Specific geological, hydrogeological and hydrochemical conditions of the above mentioned occurrences of mineral water are the reasons for treated them as parts of a common hydrogeological structure, denoted as Dolna Banya thermal water basin. Scope and boundaries of the basin are delineated. A description of individual mineral water occurrences is presented. The discharge of each of them is assessed on actual measurements and observations of discharge regime. The total outflow of mineral water from the occurrences of the Dolna Banya thermal water basin recently amounts to 53 l/s. The hydrochemical characteristic of mineral waters is presented as well as regularities in the distribution of composition and temperature. A conceptual computer model of the Dolna Banya thermal water basin is compiled and it is used for determining the cathcment areas for each of the mineral water occurrences. The model confirms hydraulic connection between specific parts of the basin and in the meanwhile studies the determination of Kostenets occurrence of mineral water as an autonomous part of the basin.

Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM VI) Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material All minerals and raw materials contain radionuclides of natural origin. For (NORM VI) most human activities involving minerals and raw materials, the levels of exposure to these radionuclides are not significantly greater than normal background levels. However, certain work activities can give rise to signif- Proceedings icantly enhanced exposures that may need to be controlled by regulation. Material giving rise to these enhanced exposures has become known as of an International Symposium naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM). Historically, most regula- tory attention has been focused on the mining and processing of uranium Marrakesh, Morocco, 22–26 March 2010 ore, because such activities are a direct consequence of the radioactivity in the ore and form part of the nuclear fuel cycle. Over the past decade or two, however, more and more countries have introduced measures to reg- 1 ulate exposures arising from a wider range of natural sources. The NORM VI symposium, which was held in Marrakesh, Morocco, from 22–26 March 2010, provided an important opportunity to review the developments that had taken place during the three year period since the NORM V sym- posium in 2007. This period, which began with the publication of new radiation protection recommendations by the International Commission on Radiological Protection, was characterized by ongoing activities to revise international standards on radiation protection and safety. These Proceedings contain all 38 papers accepted for oral presentation and four rapporteur reports, as well as a summary that concludes with the main findings of the symposium. Text versions of 43 poster presentations are provided on a CD-ROM which accompanies these Proceedings.

The Municipality of Kostenets proposed and implemented the project ‘Raising Awareness of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union’ with the participation of a team formed by students and teachers from ‘Georgi Sava Rakovski’ Vocational High School. The activities of the team included: 1) research of information about the European Union and the Bulgarian Presidency; 2) project based teaching, where students and teachers learnt together about the role of the European funds for the development of Kostenets Municipality; 3) active citizenship through students’ participation in discussions about global and local issues with a member of the European Parliament, the town mayor and municipality experts. The project gave opportunities to the students to understand and experience the dimensions of the glocal education, to appreciate the citizenship not only as consumers’ privileges but also as personal responsibilities, to raise their awareness for the global issues and to believe that each of them can contribute to the common good at local and global level.
