We particularly appeal to the international communities and request investigation of this systematic, ongoing, egregious violation of human rights committed by the Government of the People’s Republic of China against Falun Gong. Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is a traditional Chinese spiritual practice that includes exercise and meditation. Its principles are based on the values of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. The practice began in China in 1992 and quickly spread throughout China and then beyond. By the end of 1998, by the Chinese government's own estimate, there were 70 - 100 million people in China who had taken up the practice, outnumbering Communist Party member. Despite the fact that it was good for the people and for the stability of the country, former President JIANG Zemin launched in July 1999 an unprecedented persecution of Faun Gong out of fears of losing control. Today the persecution of Falun Gong still continues in China. As of the end of March 2004, 918 Falun Gong practitioners have been confirmed to die from persecution.

    2017 ACTA UNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE PAG. 109–125 PHILOLOGICA 4 / ORIENTALIA PRAGENSIA FIGHTING SWAYING IMBALANCES OF POWERS: THE TRANSFORMATION OF SPIRITUAL FREEDOM IN TANG TALES INTO INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM IN HOU HSIAO-HSIEN’S THE ASSASSIN FRANK KRAUSHAAR ABSTRACT The appearance of Hou Hsiao-hsien’s 侯孝賢 film The Assassin in 2015 and its distinction the same year with the Best Director’s award at the film festival in Cannes has launched an avalanche of confused and confusing reviews in print-media and on the internet. This partly may have been due to the gap between expectations the film’s attribution to the wuxia genre generated in the public and what actually Hou expects from his audience. Despite an unmistakable historical contextualisation at the heart of power-struggling between the Tang imperial court and the ruling house of Weibo, a state that manages to assert its de facto independence behind a diaphanous diplomatic veil of loyalty, the story of the young female assassin Nie Yinniang develops into a sphere of its own, which seems to extend beyond the confines of history and strongly suggests a freedom unspeakable within the intellectual parameter of Tang. This paper traces back the film’s narrative based on Tang dynasty tales and its cinematic language, and arrives at an interpretation related to contemporary social and political topics such as the female/male body and violence. It also touches upon the cross-strait relations’ issues and the “Western” idea of freedom expressed in an apparently traditional Chinese narrative context. Some critics argue that Wang’s popularity among the urban middle class since the 1990s comes from the fact that his way of thinking and the complexity of narrative satisfy the tastes of urban elites; while others suggest that his eccentricity – in both life and works – is attractive to readers in a newly individualistic generation. This paper tries to examine Wang’s searching for the independence of spirit by analyzing his narrative strategy. Wang’s intertextual narrator Wang Er, generally considered as the author’s alter ego, is granted much authority that allows him to intrude and comment on the stories.

    WRESTLING WITH THE CENTRAL STATE: COMPARATIVE ETHNIC REGIONAL AUTONOMY IN CHINA AND RUSSIA by Sansar Tsakhirmaa (Sier San) A dissertation submitted to the Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June, 2018 © Sansar Tsakhirmaa (Sier San) 2018 All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation compares ethnically-based identity politics in two constitutionally- defined multi-ethnic states, China and Russia, by focusing upon one type of prescriptive institution, territorially-based formal autonomy designated at the sub-national levels for ethnic minorities. Intriguingly, some of these ethno-regions have been more capable of actually exercising the formally promulgated autonomy than others. What can explain the variations across different ethno-regions in terms of implemented autonomy outcome? This dissertation develops an analytical framework that consists of a response variable, an ethno-region’s implemented autonomy outcome, an explanatory variable, an ethno- region’s inter-ethnic boundary-makings, an intervening variable, titular elites’ bargaining capacity, and two condition variables, formal arrangements of center-periphery relations and party-state relations. An ethno-region’s implemented autonomy outcome is assessed in terms of compliance with the corresponding autonomy-establishing legal document(s) on three dimensions, political participation, economic development, and cultural promotion among the ethno-region’s titular ethnic population. Court decision: In February 2010, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Zhongyuan District People’s Court of Zhengzhou City, Henan Province. Place of imprisonment: No. 1 Prison of Henan Province Other information: He was regarded by the Chinese authorities as a major criminal of the state and had long been on the wanted list. To arrest him, authorities offered 500,000 RMB as a reward to informers who gave tips leading to his arrest to police. He was arrested at the home of a Christian in Xuchang City, Henan Province. Based on the information from a Christian serving his sentence in the same prison, HE Zhexun was imprisoned in a separate area and not allowed to contact other prisoners.     Transgression in Texts: Literary Quality of Qi from Tang Tales of Marvels to Wang Xiaobo’s Tang Tales by Xiaowen Xu A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Xiaowen Xu 2014 Transgression in Texts: Literary Quality of Qi from Tang Tales of Marvels to Wang Xiaobo’s Tang Tales Xiaowen Xu Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto 2014 ABSTRACT The modern Chinese writer, Wang Xiaobo (1952-1997), retold three tales from the Tang dynasty (618-907) twice during the last two decades of the twentieth century. In this dissertation I examine the intertextual and intratextual relations between these tales and find that Wang Xiaobo’s efforts at literary adaptation belong to a long tradition of Chinese fiction writing in which the writer’s perceptions of the world are displayed through transformative experiments with language, genre, and reader’s expectations, experiments based on the pursuit of qi 奇 (“the marvelous”) in Chinese narrative literature. The literary quality of qi was first associated with Tang chuanqi 傳奇, or Tang tales of marvels. The Tang literati made use of shared literary knowledge in writing the Tang tales, and by engaging a literary spirit of you 遊 (“freedom of roaming”) in transgressing generic restrictions imposed by their classical education, they were able to present new perspectives on their own world. I argue that it is the pursuit of the literary quality of qi in Tang tales that makes transgression possible for the Tang literati in textual, generic, and thematic terms.
