© 2014, Global Media Journal -- Canadian Edition Volume 7, Issue 1, pp. 69-85 ISSN: 1918-5901 (English) -- ISSN: 1918-591X (Français) Radicalization of the Settlers’ Youth: Hebron as a Hub for Jewish Extremism Geneviève Boucher Boudreau University of Ottawa, Canada Abstract: The city of Hebron has been a hub for radicalization and terrorism throughout the modern history of Israel. This paper examines the past trends of radicalization and terrorism in Hebron and explains why it is still a present and rising ideology within the Jewish communities and organization such as the Hilltop Youth movement. The research first presents the transmission of social memory through memorials and symbolism of the Hebron hills area and then presents the impact of Meir Kahana’s movement. As observed, Hebron slowly grew and spread its population and philosophy to the then new settlement of Kiryat Arba. An exceptionally strong ideology of an extreme form of Judaism grew out of those two small towns. As analyzed—based on an exhaustive ethnographic fieldwork and bibliographic research—this form of fundamentalism and national-religious point of view gave birth to a new uprising of violence and radicalism amongst the settler youth organizations such as the Hilltop Youth movement. The Rise and Fall of Suicide Bombings in the Second Intifada Yoram Schweitzer The decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict has seen several rounds of violence and has claimed many casualties on both sides. The second 1 intifada occupies a particularly painful place, especially for the Jewish population, which suffered an unprecedented high casualty toll – dead and injured – in a relatively short period of time. As part of the violence perpetrated by the Palestinians during the second intifada, suicide bombings played a particularly prominent role and served as the primary effective weapon in the hands of the planners. Since the outbreak of the second intifada in late September 2000 until today, there have been a total of 146 suicide attacks, and more than 389 2 suicide attacks have been foiled. Although the relative representation in the total number of hostile activities waged by Palestinian organizations was not high, suicide attacks were without a doubt the most significant component in the death and destruction they sowed. In the decade since September 2000, 516 of the 1178 deaths (43.8 percent) were caused by suicide attacks. In addition to the attacks on Israeli civilians, which also resulted in thousands of physical and emotional casualties, suicide bombings helped the Palestinian organizations instill fear among the Israeli public and create a sense – even if temporary – of danger on the streets, on public transportation, and at places of entertainment. This essay presents a short description and analysis of the rise and fall of suicide terrorism in the decade since the second intifada erupted. It then presents the Israeli and Palestinian perspectives regarding their relative success in attaining their respective goals. -

Giles Prepared for: Defense Threat Reduction Agency Advanced Systems and Concepts Office Comparative Strategic Cultures Curriculum Contract No: DTRA01-03-D-0017, Technical Instruction 18-06-02 This report represents the views of its author, not necessarily those of SAIC, its sponsors, or any United States Government Agency Continuity and Change in Israel’s Strategic Culture Gregory Giles STRATEGIC CULTURE DEFINED For the purposes of this project, strategic culture is defined as: Shared beliefs, assumptions, and modes of behavior derived from common experiences and accepted narratives (both oral and written), that shape collective identity and relationships to other groups, and which determine appropriate ends and means for achieving security objectives. This definition is well-suited to consideration of the Israeli case. As explained below, Israel has cultivated—some would say imposed—a set of beliefs and assumptions on its citizenry as a means of simultaneously building and defending the fledgling Jewish state in the face of deep Islamic hostility. This belief system is rooted, in part, in such ancient texts as the Bible but is under considerable pressure from contemporary demographic, ideological, and religious changes in Israeli society. As a result, there is both continuity and change in what passes for “appropriate” ends and means of achieving security in Israeli terms. Indeed, the strategic culture framework could provide a useful tool for anticipating how the Jewish state might come to grips with its ongoing internal, as well as external, security challenges. The Dispute over the Temple Mount / Al-Haram Al-Sharif in Jerusalem MOSHE MA’OZ April 2015 n There is a danger that Arabs and Jews, the children of Abraham, are becoming in- creasingly engaged in a religious conflict. The major focus of this conflict is the Tem- ple Mount/Al-Haram Al-Sharif and East Jerusalem/Al-Quds Al-Sharif. Amalgamated with nationalist and political components of the Arab-Israeli dispute, this conflict also derives from two opposed processes: growing Islamic Judeophobia in the Arab and Muslim world, on the one hand; and accelerated Jewish Islamophobia in Israel and the diaspora, on the other. n Top Israeli and Palestinian leaders, eager to score political gains, have not put an end to these dangerous phenomena. Mahmud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, is not in a position to curb his people’s anger and frustration regarding alleged Jewish intentions to destroy the Al-Aqsa mosque. Israeli Prime Minister Ben- yamin Netanyahu and other right-wing Israeli leaders continue to use the Jewish sanctity of the Temple Mount to garner public support. n Given this situation, the new Israeli government must negotiate with the Palestinian Authority and the Arab League, and arrive at an agreed solution. The United States and the European Union should induce the relevant parties to settle their differen- ces, particularly over the issue of the Temple Mount / Al-Haram Al-Sharif. Otherwise, a bloody Muslim-Jewish conflict may spread globally, especially in European coun- tries. Thus, these countries have a special interest in promoting peaceful dialogues among their Muslim and Jewish citizens. -

Tuten (Slippery Rock University) Published on H-Judaic (November, 2013) Commissioned by Jason Kalman Religious Worldviews and Evolving Political Realities Motti Inbari's book is an insightful introduction into messianic religious Zionists' (MRZ) evolving worldviews as they relate to political negotiations over land compromises. Inbari is particularly insightful in his discussion of the changes in approach since the Oslo period in the 1990s, and in my opinion this is the most important contribution of his book. He begins his book by situating the topic within literature dealing with cognitive dissonance (Leon Festinger’s thesis)[1]; with religious fundamentalisms (Gabriel A. Almond, Scott R. Appleby, and Emmanuel Sivan); and with the advent of Gush Emunim and the emergence of the settlement movement (Gideon Aran and Gershom Gorenberg). For primary source material, Inbari draws on the writings of MRZ rabbis and on the settlers' official monthly and weekly publications--Nekuda and Besheva respectively. These sources leave much unsaid, of course, but given the evolving relationship and tensions between the MRZ community and the State of Israel, inquiring into other primary sources within the MRZ community itself, sources that would give valuable and critical insight into the changing attitudes of its rabbinical leaders and their followers, would raise a red flag at best, outright hostility at worst. -

The seeming impossibility of a Jew killing another Jew, as Leah Rabin described, cemented a sobering truth about the peace process: that there were religious fundamentalists – on both sides – eager to derail it. This derailment has culminated in the al-Aqsa Intifada, the pre-meditated violent upsurge against the Israeli occupation to liberate Palestine, which has plagued the region and its peoples since September 2000. This paper identifies major tributaries (trends that strengthen and renew a cult of martyrdom) in Palestinian society. Specifically historical/religious tradition, indoctrination of children and the masses by the Palestinian Authority, economic disparity, reinforcement of violence based on popular support, and the nature of military occupation are explored. Special attention is also given to the role international media and other states play in preventing an organic development and solution of the conflict. When a Palestinian suicide bomber detonates him/herself, Israeli society interprets this as irrational and maniacal. However, the underlings of Palestinian martyrdom - its infusion of nationalist goals with religious tenets - distinguishes the Palestinian suicide bomber as a new political reality of the Intifada. -

JEWISH FUNDAMENTALISM IN THE STATE OF ISRAEL RESEARCH ARTICLE Jewish Fundamentalism in the State of Israel Saman Ayesha Kidwai1 New Delhi, India Abstract Fundamentalism is “a type of militantly conservative religious movement characterized by advocacy of strict conformity to sacred texts.”2 Ordinarily, the entire blame for the violent acts that are associated with it is laid on the shoulders of Islam and its followers. Fingers are hardly pointed in the direction of Jewish fundamentalism, lest they are termed as anti-Semitic. Jewish Fundamentalism can also be referred to as Militant/Religious Zionism. Zionism in itself emerged as a political movement for the establishment of the national home for the Jews in what was earlier, the British controlled Palestine. While Judaism in itself is believed to be a peaceful religion by several of its followers, however, the Zionists in Israel, referring to certain texts within the scriptures, have indulged in deadly attacks within their country, in the settlement areas, as well as in Palestine. Judaism for them was religion as well as a nationality. This became a point of contention with the more orthodox Jews. Religious Zionism has schooled its believers into submitting to the ideology of messianic Zionism according to which their Messiah would not reappear till the time both Israel and Palestine are cleansed of the non-Jewish population. Racism, Incitement, and the Suppression of Religious Speech Noah Feldman, Bemis Professor of Law, Harvard University I. On Monday, June 27, 2011, Rabbi Dov Lior was driving from Hebron to Migron, an illegal settlement north of Jerusalem, when he was pulled over and arrested by Israeli police. 1 Lior, one of the most prominent rabbis in the nationalist-religious movement in Israel, was born in 1933 in Breslau, Silesia; survived the Holocaust; and made his way to Israel in 1948. As a student at Merkaz ha-Rav Kook, the leading nationalist-religious institution of higher learning in Israel, Lior distinguished himself and became a protégé of Rabbi Tzvi Yehuda Kook, son of the eponymous founder of the institution, Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook. Today he is the rabbinical head (rosh yeshiva) of the talmudic academy (yeshiva) in Kiryat Arba, a settlement located since 1968 on the outskirts of Hebron on the West Bank. The immediate reason for Lior’s arrest was his open refusal over the course of several months to appear for questioning by Israeli police in connection with a one page endorsement -- a rabbinical blurb, if you will -- for a book entitled Torat ha-Melekh: Dine Nefashot Beyn Yisra’el le-‘Ammim – in English, roughly, The Law of the King: Legal Principles of Life and Death Between Israel and the Nations .2 The book, co-authored by two young nationalist-religious rabbis and published in 2009 by a yeshiva, Od Yosef Hai (Joseph Still Lives) originally located 1 http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4087844,00.html ; http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/145224 2 5770 (=2009-10); published by “the Torah Institution beside Yeshiva Od Yosef Hai.” The term dine nefashot , which literally means “the laws of souls,” ordinarily refers to the law of capital punishment.
