John Murry Bio It's Not Easy to Hold an Unclouded Mirror up to the World John Murry Bio It’s not easy to hold an unclouded mirror up to the world. The temptation to fog up truths or angle them in ways that are less painful is nigh irresistible. To look at things as they are - warts and all, good and bad - requires a brave heart and sturdy constitution. To then stir that honest stuff into songs that communicate successfully to others is rarer still. This is what Oakland, CA-based singer-songwriter John Murry does with clear-eyed, unsentimental efficiency. Cut from the same cloth as Elliott Smith, Lou Reed, Jeff Tweedy and Darkness On The Edge of Town-era Springsteen, Murry faces what he sees in the glass unflinchingly and then turns the mirror on us in ways that allow one to see their own reflection in sharper focus. The Tupelo, Mississippi native brings some of the literary heft of his second cousin, William Faulkner, to the table but there’s no mistaking that he’s up to rock & roll business, his sound howling with electricity, distortion, and ornery, primal growl, the rabblerousing spirit of the MC5 and Patti Smith breathing anew through Murry. The combination of emotionally unsparing, high-minded thinking, streetwise poetry, and gutbucket execution garnered Murry’s latest full-length album, The Graceless Age, top critical honors around the world including Uncut (“the kind of album that answers questions you didn't realize you were asking”), a 5-star review from MOJO (“formidable stuff”), raves from American Songwriter (“an album that doesn’t hide its ambitions to be great”), Q Magazine (“intensely beautiful”), and Dirty Impound (“allowed full sway The Graceless Age will leave one more tender and aware of the perverse duality of love, so fragile in some ways but also a force that draws us out of darkness and into the rough business of living.”). Murry’s new EP, Califorlornia (arriving June 13, 2014), continues his evolution, showing off more modern rock curves and building on the buzzing, very alive production direction he embarked on with the late Tim Mooney (American Music Club) on The Graceless Age. The EP features two songs co-written with longtime fellow traveler Chuck Prophet (Green On Red), a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Genius,” and a tribute to Mooney called “Timmy”. For all his jagged edges and shadowy speculation, Murry is at his core a lover and a most dedicated one to boot. For all the muck he’s encountered spelunking the human condition, he’s still intensely aware that for all the endless battles and casual disregard we’re capable of there is nothing as healing, bonding, or just plain humanizing as real love. It’s what remains when everything else is washed away, something Murry understands in palpable ways after wandering for years in drugs and darkness, a man who understands the gift of second chances and true contrition. Sure, there’s not enough love in the world and there’s myriad places to stumble in our efforts to care for others in the right ways but Murry makes these questions pertinent and sparks one to examine the quality of their loving and where their failings sabotage their walk towards the light. “When talking to my daughter, I don't present the world as anything other than what it is. She asks more questions than I have answers for. But she has her own need to see it as potentially a better place than it is, and I see that in other kids – there's a need for them to believe that they could change things, that things could be happier,” says Murry. “I think I probably come across a bit dark, but I think that's just because I'm angry." However, it’s a righteous sort of anger that burns inside Murry, a steady fire that draws folks near, warms them, and perhaps even singes their fingers in wakening ways. -Written by Dennis Cook .

In the fair city of Detroit, nestled among the garage- rock nooks and country crannies, lurks the music of Blanche. Husband and wife Dan and Tracee Miller trade intense and haunting vocals over an uneasy sea of pedal steel, banjo, raw guitar sounds, and sparse, driving drumming. The moods created in the songs seem to define Blanche. Some songs are sad and pretty, while others have a powerful, spooky feel. The melodies trick you into singing along with tales of superstitions, garbage picking, fading trust, and feelings of lost hope. The sound combines the intense desperation of the Gun Club, the sincere sadness of the Carter Family, and the creepy playfulness of Lee Hazlewood Intro taken from the biography on the Blanche website which is well worth a visit and a wonderful design. www.blanchemusic.com INTERVIEW BY STEVE RAPID | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RONNIE NORTON Tell us what the secret of Little Amber Bottles is? By far the most pervasive and long-lived was the revival of psychedelia, that kept recurring throughout the Eighties and the Nineties. Los Angeles had its own movement, the "Paisley Underground". Psychedelia became merely a pretext to concoct baroque, oneiric and hypnotic sounds, often with the help of keyboards and strings. Byrds-ian jangling guitars and naive melodies a` la Hollies dominate Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (feb/mar - oct 1983) by Rain Parade (1), with Matt Piucci on vocals and Dave Roback on guitar, as well as the EP Baroque Hoedown (fall 1982 - dec 1982) and the album Sixteen Tambourines (? 1983 - oct 1983) by Mike Quercio's Three O'Clock (1). Needless to say, the Paisley Underground was only the tip of the iceberg. The Dream Syndicate (12), formed by guitarists Steve Wynn and Karl Precoda and bassist Kendra Smith, acted as the natural liaison between Television (and the new wave in general) and the new generation of psychedelic rockers.

The Slummers Love Of The Amateur Blue Rose Records Dan Stuart ! Or the wondrous musical resurrection of a formerly influential desert rock band leader, after years of withdrawl into an early retirement. The founder and bandleader of Green On Red decided in the mid 90s to never have anything to do with the Rock’n Roll business again, moved from Tucson, Arizona to Madrid the exile of personal choice……and after all has been back for the past few years with not just one but several brilliant projects: first a short but all the more impressing reunion with the mentioned Green on Red (incl. Chuck Prophet), then the a lot more elaborate reactivation of Danny & Dusty , another very successful cult band of the 80s with Steve Wynn, and now THE SLUMMERS , his newest baby making the first statement with the debut record Love Of The Amateur ! The Slummers certainly doesn’t consist of just Dan Stuart, but matured in the about one year start-up phase into a real band, where one pinion fits perfectly into the other, where the single musicians complement each other with their abilities and add the peculiarities of their different cultural backgrounds. The Slummers are an intercontinental American/Italian entity with exactly defined and shared tasks. Stuart and his sideman for many years, the in No Depression/Alt.County/Guitar Rock circles well known producer and multi-instrumental JD Foster , are responsible for songwriting, guitars, and vocals, the two Italians Diego Sapignoli on drums and Antonio Gramentieri , composer, arrangeur, producer and multiinstrumentalist, are the backbone of the band.

JUKEBOX AWARDS 2014 OBJECT LESSONS As I returned home from shopping one morning, I noted a sign posted on a streetlamp. It announced an estate sale. Ordinarily I demur from any opportunity to add one more item to my inventory of possessions. Nonetheless, the location of the event was on my street and only six addresses down. I made my approach and slowly realized it was a two flat I had privately dubbed “the house with the Nazi gate,” due to its wrought iron entry containing a design element, which incorporated the swastika. (Though the quasi-Greek cross design preceded the twentieth century scourge of Nazism, the roots of the ideogram in South and East Asia which became a representation of the inexorable wheel of history vanish into the past.) I opened that gate and entered. Inside I found a handful of people puttering amidst the belongings of a man who I had often seen on the front porch, engaged in the act of combing his dog’s fur. Snatches of overheard conversation revealed that the man had died and the proceeds from the sale of his home and belongings would be donated to an unnamed church. I pawed through a handful of books and found nothing of interest. A selection of records provided no discernible unifying theme, genre or focus. Spotting a reggae 45-RPM single, I had the sudden insight that much of what I was seeing appeared to be souvenirs: a record from Jamaica, a wood carving of Lao-Tse from Taiwan, a dish from here and a figurine from there.
