graduate, Ph.D. and post-doctoral education. With 9 faculties of learning, 39 teaching and research departments, over 30 centres of learning and research, 190 courses, approximately 800 faculty members and more than 20000 students we attract brightest young minds from all over the country. They use creative space of JMI to actualize their potential. JMI today holds the torch of illumination giving shape to ideas and fostering innovation. Living up to the promises of the founding fathers, we strive to realize our vision “to create a human universe that offers inclusiveness, equity, fellowship, justice and peace for one and all”. During prevailing Pandemic Covid-19 situation, JMI could be able to establish Online Automation system for students related affairs. This resulted in the regular engagement of teachers and students through online mode of teaching and learning process. The staff of the Office of the Controller of Examinations also worked hard for timely conduct of examinations and declaration of the results which made our students eligible for getting job opportunities at National and International level. Apart from this, the interested students got their admission in higher studies in the reputed National/ International Institutions. JMI in its 100th year has been ranked as best Indian Central University by the Ministry of Education in the list of 40 central universities. JMI is placed at 10th in the universities category Ranking of NIRF. I would like to congratulate Deans of Faculties, Directors of the Centers, Head of Departments, Faculty members, all stake-holders of JMI, the members of prospectus committee, on their successful preparation and launch of the Prospectus for the academic session 2021-22. I wish that Jamia Millia Islamia is able to attract promising students from every nook and corner of India and abroad and offer them even better facilities. May JMI prove to be a platform for the young talent to show their mettle and excel in every sphere of life and their firm faith inself-reliance, determination and integrity. 4 Prospectus 2021-22 http://jmi.ac.in ABOUT JAMIA MILLIA ISLAMIA 1. Establishment Jamia Millia Islamia, a Public Central University established in 1920, originally at Aligarh in United Provinces. It was initially moved to Karol Bagh in 1925, Delhi and later built up in Jamia Nagar. In 1988, it became Central University by an Act of Parliament, since then expanding in different directions achieving the new dimensions. The University is the result of the tireless efforts of its founders, such as Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmud Hasan, Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, Abdul Majeed Khwaja and Dr. Zakir Husain. It symbolizes the unflinching and resolute commitment of these great visionaries in bringing about socio-economic transformation of common masses in general and Muslims in particular through the vehicle of education. The distinct identity of Jamia Millia Islamia has been eloquently explicated by Dr. Zakir Husain. Jamia Millia Islamia is basically originated as the movement of a struggle for education and cultural renaissance against the colonial regime and evolves a national culture for common Indian. It‘s foundation is to promote patriotism and national integration among Indians, who will be proud to take part in the future progress of India, which will play its part in the comity of nations for peace and development and to prepare the children of masses in general and Muslims in particular to be the masters of the future in different subjects/disciplines of their choice. The mission of the founding fathers of this great institution should not only serve as a beacon light for all the stakeholders, but should also inspire all in making this university as one of the premier institutions of higher learning in the world. It should attain distinction in providing cutting edge learning experience, internationally benchmarked education, intellectual freedom and critical research opportunities in frontier areas of contemporary concern. Today, Jamia Millia Islamia is an “A” grade Central University accredited by NAAC and is an ensemble of a multi layered educational system which covers all aspects of schooling, under- graduate and post-graduate education. We are in process of 2nd cycle assessment of NAAC. The university recognizes that teaching and research are complementary activities that can advance its long-term interest. It has Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Education, Humanities & Languages, Architecture & Ekistics, Fine Arts, Law and Dentistry Faculties. Also, it has a well-known AJK Mass Communication Research Centre. Jamia has over thirty research centres that have given it an edge in terms of critical research in various areas. In fact, there had been different schools of thought who supported the Movement and their works and achievements cannot be forgotten. Historically, Ulema played a key role in the politics of subcontinent and the contribution of Dar ul Uloom Deoband, Mazahir-ul- Uloom (Saharanpur), Madrassa Qasim-ul-Uloom( Muradabad), famous madaris of Deobandi faction is a settled fact. Their role became both effective and emphatic with the passage of time when they sided with the All India Muslim League. Their role and services in this historic episode is the focus of the study in hand. Keywords: Deoband, Aligarh Movement, Khilafat, Muslim League, Congress Ulama in Politics: Retrospect: Besides performing their religious obligations, the religious ulema also took part in the War of Freedom 1857, similar to the other Indians, and it was only due to their active participation that the movement became in line and determined. These ulema used the pen and sword to fight against the British and it is also a fact that ordinary causes of 1857 War were blazed by these ulema. Mian Muhammad Shafi writes: Who says that the fire lit by Sayyid Ahmad was extinguished or it had cooled down? These were the people who encouraged Muslims and the Hindus to fight against the British in 1857.

Mani Bhavan was the nerve centre in the city of Bombay (now Mumbai) for Gandhiji’s activities and movements. It was from here that Gandhiji launched the first nationwide satyagraha of Rowlett Act, started Khilafat and Non-operation movements. Today it stands as a memorial to Gandhiji’s life and teachings. _______ The most distinguished address in a quiet locality of Gamdevi in Mumbai is the historic building, Mani Bhavan - the house where Gandhiji stayed whenever he was in Mumbai from 1917 to 1934. Mani Bhavan belonged to Gandhiji’s friend Revashankar Jhaveri who was a jeweller by profession and elder brother of Dr Pranjivandas Mehta - Gandhiji’s friend from his student days in England. Gandhiji and Revashankarbhai shared the ideology of non-violence, truth and satyagraha and this was the bond of their empathetic friendship. It will defend one particular prism for such an endeavour, that of the history of political emotions present in the books written by major politicians and intellectuals in late colonial India. Such means of access, we think, should explore both Urdu and English emotional components of the Aqeel Collection writings by using the latest research in the domain called ‘history of emotions.’ The article will provide some modest ideas on why and how the emotional intends to open up new ways of understanding the way politicians at that time approached and debated the future of British India into two independent nations, India and Pakistan. The article partly shows why emotional life shaped political action at the time, and how political emotions were, in turn, able to guide and strengthen the construction of post-imperialist, nationalist or supremacist ideologies that still persist today.
