Article The Korean Wave in the Middle East: Past and Present Mohamed Elaskary Department of Arabic Interpretation, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul 17035, South Korea; [email protected]; Tel. +821054312809 Received: 01 October 2018; Accepted: 22 October 2018; Published: 25 October 2018 Abstract: The Korean Wave—otherwise known as Hallyu or Neo-Hallyu—has a particularly strong influence on the Middle East but scholarly attention has not reflected this occurrence. In this article I provide a brief history of Hallyu, noting its mix of cultural and economic characteristics, and then analyse the reception of the phenomenon in the Arab Middle East by considering fan activity on social media platforms. I then conclude by discussing the cultural, political and economic benefits of Hallyu to Korea and indeed the wider world. For the sake of convenience, I will be using the term Hallyu (or Neo-Hallyu) rather than the Korean Wave throughout my paper. Introduction My first encounter with Korean culture was in 2010 when I was invited to present a paper at a conference on the Korean Wave that was held in Seoul in October 2010. In that presentation, I highlighted that Korean drama had been well received in the Arab world because most Korean drama themes (social, historical and familial) appeal to Arab viewers. In addition, the lack of nudity in these dramas as opposed to that of Western dramas made them more appealing to Arab viewers. The number of research papers and books focused on Hallyu at that time was minimal. -

Journal of Popular Music Education Special issue on Hip-hop Hip-Hop Pedagogy as Production Practice: Reverse-Engineering the Sample-Based Aesthetic Mike Exarchos (a.k.a. Stereo Mike) | London College of Music (University of West London) Introduction Hip-hop1 production practice contains a rich matrix of creative methods within its paradigm, which have the potential to inform and inspire music production pedagogy in higher education. The techno-artistic trajectory of rap production consists of numerous phases that may involve live performance, recording, sampling, synthesis, programming, mixing and mastering. Furthermore, it is not rare for self-contained processes—such as interpolation2 and the creation of content for sampling—to be actualized as developmental phases within the larger production trajectory. The well-documented issues affecting phonographic sampling have given rise to alternative practices, inviting live instrumental musicianship within hip-hop music-making, but also a dependence on synthesized sonics (often as signifiers of geographical and stylistic divergence). As a consequence, contemporary hip-hop production—arguably more than any other commercial music-making form—can provide a dynamic, applied context for the exploration, implementation, interplay and interaction of most phonographic stages conceived of and practiced within popular music production. This is not to say that other musics do not deploy multiple methods within their production processes, or that Hip-Hop exemplifies a sole case of multi-layered—or bricolage—production. After all, many popular musics have borrowed from hip-hop practices, and the rap production paradigm can be traced outside of strict stylistic barriers 1 The terms ‘Hip-Hop’ and ‘Rap’ will be used interchangeably throughout the paper, referring to the musical genre, outputs and practices associated with hip-hop culture and art. -

He's had his distinctive, oddly placed, brightly colored tape installations ripped off by everybody from other street artists to Vampire Weekend. And he's got a new, Jeff Koons-pranking solo show up this Thursday at Dumbo gallery Bose Pacia, entitled Overlap. Das Racist, of course, are playing the afterparty at 17 Frost. In advance of Nihalani's solo debut at the gallery, we chatted a bit about the upcoming show and his brushes with various local musicians, both friendly and otherwise. When last we spoke, I think, it was about whether you'd done the art for Vampire Weekend's "Cousins" video. You hadn't, but you did point me to someone who said "Vampire Weekend totally ripped him off (poorly) without consent or compensation." Did they ever reach out to make it right? Is that video still a sore spot? Nah, they never reached out. I wouldn't be so bummed if they didn't do such a poor imitation. But I kinda can't blame the band as much as the director who 'came up' with the idea for the video. Come to think of it, your aesthetic seems like it's particularly prone to other people borrowing it--is that a source of pain for you? Want to name any other names of people who've ripped you off while we're here? Sometimes it gets weird to see my style copied, but I think it's a benefit to have my stuff be so relatable. -

He moved from British independent movies, like the suicide bomber comedy, Four Lions, to a big supporting part in Jack Gyllenhaal’s Nightcrawler, to full-fledged leading man roles. And also, like I said, he is an MC and he’s very good at it. When I talked with him in 2016, he’d just released a new EP in collaboration with Heems, of Das Racist. They have played in front of thousands of fans at important festivals and have performed on some of the world’s most prominent stages. These two DJs who produce, write and make music utilizing creative and high-energy beats with sharp melodic centerpieces, have been colleagues and friends for years. They’ve always known that someday they would work together on a project of a bigger scale. Then one night the musical yarn inside Toy’s head—and laptop—began to spin. Known for his pioneering work as a maestro of the hip hop en español movement, Toy has been traveling the world for the last 15 years DJing, producing and pioneering the New Cumbia and Global Bass phenomena. Toy sent Camilo a series of intricate beats he was saving for something special. Upon hearing the thumps and the bumps of those fast-moving and hypnotic rhythms, Camilo called Toy to say he was ready to begin work. In that moment, a new album concept was born out of their friendship and commitment to uniting the masses through music. They called it COMPASS, a name that refers to both the magnetized instrument and a shortened word for compadres or godfathers, and it would take two years of their lives in between gigs, tours and other projects to come to fruition.
