(The next meeting will be on the 11th of September a Tuesday at the MARS Pavilion the QE II Recreation Ground). Public Forum: During the public forum the issue was raised of parking in Brownston Street. There were a number of residents from Brownston street and one gave a short presentation on the parking issues, based in a survey of all residents in Brownston Street (see article on p11). The following points were raised from the presentation: • Possible permit/residents’ parking in Brownston Street, • Brownston Street is being used as free parking by various traders in Modbury, • Residents do not want one way traffic in Brownston Street because of possible speeding issues, • Could the yellow lines be revisited • In future better consultation made to areas affected. Planning: There was 1 planning application that was supported, District Council Report: Beth Huntley reported that the planning application for the next phase of 40 houses at Palm Cross has been approved by SHDC. It was also reported that approx. £100K of the S106 money from this development has been allocated towards play facilities and the OSSR within Modbury. The Parish Council requested that the provision of a pavement opposite the school could also be looked at to improve the safety of people walking to school. Police Report: over the last period there were 3 crimes these being Damage, Theft and Assault. In the same period last year there were also 3 crimes. Parking/Traffic: This was an agenda item for this month’s meeting and the following items were discussed:- • Parking issues within Modbury are not just confined to Brownston Street but is a town-wide problem and a solution that covers the whole town is required otherwise the problem will just be pushed from one area to another. • Staff working in Modbury park in the streets to avoid the car parking charges, perhaps a reduced car parking fee could be looked at for traders? • Reduced residents’ parking costs in Poundwell? • Residents’ permits on certain streets? • Check that the yellow lines in Brownston Street are in the correct place. • Traffic calming in Brownston Street to slow vehicles down? • Road Signage for Sheepham and Brownston Street re HGV and possibly having to reverse. The above issues will be pursued by the Parish Council and we will report back in due course. Bus Stops: The Parish Council has been working for two years to get the Palm Cross bus stops reinstated. Jo Woodcock focused everybody’s minds on the issues about the bus stops at a Parish Council meeting last year and with our County Councillor Rufus Gilbert facilitating actions at county level, the bus stops were installed at Palm Cross with the manual work being carried out by members of the Parish Council. We would like to thank everybody who was involved for their work over the years to bring this situation to a successful conclusion. Please note there is no Parish Council Meeting in August with the next meeting being the second Tuesday in September in the Mars Pavilion at the Queen Elizabeth II Recreation Ground. Chris Barnes New Modbury Messenger Distributor Needed The Modbury Messenger is distributed free to all the homes and businesses in Modbury by a dedicated team of distributors who each deliver to one or two streets. John Curry has been the central distributor for the Modbury Messenger for many years and is now retiring from the role. Many thanks to John for all his hard work. The role of central distributor involves receiving the Messengers delivered by the printers then spending a couple of hours counting out the Messengers into lots for each street distributor and then spending about three hours delivering the Messengers around Modbury to the individual street distributors. If you feel you could volunteer to take on the role of the Central Distributor, please contact the Editor, Lynne Barnes, via email [email protected] or phone on 01548 830031. The role could be split in two with one person receiving the Messengers and counting them out into street lots and another person delivering them around Modbury to the street distributors. It is a great opportunity to give something back to the Modbury community, to meet new people and discover parts of Modbury you didn’t even know existed. Are you one of those who have everything laid out a week before your holiday, ready to be packed? Or do you have a mass panic late at night before you leave? And always with that nagging thought in the back of your mind: what have I forgotten? Alongside clothes, toiletries and other essentials, there is that pile of vital documents which accompanies us. Not just the tickets, but the passports (what about that visa?), booking forms, insurance documents – and so the list goes on. Let’s just hope that the queues at the check-in desk are not too long. Guide books and maps are also on the list. But how many will pack a Bible, God’s guide book for life? Will our “religious experience” on holiday be limited to admiring the architecture of an ancient church building? We know where we’re going on holiday, but do we know for certain where we’re going in life? The Bible is God’s handbook, telling us what he is like and what life is all about. But, like any other guide, it needs to be consulted and followed. It’s no use having a fantastic guide book if it’s left on the bookshelf! But sadly, that’s what so often happens with the Bible. If we want to be a good Christian, a good follower of Jesus Christ, we need to read regularly about him. You can, of course, dip into the Bible at random, and there are nuggets to be found throughout its 66 books. Perhaps better is to use Bible aids, such as those produced by the Scripture Union or Bible Reading Fellowship. Holidays give us a good opportunity to take stock, and think about the things that get pushed aside in our busy lives. Is God a remote deity or heavenly Father? Is Jesus someone cruelly executed on a cross, or God’s Son, whose loving sacrifice can wipe out every wrong we’ve ever done? So slip a Bible (or its online equivalent) into the suitcase, and learn about the Maker of the wonderful world we enjoy when on holiday. And of our part in that world. Michael Tagent

Page 8 THE JOB IS DONE! Back in the June Issue, I detailed the tremendous Community Effort that went into moving 20 tons of hardcore to resurface one of our most used Footpaths, but if you remember there was the ‘sting in the tail’. Another 20 tons was still to be moved, raked and compacted to renovate footpath 14 down to Gas House. This was very successfully accomplished on Sunday 24th June, again with a willing band of volunteers but this time only nine in number as we adopted a different working practice. We were much closer to our source of supply (Tom Hendy’s farm yard) and

access was considerably easier (just across the road). Thanks to the ‘Old Boy’ network we had the use of a small dumper truck at very advantageous rates from Pete Douglas, of Ugbourgh. Tom had the equipment to load the dumper, about a ton at a time, and run it right up onto the path. This meant we only had to wheelbarrow three or four tons into place, the rest was just tipped in small piles, directly on the path and raked level. Easy Peasy but it still took nine of us three hours accompanied by much good humoured banter. The best part of the job is always the de-briefing. Once again, by courtesy of Kitty Hendy, we all chilled in the Mill garden helped by copious ice drinks, hot pasties (from the local Butcher) and Kitty’s homemade cake. A good job well done! But we are still in need of volunteer help. One of us, i.e. me, is getting to retirement age. Brian is not too far behind. Is there anyone out there who would like to work with us as another P3 Co-ordinator and learn a little of what it has taken us 15 years to acquire. Page 9 Modbury WI The July meeting of the WI learned about the work of Jane Hutton from Trinity Holistics who specialises in mental health, nutrition, digestive complaints and weight management. Jane also works developing and teaching easy, healthy but budget conscious recipes for those unfamiliar with cooking. Cooking from scratch with raw, locally sourced ingredients is Jane's mantra, which makes economic sense too. Both the young and old alike can suffer from nutritional deficiencies which can lead to stress and anxiety. Two garden visits have taken place since the last meeting, the first to Thorn Gardens, near Wembury, truly a secret and spectacular location high on the hillside overlooking the River Yealm, which we visited on a glorious summer's day towards the end of June. The weather was not quite so clement for our visit to South Wood Farm Gardens at Cotleigh, near Honiton. The mist descended as we neared Exeter, but the damp did not diminish our admiration for this truly wonderful five acre garden set around a C17th thatched cross passage farmhouse. Some members of the Book Group heard Penelope Lively speak about her love of gardening and her latest book 'Life in the Garden.' Penelope referred to her other books during her erudite talk at the 'Ways with Words' Festival in Dartington, including 'Moon Tiger' which won the 1987 Booker Prize and was voted the 1980s decade best book in the 50 years of the Mann Booker award. It was truly a wonderful and enriching occasion. We wheeled out the barrow at the Modbury Barrow Market on 30th June, on another very hot summer's day. It was almost too hot to cook the day before so some goods were freshly baked very early that morning. The last market we will be attending will be on 25th August, weather permitting. The WI is changing its meeting day from a Friday to a Tuesday, which it is hoped will be more convenient, but has meant alterations to our programme for 2018/2019, which we will publish in the next edition of the Modbury Messenger. In the meantime if you would like to know more about Modbury WI and its groups, please contact me on 01548 830363. Rosemary Parker

Page 10 Parking Problems in Brownston Street I have been offered this opportunity to write about my concerns about the increased parking in Brownston Street combined with the recent reduction in parking capacity. I asked if anybody on the Modbury Nextdoor website knew why the new yellow lines had been put at the top of Brownston Street and Silverwell. People explained about the safety issues at that junction and nobody would argue that people's safety is paramount. This then raised for me how the increase in parking could be better managed. There is a wider parking problem in Modbury than just Brownston Street. I am the first to accept that when you buy a house with road parking, that's the deal. I am fully aware that I have no right to park outside my house, but of late it has got harder to park anywhere, not just nearby. Following the Modbury website posts advice and comments, I undertook a brief two question survey about if resident parking permits may be a solution and if people would be in agreement with them.I posted 48 surveys to houses facing into Brownston Street, I had 31 responses , thank you to everyone who took the time. Of those responses, 25 thought there may be a role for resident permit parking, 6 didn't. Also, just a bit of data, by my counting there are potentially 52 parking spaces on Brownston Street and 17 houses have off road parking, so at two cars per house (if off road parking was used) there would/should be enough parking. People commented in a big way, I had letters, rants and people stopping to tell me how they felt about the increased parking and the reduced spaces. Thank you again, all were welcome. The two main issues people felt strongest about were, Brownston Street being used as free parking for people working in Modbury, and people generally using Brownston Street as free parking when there was a car park available. I gathered the comments into themes and took all of the information to the Parish Council. We talked about the parking problems encountered in the wider town and about the under utilisation of the lower Poundwell car park. Just a bit of my own research, for seven days I went to the lower car park 10:30am each morning and counted cars. There are 42 spaces including skips and there was an average of nine cars each day using the car park at that time. We talked about incentivising shop keepers and workers and local residents to use this car park by financially attractive permits. We also talked about resident or permit parking on Brownston Street to encourage people to use the car parks. The parish council have agreed to go away and investigate these options. We also talked about the huge lorries going down Brownston Street and the speed of vehicles up the road. Another strong theme from comments was that one way traffic would not help. It would result in even faster driving up Brownston Street, especially at the top now the road opposite Silverwell is more open. This road is increasingly dangerous with an increased footfall caused by people having to walk so far to get to their cars. I am aware people have really strong and diverse views and would really encourage you to contact the Parish Council as well. I felt listened to and I will be at the next meeting and each thereafter to follow all of these points. Thank you again for everybody's support. Gail Richardson

Page 12 The Modbury History Society has been active despite the summer lecture break. A group of volunteers headed by the chairman, Barbara Thomas visited the conservation studio of Modbury the South West Heritage Trust (The Devon and Local Studies Service) at Exeter with a selection of the Society's archives, History Society which need urgent preservation. The Record Office has wonderful facilities including a drying room where our records now reside for two months. The cleaning and conservation of our documents will then take place during the winter months at the centre by members of the Society under the expert guidance of the Trust's staff. It was sobering to be informed that most family records are not being kept properly for longevity and, for example, on no account should documents or photographs be stored in plastic. The Heritage Trust has useful information and guidance in their publication entitled "Stopping the Rot,' which would be invaluable to all family historians. The Friends of Devon's Archives have produced Devon Document Donor Cards, which can be kept with personal papers asking that they be offered to the Devon Record Office if one's descendants or inheritors do not wish to keep them. The papers can then be preserved for future generations. The annual History Society visit took place on a blisteringly hot July day to Wheal Martyn, near St Austell. Wheal Martyn is a World Heritage Site and has been a working China Clay works since Victorian times. It was fascinating to see the old water wheel and buildings but disturbing to learn of the hardships endured by the mine workers in times past. The Society's 2018/2019 lecture programme is being finalised and will be published in the next edition of the Modbury Messenger but the first meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 12th September at The White Hart, Modbury.
