The Changing Role of Leah Hirsig in Aleister Crowley's Thelema, 1919
Aries – Journal for the Study of Western Esotericism 21 (2021) 69–93 ARIES brill.com/arie Proximal Authority The Changing Role of Leah Hirsig in Aleister Crowley’s Thelema, 1919–1930 Manon Hedenborg White Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden [email protected] Abstract In 1920, the Swiss-American music teacher and occultist Leah Hirsig (1883–1975) was appointed ‘Scarlet Woman’ by the British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), founder of the religion Thelema. In this role, Hirsig was Crowley’s right-hand woman during a formative period in the Thelemic movement, but her position shifted when Crowley found a new Scarlet Woman in 1924. Hirsig’s importance in Thelema gradually declined, and she distanced herself from the movement in the late 1920s. The article analyses Hirsig’s changing status in Thelema 1919–1930, proposing the term proximal authority as an auxiliary category to MaxWeber’s tripartite typology.Proximal authority is defined as authority ascribed to or enacted by a person based on their real or per- ceived relational closeness to a leader. The article briefly draws on two parallel cases so as to demonstrate the broader applicability of the term in highlighting how relational closeness to a leadership figure can entail considerable yet precarious power. Keywords Aleister Crowley – Leah Hirsig – Max Weber – proximal authority – Thelema 1 Introduction During the reign of Queen Anne of Great Britain (1665–1714), Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough (1660–1744), was the second most powerful woman in the kingdom. As the queen’s favourite, the Duchess overcame many restrictions hampering women of the time. -

The publications of the A∴A∴ divide themselves into [five] classes. Class “A” consists of books of which may be changed not so much as the style of a letter: that is, they represent the utterance of an Adept entirely beyond the criticism of even the Visible Head of the Organization. Class “B” consists of books or essays which are the result of ordinary scholarship, enlightened and earnest. Class “C” consists of matter which is to be regarded rather as suggestive than anyhting else. Class “D” consists of the Official Rituals and Instructions. [Class “E” consists of manifestoes, broadsides, epistles, and other public statements.] Some publications are composite, and pertain to more than one class. CLASS “A” PUBLICATIONS LIBER I.—Liber B Vel Magi. This is an account of the Grade of Magus, the highest grade which it is ever possible to manifest in any way whatever upon this plane. Or so it is said by the Masters of the Temple. LIBER VII.—Liber Liberi Vel Lapidis Lazvli, Advmbratio Kabbalae Ægyptiorvm Svb Figvrâ VII, being the Voluntary Emancipation of a certain Exempt Adept from his Adeptship. These are the Birth Words of a Master of the Temple. The nature of this book is sufficiently explained by its title. Its seven chapters are referred to the seven planets in the following order: Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Sol, Mercury, Luna, Venus. 1 2 LIBER CCVII LIBER X.—Liber Porta Lucis. -

FOR THE COPYRIGHTTHELEMITES - FOR THE THELEMITES ROSE AND ALEISTER CROWLEY’S STAY IN EGYPT IN 1904 A STUDY OF THE CAIRO WORKING AND WHAT IT LED TO BY PERDURABO ST ã FRATER PERDURABO, to whom this revelation was made with so many signs and wonders, was himself unconvinced. He struggled against it for years. Not until the completion of His own initiation at the end of 1909 did He understand how perfectly He was bound to carry out this work. (Indeed, it was not until his word became conterminous with Himself and His Universe that all alien ideas lost their meaning for him). Again and again He turned away from it, took it up for a few days or hours, then laid it aside. He even attempted to destroy its value, to nullify the result. Again and again the unsleeping might of the Watchers drove Him back to the work; and it was at the very moment when He thought Himself to have escaped that He found Himself fixed for ever with no possibility of again turning aside for the fraction of a second from the path. The history of this must one day be told by a more vivid voice. Properly considered, it is a history of continuous miracle. THE EQUINOX OF THE GODS, 1936 E.V. Theatre Magick: Aleister Crowley and the Rites of Eleusis
THEATRE MAGICK: ALEISTER CROWLEY AND THE RITES OF ELEUSIS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Tracy W. Tupman, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Dr. Joy H. Reilly, Advisor Dr. Alan Woods ________________________________ Advisor Dr. Lesley Ferris Theatre Graduate Program ABSTRACT In October and November of 1910 seven one-act plays were produced at Caxton Hall, Westminster, London, under the collective title The Rites of Eleusis. These public productions were as much an experiment in audience and performer psychology as they were an exotic entertainment. Written, produced and directed by leading cast member, Aleister Crowley, The Rites of Eleusis attempted to present a contemporary interpretation of an ancient myth in order to reignite the role and importance of mysticism in modern society. Through exposing the audience to a variety of sensory stimuli such as incense, rhythmic music, dance, and poetry, it attempted to create within the audience itself an altered state of consciousness which would make them co-celebrants within the performance/ritual. As Crowley stated in the original broadsheet advertisements for the productions, the Rites were intended “to illustrate the magical methods followed by a mystical society which seeks for illumination by ecstasy.” But Crowley intended much more: he hoped the audience would not merely view an “illustration,” but experience an -
A Beginner's Guide to Crowley Books
A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO CROWLEY BOOKS by Frater Julianus The author would like to dedicate this Guide to his three Cats, in recognition of their constant Efforts to distract him from his Work. This is a work in progress. The author welcomes comments and suggestions at [email protected]. Copyright © 2002 Aleister Crowley (1875 - 1947) is certainly the single most influential occult practitioner of the last century, as well as being the most controversial. His literary output is astonishing in both volume and variety, including poetry, drama, and fiction in addition to his core Magical writings. Since his writings have been drawn upon, often without acknowledgement, by nearly every occultist in the English-speaking world it behooves any person interested in Magick or occultism to have some direct acquaintance with Crowley’s work. The problem is that so many of his more famous books are notoriously difficult for the reader, often despite Crowley’s own attempts to clarify his ideas for the general public. Another problem is that in the course of one book he often makes reference to several others, which leads to the impression that you can’t understand one Crowley book until you’ve read them all. Considering how much stuff is currently in print this is pretty daunting, to say the least! I am more than familiar with the frustrations involved in exploring Crowley’s writings. The first Crowley book I ever got— indeed one of my first books on Magick of any kind— was the old Dover edition of Magick in Theory and Practice and almost nothing in it made sense to me at the time. -

Edward Alexander Crowley 12 October 1875 Born Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England 1 December 1947 (aged 72) Died Hastings, East Sussex, England Occupation Occultist, poet, novelist. Spouse Rose Edith Kelly Edward Crowley, Emily Bertha Parents Crowley (neé Bishop) Aleister Crowley (/ˈkroʊli/ KROH-lee; 12 October 1875–1 December 1947), born Edward Alexander Crowley, and also known as both Frater Perdurabo and The Great Beast 666, was an English occultist, mystic, ceremonial magician, poet and mountaineer, who was responsible for founding the religious philosophy of Thelema. In his role as the founder of the Thelemite philosophy, he came to see himself as the prophet who was entrusted with informing humanity that it was entering the new Aeon of Horus in the early 20th century. Born into a wealthy upper-class family, as a young man he became an influential member of the esoteric Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn after befriending the order's leader, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers. Subsequently believing that he was being contacted by his Holy Guardian Angel, an entity known as Aiwass, while staying in Egypt in 1904, he "received" a text known as The Book of the Law from what he believed was a divine source, and around which he would come to develop his new philosophy of Thelema. He would go on to found his own occult society, the A∴A∴ and eventually rose to become a leader of Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), before founding a religious commune in Cefalù known as the Abbey of Thelema, which he led from 1920 through till 1923. -

Fiction-Based Esotericism in the Black Pilgrimage of Jack Parsons and Cameron« " ABSTRACT """"""""""""""""""""""" Rocketeer, poet, and polyamorous proto-feminist, Jack Parsons (1914-1952) is one of the earliest and most legendary followers of Aleister Crowley (1875–1947) and his religion Thelema in America. A precocious only child and avid sci-f reader, Parsons made vital contributions to the American space programme, and was briefy regarded by Crowley as a potential successor. However, Parsons’ romantic side, keen imagination, and tendency to be seduced by literary fction was a source of fric- tion between the two men. Parsons drew freely on gothic horror as well as pulp and sci-f literature in articulating his personal magical universe. In 1946, he undertook the ‘Babalon Working’: a series of magical operations aimed at manifesting the goddess Babalon on earth as a sort of Thelemic messiah. This paper will explore the importance of literature for Parsons’ magical worldview and experimentation, focusing on three key works: Crowley’s Moonchild, Jack Williamson’s Darker Than You Think, and M.R. James’ short story »Count Magnus«. " Manon Hedenborg White holds a PhD in History of Religions from Uppsala University. Her dissertation The Eloquent Blood: The Goddess Babalon and the Construction of Femininities in Western Esotericism was published as a monograph by Oxford University Press (2020).
