Artists’ Biographies In Order Of Event CONCERT Friday, March 10, 8pm at Forest Hill Church Jorge Cardoso has given concerts and lectured on classical guitar technique, interpretation, Latin American Music, Baroque Music, and Music Composition at conferences, seminars and classes around the world. He has composed over 350 works: suites and pieces for solo guitar; duets (two guitars, guitar and violin, guitar and harpsichord, guitar and flute); trio and quartets; string quartet; quintets (guitar and strings, guitar and wind instruments); concertos (for two guitars and strings, for guitar and orchestra); an orchestra for strings and songs for voice and guitar. He is the recipient of the highest awards at various competitions and festivals. In addition to credits as a concert guitarist, composer and musicologist, he is a medical doctor. Jorge Cardoso is president of GUIA (Guitarristas de América), an international organization dedicated to the diffusion of music of the Americas. Website: http:// pagina.dej_cardoso. The soprano, Liliana Rodriguez, was born in Cordoba, Argentina. As the lead vocalist of the Argentine folklore group, Grupo Azul, she has made various recordings, radio and television appearances and toured internationally. In addition to performing popular Argentine music, she has made a name for herself as a soloist in Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte (Despina) and Zauberflöte (Papagena), Contes d’hoffman (Giuletta), Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Manuel de Falla’s El Sombrero de Tres Picos, El Amor Brujo and Brecht/Weill’s Die Sieben Todsunden (Ana). She has also worked with the ensemble for ancient baroque music, Musica Segreta. In 1992 she moved to Paris and joined the ensemble, Alternancia, performing the music of Juan Jose Mosalini and Marisa Manchada; she also makes regular appearances with Esquina, the trio for contemporary tango. Belgian classical guitarist Raphaëlla Smits is called quite rightly “une Grande Musicienne.” Praised by the New York Times as “uncommonly musical,” she was the first woman to be awarded the coveted First Prize in Spain’s Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Francisco Tárrega Competition. Since then she has toured the world many times over, performing frequently in the music capitols of Western and Eastern Europe and in North and South America. A persuasive advocate of both the modern eight string and the 19th century classical guitars, she studied music at the Royal Conservatories of Antwerp and Brussels, was a student of José Tomás at the Catedra Andrés Segovia in Spain, and went on to win prizes in the Granada and Palma Mallorca International Competitions. Ms. Smits’ much sought after recordings on the Accent label are distinguished for their “lyricism, sentiment and passion” (American Record Guide). SYMPOSIUM ON EARLY INSTRUMENTS AND NOTATION Saturday, March 11, 10am sponsored by The Museum Advisory Council at the Western Reserve Historical Society Kenneth Bé is a graduate of Yale University and worked as a paintings conservator at The Cleveland Museum of Art for eighteen years. Currently, he makes a living as a freelance restorer of paintings in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition to his expertise as an art conservator, Mr. Bé is also an accomplished lutenist. He has been an active performer of Renaissance and Baroque lute music for 30 years. He counts among his coaches lutenist Paul O’Dette and has performed in lute duet concerts with Ronn McFarlane. Mr. Bé has performed in the Boston Early Music Festival and has given recitals across the U.S., in Japan and in Europe. Erik Mann is professor of Guitar Literature and Guitar Pedagogy at the Cleveland Institute of Music under department head Jason Vieaux. He also heads the guitar departments at Edinboro University and Mercyhurst College, both in Northwest Pennsylvania, where he teaches majors in Classical Guitar Performance and Music Education. In addition, he teaches for The Cleveland Music School Settlement, and during the summer teaches for the music department of the Pennsylvania Governor’s School of the Arts - a program which draws the most talented high school students from around the state of Pennsylvania. Stephen Toombs holds degrees in music and musicology from Washington University (St. Louis) and a soloist diploma from the Netherlands Royal Conservatory (the Hague) where he studied lute and basso continuo with Toyohiko Satoh. He is the director of the early music quartet Ensemble Lautenkonzert and is active as a solo and accompanying lutenist, theorbist and baroque guitarist. Mr. Toombs is the music librarian for Case Western Reserve University.     Baltimore Chamber Orchestra PRESS PACKET markand thakar, music director 2015-2016 www.thebco.org HISTORY markand thakar, music director Baltimore Chamber Orchestra’s first performance, led by Maestra Anne Harrigan, was on January 29, 1984. She introduced the audience to a classical orchestra offering virtuoso performances that touch the heart. From its beginning, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra has grown to occupy an essential niche in the thriving arts scene of greater Baltimore. Our core repertoire is the overtures, concertos, and symphonies of Classical Era masters Haydn, Mozart Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Schubert, which we perform with the actual sized ensemble for which it was composed. BCO remains a group of exceptional musicians who are passionate about their performances. Indeed, the orchestra strives to meet the same standard established at its inception in 1984: to provide accessible, high-quality, classical music with an intimate touch. Markand Thakar joined BCO as music director in June 2004. Maestro Thakar made his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1997 and has since appeared with that orchestra multiple times, along with numerous orchestras across North America. Former music director of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and principal conductor of Duluth Festival Opera, he is co- director of graduate conducting at the Peabody Conservatory and the author of two seminal works: Counterpoint: Fundamentals of Music Making (Yale University Press, 1990) and Looking for the “Harp” Quartet: An Investigation into Musical Beauty (University of Rochester Press, 2011). Since the 2009-10 season, Maestro Thakar’s annual intensive conducting programs bring dozens of conductors from around the world to work with him and the BCO musicians.

    DUO AMARAL - Bio Jorge Amaral and Mia Pomerantz-Amaral formed Duo Amaral in 2008 and were soon established in the international guitar scene, garnering high accolades from the media and from devoted audiences. During a tour in Italy, their recital was described in Il Messaggero Veneto as “masterful, with poetic virtuosity and intensity of expression”. Mike Telin of ClevelandClassical.com, described the duo as "superb, thoughtful musicians". Their debut album 'Súplica' was released in 2011, featuring the title work: a world-premier composition written by Mr. Amaral's father, Victor Manuel Amaral Ramirez. Céline Keating of Minor 7th Magazine described the CD as “...a sublime album of classical music for two guitars...”. Their Second album 'Textura' was released in 2013 and includes several of their own arrangements. Al Kunze of Soundboard Magazine describes: “Duo Amaral’s Textura is a superb disc, featuring beautiful music, exquisite playing, and exemplary recording. Mia Pomerantz- Amaral and Jorge Amaral play with extraordinary precision allied with delicacy, nuance, and virtuosity in equal measures.” (March 2014). And Bradford Werner of This is Classical Guitar continues: Textura “…deliver[s] some of the best ensemble work, musical expression, and repertoire. Another great album release!… One of the premier classical guitar duos of today!" Their latest album ‘Key West’ was released in March of 2017 and features an all Latin-American program including the world premier of ‘Key West Suite’, dedicated to the duo. RICHARD E. RODDA JONATHAN LESHNOFF Double Concerto for Clarinet and Bassoon (2018) Jonathan Leshnoff was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on September 8, 1973, and resides in Baltimore, Maryland. His works have been performed by more than 65 orchestras worldwide in hundreds of orchestral concerts. He has received commissions from Carnegie Hall, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the symphony orchestras of Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Kansas City, Nashville, and Pittsburgh. His Double Concerto for Clarinet and Bassoon was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony and co-commissioned by the Greenwich Village Orchestra and International Wolfegg Concerts of Wolfegg, Germany. These performances mark the world premiere. The score calls for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets, bass clarinet, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, and strings.

His six quartets were written (between 1907 and 1939) at crucial turning points in the composer’s creative development. From the elegiac tone of Quartet no.1 (reflecting an unhappy love affair) to the sadness and wry parody of no.6, composed on the eve of World War II, by way of the mirror forms and atmospheric ‘night music’ of nos.4 and 5, they represent perhaps the biggest interpretative challenge in the genre alongside the Beethoven quartets. A challenge triumphantly met here by the Heath Quartet. Future plans include complete cycles of Jörg Widmann’s string quartets at Kilkenny Festival, Berlin’s Boulez Saal and Wigmore Hall, as well as numerous appearances at summer festivals in the United Kingdom and beyond. Their debut recording of Tippett’s string quartets (Wigmore Hall Live) received widespread acclaim and won the Gramophone Chamber Disk of the Year in 2016. A subsequent release on Harmonia Mundi of Tchaikovsky Quartets 1 & 3 was selected as Disk of the Week by both The Sunday Times and BBC Radio 3.
