Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners ALABAMA STATE BOARD OF MEDICAL EXAMINERS P.O. BOX 946 TELEPHONE: (334) 242-4116 MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA 36101-0946 FAX: (334) 242-4155 848 WASHINGTON AVE. E MAIL: [email protected] MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA 36104 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, April 17, 2019 Statement from the Executive Director of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners MONTGOMERY - "The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners supports today's efforts by the U.S. Attorney's Office to combat the drug abuse epidemic,” said Sarah H. Moore, executive director of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners. “While recognizing there is more work to be done, physicians in Alabama have made tremendous progress in reducing opioid abuse, misuse, and diversion by decreasing the total amount opioids prescribed by 11% from 2016 to 2017, and by a total of 23.3% from 2013 to 2017. This is the largest reduction in opioid prescriptions among southeastern states over that 5-year period, and the Board will continue to support law enforcement to capitalize on these gains.” For patients whose medical care may have been or may be disrupted by today's events, the Board has placed a list of licensed physicians in the areas impacted on its website, www.albme.org, and has provided the list to the Alabama Department of Mental Health. FAQs for Affected Patients My doctor has just been arrested. Where do I get medical care? Your doctor still has an obligation to provide for your care. If your doctor can no longer practice medicine, your doctor has an obligation to help you obtain care elsewhere. Patients who have a primary care physician should contact him/her as soon as possible to alert him/her that they will need help continuing any treatment regimens being prescribed by the arrested physician. A primary care physician should be able to continue most regimens, including controlled substance regimens, until an appropriate referral can be made. Patients who believe they are experiencing withdrawal symptoms should seek care from an emergency room. My physician has been arrested. How can I get my medical records? You have a right to your medical records. Your physician should arrange to provide them to you or transfer them to the new physician of your choice. He or she may provide these at no cost or may charge a small processing fee. Your physician’s duty to you continues even after he or she has been arrested. If your physician will not transfer your medical records, please contact the Board of Medical Examiners at 334-242-4116. Other information: Patients who are seeking help for opioid addiction can call 1-866-264-4073. Information about substance abuse and opioids is available at the following websites: http://www.alabamapublichealth.gov/pharmacy/opioid-and-heroin.html https://mh.alabama.gov/understanding-the-opioid-crisis/ ALABAMA STATE BOARD OF MEDICAL EXAMINERS P.O.
