THE DIRECTORATE OF PUBLIC LIBRARIES
The Directorate of Public Libraries was formed in 1972 in order to improve
library services. Public Libraries are being opened in Tamil Nadu as per the
“Tamil Nadu Public Libraries Act, 1948” with an aim to provide best reading
for the greatest number at the least cost.
The pride of the state is the Connemara Public Library situated in the heart of
the Chennai city. Apart from being the State Central Library, it is one among
the four National Repository Libraries in India. Also, the State has three
famous old libraries viz. Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji Sarasvati Mahal Library,
Thanjavur, Dr.U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer Library, Chennai and Maraimalai Adigal
Library, Chennai.
There are 4042 libraries functioning in the State under the administrative control of the Directorate of Public Libraries.

1. Course Title
“CERTIFICATE IN LIBRARY MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION SCIENCE” (CLMIS)

3. Duration of Course
The Duration of the course will be six months, during which the student will
have to work in Anna Centenary Library
In the first month intensive Teaching Sessions will be conducted nearly for
140 hours to orient the students on the functioning of Libraries and Library
Transactions.
The subsequent instructions of the course will be conducted on the Fridays
and Saturdays of every week for 240 hours as a whole.
Two batches will be conducted every year i.e., January - June and July –
December
Eligibility for joining the Course
Academic: Minimum Qualification is a pass in +2
Age: The Upper Age limit will be 35 years (Persons wit h good academic
record will be selected for the course and following the norms of Community
Rotation as per rules)
