Birding trip report Southern Annam, Vietnam Nov 24th – Dec 3rd 2010 by Peter Schmidt, Sweden Introduction After experiencing some of the related Asian avifauna from a couple of previous trips to China, India and Malaysia, this was my first visit to Vietnam. Since I went in November and only had 10 days, I chose to focus my efforts in the south, going to classical birding spots on the Dalat plateau and in Cat Tien. November may not be the best time to see species like Pittas and Pheasants where you rely rather heavily on the vocalisation activity, but I still found the birding to be quite rewarding and I was able to find much of what I had hoped for, including most of the endemic taxa in Dalat. I arranged my stay through Vietnam Birding (www.vietnambirding.com). A bit more costly compared to going completely on my own, but certainly no extremes and it saved me a lot of time dealing with logistics and finding the best birding areas. Especially around Dalat finding the good forest could be tricky for a first time visitor and there is also much happening with new roads and resorts being built every year, e.g. around Lake Tuyen Lam. Species are generally considered to be discrete entities, consisting of a group of (usually interbreeding) individuals that are similar in phenotype and genetic composition, yet differ in significant ways from other species. The study of speciation has focussed on understanding general evolutionary mechanisms involved in the accumulation of differences both at the genetic and phenotypic level. In this thesis, I investigate incipient speciation, an early stage of divergence towards evolutionary independence in closely related natural populations. I make ample use of recent advances in sequencing technology that allow 1) characterizing phenotypic divergence at the level of the transcriptome and 2) delineate patterns of genetic variation at genome-scale from which processes are inferred by using principles of population genetic theory. In the first paper, we assembled a draft genome of the hooded crow and investigated population differentiation across a famous European hybrid zone. -

Temminck’s Tragopan (all photos by Dave Farrow unless indicated otherwise) SICHUAN (Including Northern Yunnan) 16/19 MAY – 7 JUNE 2018 LEADER: DAVE FARROW The Birdquest tour to Sichuan this year was a great success, with a slightly altered itinerary to usual due to the closure of Jiuzhaigou, and we enjoyed a very smooth and enjoyable trip around the spectacular and endemic-rich mountain and plateau landscapes of this striking province. Gamebirds featured strongly with 14 species seen, the highlights of them including a male Temminck’s Tragopan grazing in the gloom, Chinese Monal trotting across high pastures, White Eared and Blue Eared Pheasants, Lady Amherst’s and Golden Pheasants, Chinese Grouse and Tibetan Partridge. Next were the Parrotbills, with Three-toed, Great and Golden, Grey-hooded and Fulvous charming us, Laughingthrushes included Red-winged, Buffy, Barred, Snowy-cheeked and Plain, we saw more Leaf Warblers than we knew what to do with, and marvelled at the gorgeous colours of Sharpe’s, Pink-rumped, Vinaceous, Three-banded and Red-fronted Rosefinches, the exciting Przevalski’s Finch, the red pulse of Firethroats plus the unreal blue of Grandala. Our bird of the trip? Well, there was that Red Panda that we watched for ages! 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Sichuan Including Northern Yunnan 2018 www.birdquest-tours.com Our tour began with a short extension in Yunnan, based in Lijiang city, with the purpose of finding some of the local specialities including the rare White-speckled Laughingthrush, which survives here in small numbers. Once our small group had arrived in the bustling city of Lijiang we began our birding in an area of hills that had clearly been totally cleared of forest in the fairly recent past, with a few trees standing above the hillsides of scrub. -

Eastern China
The magnificent Reeves's Pheasant was one of the many specialties seen on this tour (Brendan Ryan). EASTERN CHINA 3 – 27 MAY 2017 LEADER: HANNU JÄNNES Birdquest’s Eastern China tour, an epic 25 day journey across much of eastern China, focusses on an array of rare Chinese endemics and migrants, and this year’s tour once again proved a great success. The focus of the first part of the tour is to achieve good views of rarities like Spoon-billed Sandpiper, the critically endangered Blue-crowned (Courtois’s) Laughingthrush, the superb Cabot’s Tragopan and Elliot’s Pheasant and the ultra-rare Chinese Crested Tern. This was successfully achieved alongside a plethora of other much sought after species including White-faced Plover, Great Knot, stunning Saunders’s Gulls, Reed Parrotbill, eastern migrants, including Pechora Pipit, Japanese Robin, Japanese Paradise, Yellow-rumped, Narcissus and Mugimaki Flycatchers, and forest species like Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher, White-necklaced Partridge, Silver Pheasant, Buffy and Moustached Laughingthrushes, Short-tailed Parrotbill, Fork-tailed Sunbird and the delightful Pied Falconet. The second part of the tour, the ‘Northeast Extension’, visited a series of sites for various other Chinese specialities. Beginning in Wuhan, we bagged the amazing Reeves’s Pheasant and Crested Ibis, as well as stunners that included Fairy Pitta and Chestnut-winged Cuckoo. We then moved on to Jiaocheng for the fabulous Brown Eared Pheasants before flying on to Beijing, where the mountains of the nearby Hebei province yielded the endemic Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch, Chinese Nuthatch, Green-backed and Zappey’s Flycatchers and the rare Grey-sided Thrush. -

Best of Birding Cambodia & Vietnam Trip Report 5th to 22nd December 2014 (18 days) Giant Ibis at Tmatboey by Glen Valentine Trip Report compiled by Tour Leader: Glen Valentine Trip Report - RBT Best of Birding Vietnam & Cambodia 2014 Tour Summary The south-east Asian countries of Cambodia and Vietnam harbour some of Asia’s most tantalizing species, including a host of endemics, near-endemics and other specialties that are tough or impossible to see elsewhere in their limited distributions. Legendary and iconic avian gems such as Giant and White- shouldered Ibis, White-rumped Falcon, Bengal Florican, Greater Adjutant, Black-headed, Great Slaty and Pale-headed Woodpeckers, Germain’s Peacock-Pheasant, Green Peafowl, Bar-bellied Pitta, Red-vented and Indochinese Barbets, Dalat Shrike-babbler, Indochinese Green Magpie, Red-billed Scimitar Babbler, Grey-crowned Crocias by Luyen Nguyen Orange-breasted and Collared Laughingthrushes, Vietnamese Cutia, Grey-crowned Crocias, Yellow-billed Nuthatch and Vietnamese Greenfinch are just some of the many mouth-watering highlights available on this superb birding adventure. We managed to find and obtain good views of all of these species and many more during our challenging but rewarding Cambodia and Vietnam birding tour. This was our adventure… After our pre-tour extension of remote eastern Cambodia, where we enjoyed sightings of such mega-ticks as Cambodian Tailorbird, Mekong Wagtail, Pied Harrier, Great Hornbill, Milky Stork and Irrawaddy Dolphin, we began our main 2 ½ week tour of these two neighbouring countries. The trip focused on the best birding localities and targeted the endemics, near- endemics and other sought-after species on offer in each country. -
Breeding Biology of an Endemic Bornean Turdid, the Fruithunter (Chlamydochaera Jefferyi), and Life History Comparisons with Turdus Species of the World
The Wilson Journal of Ornithology 129(1):36–45, 2017 BREEDING BIOLOGY OF AN ENDEMIC BORNEAN TURDID, THE FRUITHUNTER (CHLAMYDOCHAERA JEFFERYI), AND LIFE HISTORY COMPARISONS WITH TURDUS SPECIES OF THE WORLD ADAM E. MITCHELL,1,4 FRED TUH,2 AND THOMAS E. MARTIN3 ABSTRACT.—We present the first description of the breeding biology for the Fruithunter (Chlamydochaera jefferyi), a member of the cosmopolitan family Turdidae, and a montane endemic to the tropical Asian island of Borneo. We also compile breeding biology traits from the literature to make comparisons between the Fruithunter and the thrush genus Turdus. Our comparisons indicate that Fruithunters exhibit a slower life history strategy than both tropical and north temperate Turdus. We located and monitored 42 nests in 7 years in Kinabalu Park, Sabah, Malaysia. The mean clutch size was 1.89 6 0.08 eggs, and the modal clutch size was 2 eggs. Mean fresh egg mass was 6.15 6 0.13 g, representing 9.5% of adult female body mass. Average lengths of incubation and nestling periods were 14.56 6 0.24 and 17.83 6 0.31 days respectively. Only the female incubated and brooded the eggs and nestlings, but both the male and female fed nestlings. Female attentiveness during incubation was high throughout, reaching an asymptote around 85% with average on-bouts of 39.0 6 2.5 mins. The daily nest survival probability was 0.951 6 0.025, and the daily predation rate was 0.045 6 0.024. Female feeding rate increased as brooding effort decreased, suggesting that female feeding rate may be constrained by the need to provide heat while nestlings are unable to thermoregulate. -

Appendix 5: Bird Sub-group Report Status, Trends and Recommendations for Hong Kong Birds 1. Overview of Status and Trends Based on the updated information (December 2015) from the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society, a total of 538 species of wild bird have been recorded in the territory. Some are residents, while other species are considered to be visitors at different seasons on both a regular or irregular basis. The primary status of Hong Kong bird species is shown in Table 1 below: Table 1. Among all the bird species found in Hong Kong, a total of 56 are listed as globally threatened or near-threatened by IUCN, including a total of 5 Critically Endangered species. 39 of these are regular residents or visitors to Hong Kong.
