From Radio Insight Hackers attack stations. More details regarding the hijacking of the multiple stations’ audio have come to light. Furcast wrote a long accord of what happened on their end after they were tipped off to their content being heard on the stations. The hacker apparently used the Shodan device search engine to build a database of unsecured Barix devices which then broke into as many of the devices as possible and connected them to Furcast’s stream. When Furcast was made aware they cut off the stream and moved it to a new URL to prevent further access. ArsTechina also has a feature up on the event. The Association of Broadcasters published a report on how to further secure a Barix box including using a 24‐character password and hide the web access to the box underneath a firewall. 6 Original Report 4/6: Some listeners of Always Mountain Time Hot AC “Lift FM” 106.3 KIFT Kremmling CO and other stations across the country got a surprise on Tuesday morning when the stations began airing the audio of an explicit podcast about furry sex. KIFT was not the only station to be affected. 104.3 KXAX‐LP Livingston TX, an AM in Denver and a national syndicator that wished to not be identified were also affected by what seems like a directed botnet attack seeking access to as many public facing Barix while then locking out the stations. Engineers at the stations needed to do a hard reset of the devices to regain control.

STATION NEWS 1550 WZUM PA Braddock – 4/2 1200 – On their final day of Urban Contemporary with closing announcements by one of the two owners and voiceovers by NRCer Clarke Ingram then switching at 1200 to all jazz by a new group Pittsburgh Media hoping soon to have a simulcast FM at 101.1. CBK is heard regular here in Cedar Creek, Texas at different times of the year. (JN‐TX) 560 KBLU AZ Yuma – 3/26 1100 – Poor with ID “Newstalk 560 KBLU Yuma” into news. Stronger at 1134 with another ID. KFYI 550 IBOC was off leaving it possible to DX on 560. (NJ‐AZ) 650 CKOM SK Saskatoon – 3/6 0604 – First thing I caught was an man ending his announcement with ʺ...on NewsTalk 650, CKOM,ʺ another short promo followed then ended with the same ID, next was a promo for the program The Green Zone ʺon NewsTalk 980 CJME, and 650 CKOM.ʺ All of this was heard through a quiet music segment (Coast‐To‐Coast) on KGAB. (RV‐TX) 660 KTNN AZ Window Rock – 3/23 0957 – Navajo and English announcements and ads; legal ID at 0959:55 ʺKTNN Window Rock ‐ Tohatchi ‐ Teec Nos Pos;ʺ and into news from an unID network; Navajo drumming followed at 1003. Good/very good with local KLTT‐670 (and its IBOC) briefly off. (JW‐CO) 660 KSKY TX Balch Springs – 3/6 0808 – In the Hugh Hewitt Show. BOH slogan ID announcement ʺ660‐AM, The Answer,ʺ followed by program promo and local/national ads, then another slogan ID ʺDallas and Fort Worthʹs home for stimulating talk, AM‐660, The Answer,ʺ then back to Hugh Hewitt Show. (RV‐ TX) 670 KBOI ID Boise – 3/23 0807 – Weather, sports, ads; traffic and weather together at 0812. Fair signal; local KLTT was off the air. (JW‐CO) 680 KKYX TX San Antonio – 3/18 0936 – “Country Legends, KKYX, now in stereo on 104‐9.” Does “now” imply a recent addition? No, as of last August it’s already in the NRC AM Log as // K285EU, 104.9, but it also shows stereo (and IBOC) on 680. If so, why does KKYX San Antonio TX imply it’s not stereo on original AM frequency? Did they turn that off once they had the translator? BTW coverage of a 250‐watt max FM translator is incomparable to a 50/10 kW low band AM station. As for IBOC, I have not noticed any noise from it peaking at 667/693. (GH‐OK) 710 WAQI FL Miami – 3/27 2149 – Poor; ʺen Miamiʺ few times, LID. In next morning too. Atop. (JJR‐WI) 800 CHAB SK Moose Jaw – 3/28 0849 – Weather, pothole hotline, ʺHeritage Moose Jaw Minuteʺ at 0850. Good on peaks, but 5 minutes later XEROK was on top. (JW‐ CO) 14 810 KSWV NM Santa Fe – 4/1 0831 – Popped on at 0831 with ʺRadio Que Suave desde Santa Fe AM 810;ʺ two Latino songs were followed by another non‐ID: ʺBroadcasting from the City of Holy Faith AM 810ʺ. Fair on peaks, thanks to local KLVZ being silent. (JW‐CO) 810 KBHB SD Sturgis – 4/1 0846 – Ad for upcoming Angus bull sale, and other farm/ranch news; weather forecast; man with legal ID at 0900: ʺ...this is the Voice of the Ranch, the Big 81 KBHB Sturgis ‐ Rapid City;ʺ ABC news followed. Fair/good with local KLVZ off the air. (JW‐CO) 880 WIJR IL Highland – 3/18 2226 – Songs in Spanish dominate, ENE/WSW, and not much from KRVN even when aiming N. This is on DSB, but later I need to listen on LSB only, to avoid KHAC NM/AZ QRM which is on USB only. Soon hear non‐ IDs inserted between songs, as “La Tremenda 8‐80 … La Raza.” (GH‐OK) 900 CKBI AB Prince Albert – 3/28 0744 – Weather, ads, C&W music on ʺTodayʹs Country.ʺ Fair with local KPOF‐910 IBOC mercifully shut off. (JW‐CO) 920 KKLS SD Rapid City – 3/26 0958 – Radar Weather, then ʺStay tuned for more of Rapid Cityʹs Smash Hits;ʺ a block of ads was followed by Oldies music. Generally fair with local KPOF‐910 IBOC turned off. (JW‐CO) 920 KXLY WA Spokane – 3/28 0758 – News, weather, ads, etc.; several IDʹs as ʺFM News Radio 100.3 KXLY 920;ʺ legal ID at ToH and into ABC news. Signal up and down. (JW‐ CO) 960 KOVO UT Provo – 3/27 0655 – ESPN programming, ʺESPN‐960, KOVO, Provoʺ TOH ID then backs into sports. (RV‐TX) 960 CFAC AB Calgary – 3/27 0754 – Surprised to hear this on my west EWE with many “Sports net 960 The Fan” IDs on top of the channel with fair to good signal with KGKL underneath weak. Last time I heard this was on Jan 25, 1987 from Central Queensland, ! (JN‐TX) 980 KFWB CA Los Angeles – 3/27 0648 – In and out with Bollywood music and frequent ID announcements by woman for ʺDesi 9‐80 AMʺ, TOH ID announcement by woman ʺYouʹre listening to Desi 980 AM, KFWB, Los Angeles‐San Diego, Bollywood...,ʺ then back into music. (RV‐TX) 1030 KCWJ MO Blue Springs – 3/20 0912 – “Real Country” non‐ID and into “ Saturday Night” from NE/SW. Confirming recent NRC report that they have flipped to C&W by this slogan, ex‐religious/gospel. (GH‐OK) 1030 KCTA TX Corpus Christi – 3/24 2121 – Gospel from N/S, not nice: “may the Lord curse and abandon you,” heavy SAH of 3.7 Hz with algo. 2129 ads for Mirador in Corpus Christi, and mergegospel.com; 2131:30 goes silent, or rather to the open carrier/dead air plus hum surges up as I have been hearing for the last three nights hours afterwards, as this 50 kW daytimer fails to turn off transmitter at sunset! Nor did they ID or say good‐night, or anything. (GH‐OK) 1070 KWEL TX Midland – 3/18 0907 – Call letter ID with mentions of 1070 AM, 107.1 FM, and kwel.com; area weather was next. Poor, mixing with KFTI in the null of KNX. (JW‐CO) 1150 WEAQ WI Chippewa Falls – 3/29 0750 – Poor‐in fade up /WHBY. 2 Eau Claire ads, Oldies. (JJR‐WI) 1170 KYET AZ Golden Valley – 4/2 2201 – Man with legal ID: ʺYour only locally owned and operated classic country radio KYET Golden Valleyʺ and back to music. Fair/poor with pest KFAQ off the air. (JW‐CO) 1170 KOWZ MN Waseca – 4/2 2232 – Oldies music; canned ʺAM 1170ʺ non‐IDʹs between songs; ads with 507 area code; no call letters heard. Fair/poor with KFAQ off the air. (JW‐CO) 1190 KQQZ MO De Soto – 3/19 2150 – KQQZ announcing that dead air is normally a no‐no (really? witness my many logs of it from incompetent stations on MW and SW), but on this nonconformist station, a minute of silence is about to follow “in memory of our loved ones” (not clear if those were more clearly defined). “If you tune to another station, don’t come back, because we don’t want you as a listener.” Well, it’s not totally dead, but a chime every 10 seconds from 2151:30 to 2152:3‐. This is one of the Insane Broadcasting Company cluster almost owned by Bob Romanik ʺThe Grim Reaper of Radio,ʺ “The Craziest Son of a Bitch youʹll ever hear on the radio” to quote his own website, http://www.kqqz1190am.com/GrimReaper.html Obviously on 10 kW day power rather than 22 watts night. (GH‐OK) 15 1240 KDSK NM Los Ranchos de Albuquerque – 3/11 0654 – 60ʹs oldies into TOH IDʺ...you are listening to AM‐1240, KDSK, Los Ranchos de Albuquerque...ʺ. and back into mx. //‐93.7 FM. (RV‐TX) 1260 KBSZ AZ Apache Junction – 3/18 0950 – Comedy routines, ʺFunny 1260ʺ slogans, spot for Apache Gold Casino; mentions of website funny1260am.com. Occasionally fair but much fading. Local TIS was off the air (but is now back on again). (JW‐CO) 3/27 1100 – Noted with open carrier only. This local has been totally off, or on with open carrier the past two weekends. Weekdays they have been broadcasting regular comedy programming. (NJ‐AZ) 1260 KMZT CA Beverly Hills – 3/28 1004 – Fair with “KMZT Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.” 4/2 1000 – With ID “This is KMZT Beverly Hills, America’s Fine Arts and Classical Music Station..., ” also heard K‐Mozart slogan. (NJ‐AZ) 1260 WSDZ IL Belleville – 3/28 0622 – Poor; traffic on I‐70, I‐44, I‐44‐E “on Friday morningʺ (heard on Monday!) An old traffic report, Yikes! 1260 AM the Answer over WNDE. (JJR‐WI) 1260 KTRC NM Santa Fe – 3/28 0100 – ID: “You’re listening to Santa Fe’s Progressive Talk Station, 1260 KTRC.” Fair over others, local KBSZ OC only. (NJ‐AZ) 1270 KVMI CA Tulare – 3/15 0901 – Out of rock (religious?) music with legal ID at 0901 by female voice: ʺKVMI Tulare, K248BX Visalia ‐ finally, a station made just for you ‐ My 97‐5ʺ and back to music. Last heard as KJUG. (JW‐CO) 1270 WLBR PA Lebanon – 3/31 0732 – Poor; time, ad 717‐832‐XXXX, time check, ʺWLBRʺ 3 times in news. PA #65 1270 #25 NEW! (JJR‐WI) 1280 WBIG IL Aurora – 3/28 2116‐2119 – Poor, over/under lots of UNIDʹs with mention of Network. Rare! Only the second time caught. They run 500 watts at night but have a major lobe in our direction. (JEL‐MO) 1280 KZNS UT Salt Lake City – 3/27 0707 – Heard with NBC Sports Radio //‐97.5 FM ʺThe Zone.ʺ (RV‐TX) 1320 KCTC CA West Sacramento – 3/23 1100 – ID at top of hour, into Mike & Mike ESPN program. Strong over KFNZ. (NJ‐AZ) 1320 WFHR WI Wisconsin Rapids – 3/30 1946 – Poor; calls, ads for 5 mins, calls. No WILS, rare! (JJR‐WI) 1330 KPTY IA Waterloo – 3/17 0752 – Rock music, canned ID as ʺThe Cedar Valleyʹs Party Station 107‐3 The Party;ʺ legal ID at 0802 as ʺ...KPTY Waterloo‐Cedar Falls 107‐ 3 The Partyʺ and back to music. Fair peaks but fighting it out with several others. A needed call change here, ex‐KWLO. (JW‐CO) 1380 KAGE MN Winona – 4/2 2021 – Poor; ʺKay‐Gee Countryʺ in fade up. Not heard in while here. (JJR‐WI) 1380 WDLW OH Lorain – 3/27 0610 – Poor; Lorain County/Elyria food drive. Alone. OH #89, #37 on 1380! NEW! (JJR‐WI 1380 WLRM TN Millington – 3/17 2142 – I’m checking for KRCM, Spanish gospel from TX, but instead hear English ad mentioning area code 901 a couple times. That leads to Memphis TN area, inhabited by WLRM, “Blues Southern Soul and More” per NRC AM Log; but not much to go on, tentative. (GH‐OK) 1380 KRCM TX Shenandoah – 3/21 0859 – New multi‐station legal ID for the Radio Aleluya network; there were about 10 stations mentioned, all FM except for KQUE‐980 and KRCM‐1380; KMIC‐1590 was not on the list, which is strange since just a few days earlier they were the only station being mentioned. Fair/poor signal lately. (JW‐CO) 3/25 2320 – Spanish hymn in ranchera style, loops SSE/NNW; 2321 live DJ outros as “Desde el Cielo Descendió” (he came down from heaven), takes request calls from pious “hermanas” to 713‐589‐1460, ID in passing “Radio Aleluya, buenas noches,” 10:22 time check. Relaying KMIC‐1590; dominant signal and obviously still on 22 kW day power instead of 43 watts night. Like so many gospel stations, they think they are “above the law.” (GH‐OK) 1390 KCRC OK Enid – 3/20 0853 – Local KCRC is open carrier/dead air except for some hum, then interrupted a few times per minute by one syllable or another (from ESPN?) breaking thru the silence; still same past 0902, and at 0907‐0909 totally dead air. This should facilitate DX on adjacent frequencies, but no IDs for something peaking on 1400, and 1380 sounds like the usual KRCM Spanish gospel music from TX. (GH‐OK) 1420 WOC IA Davenport – 3/18 2202 – promo for its Facebook fan community, back to news; 2206 local weather attributed to KWQC TV6, which was originally WOC‐TV, so this is WOC Davenport IA, no longer related? 16 Opening “from the WOC studios, another hour of healthy conversation.” (GH‐ OK) 1430 KWST CA El Centro – 4/3 0900 – In very poor with “KWST El Centro” jingle ID, not much else heard. New logging. (NJ‐AZ) 1450 KNOT AZ Prescott – 3/24 0903 – Good with AM & FM IDs into religious type program. Finally heard an ID for this one after many tries. (NJ‐AZ) 1450 KQTE CA Helendale – 3/24 0923 – Fair with “Stevarino in the Morning on Q‐T Radio 1450” into oldie. New catch. (NJ‐AZ) 1450 KRZY NM Albuquerque – 3/25 0900 – ID “KRZY AM Albuquerque, , ESPN Deportes.” Poor through others on the channel. A surprise new catch. (NJ‐AZ) 1460 WKAM IN Goshen – 4/2 2011 – Poor; La Raza SS music, as (semi local) WJTI ran open carrier through Sunday morning! FM translator 97.9 ok though, hi. (JJR‐WI) 1460 KZUE OK El Reno – 3/30 0858 – Mexican music; legal ID at 0900:50 by heavily‐accented guy: ʺThis is KZUE 1460 AM El Reno, ;ʺ news in Spanish followed; signal disappeared soon afterward. (JW‐CO) 1470 KSMM KS Liberal – 4/4 1000 – Legal ID near ToH: ʺ...KODC Dodge City‐Garden City, KSMM‐AM Liberal 1470,ʺ followed by market report; back to music (Oldies) at 1004. Fair at best. A needed call change here, ex‐KYUU. (JW‐CO) 1470 KDHN TX Dimmit – 3/20 2321 – As I bandscan, promo for “AM 1470 KVHS,” heard twice, and I’m pretty certain of the calls, but nothing listed. So I try Barry McLarnon’s “fuzzy” search site via http://topazdesigns.com/ambc/ and get a hit on KDHN, which is 500/140 watts in the panhandle, directional westward, but close enough phonetically and geographically to be feasible. (GH‐OK) 1480 KBXD TX Dallas – 3/25 0900 – Basic LID at 0900, followed by Oldies, both pop and C&W; old‐style ʺK‐Boxʺ jingles (KBOX was their call back in the 60ʹs). Fair at tune‐in but improved to good by 0915, with no sign of nearby KRAE. (JW‐CO) 1530 KQSC CO Colorado Springs – 3/24 2105 – C&W segués from NW/SE, good signal, presumed KQSC. Now it’s “Mountain Country” // 107.3 FM: http://www.mymountaincountry.com/about‐us. (GH‐OK) 1540 KMPC CA Los Angeles – 3/6 0753 – Korean programming to 0756 then into long station info and ID announcement, followed by US and ROK NAʹs. TOH time pips then EE ID announcement ʺ50,000 watts maximum power, Radio Korea, AM‐1540, KMPC, Los Angeles,ʺ then into more Korean programming. (RV‐TX) 1550 WIGN TN Bristol – 3/29 0708 – Poor; no CBEF. Local ads, phone numbers ??? Ditch‐Witch. (JJR‐WI) 1560 KGOW TX Bellaire – 3/27 0759 – Suddenly up jest before TOH with promos for YSR, TOH ID announcement ʺ...KGOW, Bellaire‐Houston, a Gow Media radio station; Yahoo Sports Radio 1560,ʺ and then back into YSR. (RV‐TX) 1580 KFCS CO Colorado Springs – 3/17 2145 – Gospel from NW/SE dominates, no doubt Colorado Springs under its latest format and call KFCS, and 10 kW day power past 2100 official sunset, instead of 140 watt night power; overcoming my semi‐ local 1580 KOKB Blackwell OK. (GH‐OK) 3/25 0826 – REL program; national ad followed with ID by woman at 0831 ʺThank you for listening to the all‐new AM‐1580, KFCS, Colorado Springs‐Pueblo,ʺ followed by time and temp announcement, and back into another REL program. Call letter change for me. (RV‐TX) 1600 WULM OH Springfield – 3/30 2012 – Poor with Rosary lost to possible KGYM and WAFS. ʺR. Mariaʺ at 2027. Website fit. OH #90, 1600 #37 NEW! (JJR‐WI) 1680 KRJO LA Monroe – 3/18 2159 – Open carrier/dead air, S9+15 atop the CCI, including WPRR, Public Reality Radio, Ada (Grand Rapids) MI, which gives a joint ID for WPJC which is 88.3 in Pontiac IL. The OC/DA loops NW/SE, and can’t be anything but KRJO, especially since its music is missing as first noted March 17 at 0217, so has it been dead all that time, still so at 2304 March 18, some 45 hours later?? Is anyone listening closer to Monroe? Does anyone care since it became a mere appendage to an FM station? 3/19 2144 – Gumbo ad during LSU Sports, so KRJO has come back to life after days(?) of dead air, for something more important than mere music from FM sibling; 2145 singing ad for WCK, foundation repair, and back to . 3/24 2100 – Gumbo ad, and sung ad for WCK Foundation Repair, exactly the same pair I heard 3/19 at 2144‐2146, from KRJO during a base ballgame. 3/25 2325 – LSU Tiger baseball game vs Texas A&M, soon found to be // 1130 KWKH Shreveport with slight echo; and at 2328 same game also on 870 WWL New Orleans, “LSU Sports Radio Network”, but 17 during ad break not //; or when game coverage resumes I find that WWL is running 14 seconds behind the others (so a quick bet could pay off against someone cluelessly listening to the delay). (GH‐OK) 1680 KNTS WA Seattle – 4/2 2247 – Upbeat religious songs, ads, program notes, all in Spanish. Fair signal until 2300, when power was cut, so missed legal ID, if there was one. (JW‐CO) 1690 KDMT CO Arvada – 3/24 2059 – “Denver’s Money Talk 16‐90 AM” non‐IDs twice until signal drops off at 2059.4* without any call letters being heard. 2100 is indeed official FCC sunset time for March. Call changed from KDDZ (Disney) on December 8, 2015. (GH‐OK)

UNID 1150 UNID ‐‐ 3/18 0940 – Classic rock tunes dominate, looping NE/SW, rather than KSAL KS which would be N/S; 0942 ID amid tunes as “All News Radio” – huh? And then a gospel rock song; 0945 fading out but still not much from KSAL. Per KSAL web site they had news at the time, and are branded as News Radio 1150. For the music, possibilities are KHRO El Paso TX; closer KOLJ Quanah TX, supposed to be country classics; or even KRMS Osage Beach MO, news/talk. (GH‐OK) 1700 UNID ‐‐ 3/17 2143 – Classic rock song in English; would assume any station playing music would now be KKLF Richardson TX, but they have been Tejano; diversified? The other TX and IA 1700s are sports or at least talk. (GH‐OK) Why not WRCR? – DY.

Thanks to everyone. See you next time. (JDT‐WA)

Unreported Domestic Stations Three more stations can be struck off the list of station not reported to DDXD since at least Volume 67 (1999‐2000) … one of them, WGLR‐1280, for the sad reason that they are no longer on the air waiting to be logged, but two of them because they were reported this issue: KQTE‐1450 and WSRW‐ 1590. This leaves 445 active stations in the United States and Canada on the unreported list. The most recent full list was printed in Issue 82‐20.

[Connelly‐MA] 1530 SAO TOME E PRINCIPE VOA Pinheira MAR 29 0300 – Yankee Doodle sign‐on; under WCKY. [Connelly‐MA] 1575 Rai Radiouno, Genova MAR 27 0500 – Fair; time marker and check by a woman, fanfare, ʺRai, Radiounoʺ by a man into news in Italian. [Conti‐NH]

PAN‐AMERICAN DX 530 CUBA R.Enciclopedia, La Habana‐Villa María MAR 20 0300 – Talk by woman, James Bond movie instrumental, samba theme, woman, ʺTransmite CMBQ, Radio Enciclopedia, desde la Habana, Cuba.ʺ; loud. [Connelly‐MA] 539.84 NICARAGUA R.Corporación, Managua MAR 19 1115 – Man and woman chatter in studio with constant rooster crowing sound effects, into folk vocal 1118. Exceptionally good signal today. [Krueger‐FL] 580 PUERTO RICO WKAQ San Juan MAR 28 0359 – WKAQ Cinco Ochenta ID; dominant. [Connelly‐MA] 590 CUBA R.Musical Nacional, La Julia MAR 28 0400 – Woman with R.Musical Nacional ID; under WEZE. [Connelly‐MA] 590 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC R.Santa Maria, La Vega MAR 25 0159 – Dominican anthem; mixed with WEZE. Poor with local sunrise and storm noise approaching from the Gulf. [Krueger‐FL] 630 PUERTO RICO WUNO San Juan MAR 25 0300 – NotiUno ID in fast Spanish news/talk; over WPRO. [Connelly‐MA] 660 MEXICO XEDTL México, DF MAR 28 1203 – Mexican national anthem, 1204 woman with ID for R.Ciudadana; KSKY Dallas nulled as much as possible, but México DF is only about 30 degrees further clockwise, as this is the IMER station XEDTL, 50/1 kW (remember when 660 was commercial XERPM?), rather than Aguascalientes, Monterrey or Cd. Delicias which I hear more often. IRCA Mexican Log says XEDTL format is world music, the name meaning female citizen, but then goes into historical talk about the Castillo de Chapultepec and Hernández. Most of México including DF will not go on DST until Sunday April 3, whence the sign‐on should shift to 1100 UTC. [Hauser‐OK] The correct description for the XEDTL format – at least during main hours, when thereʹs not ʺurban popʺ or other music – is ʺcitizen‐producedʺ. Every year IMER puts out a call for proposals for new radio shows for the station. There is a lot of music, but also programming like Mujeres a la tribuna, Enlace ciudadano, and Dimensión educativa. [Raymie Humbert, WTFDA Forum via DXLD] 680 PUERTO RICO WAPA San Juan MAR 25 0200 – Wapa Radio ID; over WRKO. {A} [Connelly‐MA] 700 COLOMBIA HJCX, W Radio, Cali MAR 25 0200 – W Radio IDʹs; good. [Connelly‐MA] 710 MEXICO XEDP Cd. Cuauhtémoc, Chih. APR 1 1218 – The Low‐German preacher is intoning, which we know from long experience is coming via XEDP, 7000/100 watts, guess which? By now, except for 800 XEROK 800, itʹs the only northwest Mexican signal left on lowband. A few minutes later, 650 still bears WSM instead of XETNT. Enid sunrise today 1217 UTC. [Hauser‐OK] 720 MEXICO XEJCC Cd. Juárez, Chih. MAR 20 1200 – National anthem, then ID including new ʺEl Fonografoʺ slogan, and longtime address on Vicente Guerrero Avenue; a brief one‐minute newscast at 1203 was followed by segued romantic vocals, with canned slogans after every couple of songs to 1228, when several PSAʹs were aired. Good peaks, mostly on top of KSAH, also in Spanish. [Wilkins‐CO] 720 NICARAGUA R.Católica, Managua MAR 19 1119 – Inspirational words by female, then male, choral‐orchestral vocal fill, ID, long choir vocal with constantly repeating lyrics, female ID again at 1126. Good. To be avoided and not confused with KSAH Spanish Christian programming when pointing the loop ~45 degrees that way. [Krueger‐FL] 730 CUBA R.Progreso, La Fe MAR 28 0400 – Cuban anthem parallel 640, 650, 690, 720, 750, 900, et al.; over HJCU, others. [Connelly‐MA] 20 739.95 MEXICO XEQN Torreon, Coah. MAR 21 1204 – Area news in progress, with Coahuila datelines; this was entitled ʺFórmula Noticias Torreon;ʺ local and national weather was presented at 1208; phone numbers of 204‐51‐46 and 204‐51‐47 were announced; tourism spot for El Cañon de Rio Lamenta in Chiapas. Generally fair on LSB, separable from the 740 group. [Wilkins‐CO] 780 VENEZUELA YVMN R.Coro, Coro MAR 28 0401 – R.Coro ID and jingle; atop mess. [Connelly‐MA] 800 BONAIRE PJB TransWorld Radio, Kralendijk MAR 25 0200 – Woman, ʺTransmite Radio Transmundial... desde Bonaireʺ; over others. [Connelly‐MA] 800 NICARAGUA Radio 800, Managua MAR 19 1045 – Big signal and alone on channel with Spanish ballads, live male DJ ID 1047, station promo, Managua ads, into rustic folk vocal with accordion, listener phone calls patched in. Parallel live streams at www.ustream.tv/channel/radio‐800‐nicaragua and www.radios.co.ni/800‐am/ and oddly this Spanish domain http://radio800.es/revista/ running nearly parallel time. [Krueger‐FL] 810 BAHAMAS ZNS3 Freeport MAR 22 0935 – Religious program with male preacher. Good signal. [Beu‐TX] MAR 28 0400 – Parallel 1540 with calypso music, talk, ʺItʹs midnight, do you know where your kids are?ʺ; over WGY, others. [Connelly‐MA] 810 COLOMBIA HCJY Bogotá MAR 22 0950 – Spanish news talk with man and woman announcers. Good signal. [Conti‐NH] 910 MEXICO unID MAR 20 1104 – WTWD Plant City partially nulled, with this pointing northeast, nonstop Mexi‐tunes. Presume Mexico, if so likely the Puebla or Jalisco state stations. [Conti‐NH] 980 CUBA COCO La Habana‐La Cruz (El Sapo) MAR 20 1550 – Cuban soft rock, female, ʺEsta es la Co‐co... la Habanaʺ at 1559, back to vocals. Slight WRNE Gulf Breeze, FL present. [Krueger‐FL] 980 CUBA R.Reloj, Moa MAR 18 1041 – Under COCO Cuba. [Krueger‐FL] 990 CUBA R.Guamá, Pinar del Río MAR 28 0400 – Woman with R.Guamá ID, into Cuban anthem; over jumble of domestics. [Connelly‐MA] 1030 MEXICO XEYC Cd. Juárez, Chih. MAR 19 0232 – Checking further into the R.Fórmula I heard still on this frequency, despite reports that XEYC had moved to 1460, as discussed previously. 1030 is all‐talk, typical of Fórmula, someone on phone and someone in studio. This one is close to east/west, or WSW/ENE, which fits for Cd. Juárez. (Occasional interference from another Spanish station, yelling about inmigración, further south, perhaps R.Centro, DF.) 0252, welcoming a new caller, Gabriela, who talks about ʺla compañía petrolera.ʺ This is generally atop, but lots of interference. 0258 PSA by woman about Cámara de Diputados, how many women have been elected to participate, then called Cámara de Diputadas y Diputados. 0259 canʹt pull an ID, just ʺColonia Centroʺ as location of station, which could apply to countless cities. I would not be surprised if local XEYC ID is never inserted anyway, just plugged into 970 XERFR in the DF networked nationwide. 0305 financial news items about employment rate improved in January, 17.77 exchange rate for peso/dólar. At 0313 ad/PSA? for Partido Verde; 0314 bit about Doña Laraʹs pollos fritos in Aguascalientes, along with la comida típica at Feria de San Marcos in Ags; finally, ʺen Radio Fórmula, México tiene sabor,ʺ reference to Grupo Fórmula website; no local IDʹs. [Hauser‐ OK] XEYC was originally licensed for 1460 when the concession was issued in 1949. A 2000 concession renewal says 1030, but not the 2010 renewal which has it back on 1460 kHz. http://rpc.ift.org.mx/rpc/pdfs/090252648002bd9c.pdf is the original 1949 license document, carbon copy from manual typewriter on yellowed paper, with various rubber stamps and punches. [Raymie Humbert, WTFDA Forum via DXLD] 1110 CUBA R.Angulo, Holguín APR 4 0400 – Under WBT; choral national anthem. [Conti‐NH] 1300 MEXICO XEP Cd. Juárez, Chih. MAR 21 0423 – Government talk presumed ʹLa Hora Nacionalʹ, and also presumed XEP, usually 38 kW day power dominator here, so running this weekly show at 10 p.m. local MDT = CST/HCM as border city is already on DST to go along with El Paso. DST in the rest of Mexico does not begin until April 3 after two sesquiweeks of confusion. [Hauser‐OK] 1320 CUBA R.Artemisa, San Cristóbal APR 2 1025 – Old Cuban folk songs, female announcer, ID. Parallel the very wobbly 1000 transmitter. RadioCuba list shows only R.Rebelde from this site, and an Enciclopedia and Voz de Sagua. WRTH 2016 lists it as Ecos de Sagua, and otherwise lists only a Radio 26. My list is the only one with Artemisa, and it has been here since at least 2000 when I first discovered it. [Krueger‐FL] 21 1450 CUBA unID APR 2 1034 – Cuban‐accented female fading up briefly. Several listed though. [Krueger‐FL] 1540 BAHAMAS ZNS1 Nassau MAR 28 0400 – Parallel 810 with ʺItʹs midnight, do you know where your kids are?ʺ followed by soul vocal; dominant. [Connelly‐MA] 1610 ANGUILLA Caribbean Beacon, The Valley MAR 22 0933 – Religious discussion by woman. Very good signal peaks throughout the evening. [Beu‐TX] MAR 25 0200 – Melissa Scott preaching; over Indian music Canadian. [Connelly‐MA] 1610 MEXICO XEUACH R.Chapingo, Chapingo MAR 21 0137 – Very good signal with announcements by woman followed by American pop and jazz music. [Beu‐TX] Don Moore progress report: Since returning from Colombia Iʹve been DXʹing SDR recordings made in Salento in central Colombia. My log, including numerous audio clips, can be found at www.pateplumaradio.com/blog/colombiadx/colombia2016log.html. I still have over half of the Salento recordings to go through so I will be periodically adding more to this. Bandscans I did in several other locations can still be found in my main Colombia DX Blog at www.pateplumaradio.com/blog/colombiadx/. The plan is to combine all of this into one single log that will serve resource for DXʹers elsewhere looking for information on the region.

TRANS‐PACIFIC DX 774 unID MAR 28 1152, 1157‐1202 – JBA carrier looping northwest/southeast and a weaker one on 747, 99% sure to be the NHK superpowers, which are the prime transpacific MW DX beacons here. Thanks to neighbor Richard N Allen near Perry OK, who has been getting these the past few mornings, reminding us that they are back in season. I find no others in 9‐ kHz steps from 531 up to 1053 kHz, nor on 1548, where Australia recently made it to Michigan around same time. Interference from domestic stations can be intense, especially 740 KRMG Tulsa; and 780 KSPI Stillwater which started modulating at 1200 UTC. Enid sunrise today 1223 UTC. [Hauser‐OK] 774 unID APR 3 1145 – Awake a semihour before local sunrise of 1214, so hasten to check for transpacific MW carriers. There is one here on 774, but repeated manipulation of the DX‐398 finds it peaking from the west, not northwest, so instead of NHK Japan itʹs likely 3LO, 50 kW, ABC Melbourne, Australia; another detected at 1150, from west on 702, consistent with 2BL, 50 kW, ABC Sydney. [Hauser‐OK]

INTERNATIONAL NEWS BELARUS: Kai Ludwig and BDXC report that the AM services of Belarus Radyo from Sasnovy on 279 and 1170 kHz were closed on April 1 [Dan Goldfarb, mwmasts], adding another nation to the silent MW countries list [www.bamlog.com/darkcountries.htm]. : The Catholic radio station Radio Maria has resumed broadcasts on 675 kHz after being silent since September 2015. Reported by www.mediamagazine.nl, in September 2015 the station had to cease broadcasting as the operator of the medium wave transmitter in Lopik decided to stop the service. The antenna was dismantled in mid‐September. Radio Maria was still heard in the Netherlands through a network of national commercial radio stations and through a number of regional DAB+ networks. Radio Maria has since renewed its medium wave license until September 2017 and resumed broadcasting from Aarle Rixtel in the North Brabant province with reduced power of 5 kW. Power will eventually be increased to 25 kW to improve coverage of the southern Netherlands and Belgium. Here is (MLB) information for the 2016 season from my Internet searches. Please send me announcer information (and corrections), as some of the web pages either did not list the announcer names or were definitely from last season (and maybe did not change for this season, but I have no way of knowing). And sometimes I cannot determine if an announcer is on radio only, TV only, or both. Any copyright statement on an mlb.com page is probably placed there automatically, even if the page content has not changed for the current season. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_Major_League_Baseball_broadcasters has broadcaster information, and that web site has been updated for the 2016 season (last modified on 5 April 2016, at 04:38.). In some cases I was not sure that the network list was for the 2015 season, as many lists were undated. If a found a list that had no definite 2015 date but differed from the list I found last year, then I treated the list as one for the 2015 season even though the list might be for last season but changed since I downloaded it at the beginning of the season. Note that if a station streams its broadcasts over the Internet, I believe that the station cannot stream the baseball broadcasts because the Major League Baseball organization wants listeners to get a paid subscription via mlb.com. Some of the stations are acutally translators, and I might not list the stationsʹ official six‐character call letters. On the mlb.com site for some teams, the announcers are listed under the ʺRosterʺ tab. It is now time to begin collecting Minor League Baseball information; please send me what you can find. Thanks.

That will conclude the basketball lists for 2015‐16. This season, I really had hoped to publish a lot more networks than just these and the three that appeared in Issue #10, but a lot of things going on with me personally right now got in the way of me devoting as much time as I had wanted to with the column. I hope things won’t be quite so hectic during next basketball season. In the meantime, I should return in the fall with the first of the football networks for the 2016 season. See you then. 73 de RWD

35 DX News Submission Guidelines Most NRC members contribute to DX News by contributing to one or more of our columns. Each column has a volunteer editor who compiles information sent in by club members, or found through research or personal knowledge. Station loggings and tips should be sent to Domestic DX Digest (for stations in the United States and Canada) or International DX Digest (for all other stations). DDXD in turn is divided into East and West columns, with the line between the Eastern and Central Time Zones as the boundary. By longstanding custom, DDXD uses Eastern Local Time (meaning EST or EDT, depending on the season) and IDXD uses Universal Time (UTC). These columns run in every issue of DX News. By and large, loggings should be current (usually not more than one month old) and should give some details of the logging. The goal is to provide a tip that fellow DXers would find helpful in hearing the station themselves. Loggings should be of unusual or rare stations for you. For DDXD, loggings of 50 kW “clear channel” stations within 600 miles or so, or stations you hear on a regular basis, should not be submitted. The rule of thumb is to report a domestic station not more than once a year. However, station news such as changes in format, , patterns of reception, etc., can justify exceptions to these rules of thumb. Your editors will very much appreciate it if you submit your loggings in the format you see here in print in DX News. For example, dates should be “4/14” in DDXD and “APR 14” in IDXD. The more time editors spend changing each of your loggings that say “4‐14” or “04/14,” the less time they have to focus on the content of the column (and the more irate they’ll be when they see your next submission). Please try to keep abbreviations to a minimum; many DX News readers are not native English speakers. Ham abbreviations (other than QRM for man‐made interference, e.g. other stations, and QRN for naturally occurring interference, e.g. static, which seem to be common usage among DXers) should not be used – your publisher is particularly not fond of “OM” and “YL,” not to mention “XYL,” which strike him as a bit dated and sexist for use in print these days. Stations that still “verify” receptions with written or electronic responses to DXer reports are reported to Confirmed DXer (published every two months). The next major group of columns are station news columns. AM Switch is a weekly column that includes official station changes from the U.S. and Canadian licensing authorities and format, slogan, network, and relay station information to update your NRC AM Log. This column was edited for many years by Jerry Starr and then by Bill Hale, but hasn’t had a formal “editor” since September 2012 – the publisher combines information researched by several different members. Members with information to contribute can send it to the publisher directly, or to Wayne Heinen, the NRC AM Log editor. Stations carrying professional and college sports networks are updated each year in Pro Sports Networks and College Sports Networks. Other network lists are published from time to time. If you run across a list (or even a URL to an online network list), please send it to the publisher. Fifty years ago, most of DX News was devoted to Musings of the Members, edited for many years by the late Ernie Cooper, with narratives from each member about recent loggings and other activities. Today, Musings is rarely used to report loggings, but we still encourage members to write in about their DX activities and comment on the hobby and the club. Active debate and discussion is good, but please keep it DX‐related. Virtually every political and personal viewpoint can be found in the NRC, but we have many other places to debate those things. Here, we share the hobby of DXing, and even if we differ on other matters, we can be brought together by radio. We also run a number of achievement columns. Graveyard DX Achievements has mileage records for the stations on the local or “graveyard” channels3 of 1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450, and 1490 kHz. These are maintained online (at www.nrcdxas.org) and updated in DX News. Domestic DX Achievements and International DX Achievements report total stations heard and/or verified by members. The publisher maintains these totals and runs them in DX News as space is available. Finally, DX Toolbox is a (more or less) monthly column with tips on DX strategies, web resources, and other miscellaneous topics. SDR loggings that are too old for DDXD or IDXD but are nonetheless of general interest can be reported here. DX News also includes feature articles on DXpeditions, technical topics (receiver reviews, antenna design, propagation theory, etc.), radio history, station profiles, DXing techniques, and anything else that may be of interest to the MW DXer. Material for publication not falling into any of our columns should be sent directly to the publisher. In general, you should not try to make your submissions “camera‐ready” for publication – use minimal formatting and we’ll take it from there. If you’d like to contribute to a column, but aren’t sure how to do it, you can always contact the column editor first for suggestions. Or you can contact the publisher – preferably by e‐mail at [email protected], or by regular mail too. Participation and contribution by the members are always welcome … we hope to see your DX news in DX News soon!
