NOVEMBER 2013 THE RED HACKLE 1 “I’m stuck at the bridge, I might be late” If you cannot live without reporting your every thought on Facebook and Twitter, then The HALO Trust is not for you. Brigadier Melvile The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion Jameson who is both the Lord Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross as well as President of The Royal Regiment of Scotland The Black Watch Association officially opened the building and a full report and update is contained on page 7. The Affiliated Regiments Balhousie Castle is the home of the Regimental Association and the Association has been and busy at a local level with Branches enjoying annual dinners and lunches and the Association The Black Watch Association Secretariat have organised the AGM, the biennial Muster at Aberfeldy, as well as the Reunion in the grounds of the newly refurbished Castle. At the same time the planning for the dedication of the memorial at Black Watch Corner has stepped up a gear and details were sent out to the November 2013 Regimental family over the summer. No. 132 The statue has been completed and the granite plinth remains to be cut but the Belgian authorities in Zonnebeke have agreed to prepare the ground-works to accept the granite plinth and statue, to landscape the area of the memorial and to look after the statue in perpetuity. I would draw readers attention to an excellent spread of articles of regimental interest; with Published for The Black Watch the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo taking place in 2015 there is an article about Captain William Wharton “A soldier of the Napoleonic Wars”. With the Middle East so much in the news it is interesting to read about the 2nd Battalion’s experiences in the Mandate of Palestine in 1937-38 and to see some previously unpublished images of that era. An article entitled “Viking VC” explains how Private Thomas Dinesen (a Danish national) of the 42nd Battalion Royal Highlanders of Canada (Black Watch) won his VC in 1918. Dr Tom Renouf’s article about the battle for Mauny is very moving and there is also a new section of the magazine where we hope to show readers artefacts of interest that are held in the Black Watch of Canada’s collection. The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland seem to have been as busy as ever, fulfilling their role as the United Kingdom Contingency Battalion, as well as carrying METHOD PUBLISHING out a major training exercise, support to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, training as fire Sutherland Press House, Golspie, fighters and organising and running a Regimental Highland Games in Fort George. All of this Sutherland, Scotland KW10 6RA being achieved through yet another re-organisation to their ORBAT. The Battalion has a challenging two years ahead. In 2017 it will assume the role of lead Battlegroup of the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force; this force is designed to deter further Russian aggression in Eastern Europe. 2016 is being spent training in preparation for this role. Some may recall that in 2015, the Battalion earned glowing reports for its performance on exercise in Kenya; in June this year, the Battalion deployed once more to Kenya and earned another first class report, this time whilst carrying out an even more demanding exercise. Currently, and until the end of the year there are various exercises in the UK, Germany and Eastern Europe. The number of personnel required to line a route is dependent on the length of the route allotted to unit and the interval allowed between service personnel required. The following formula allows you to calculate the number of personnel required: Distance to be lined (paces) x 2 = Total number of personnel Interval (in paces) 2. Arms may be carried by units lining the street. 3. Colours may be carried in accordance with Chapter 13, Annex A to A-AD-200-000/AG-000, The Honours, Flags and Heritage Structure of the CF soon to become A-DH-200-000/AG-000; The Heritage Structure of the CAF. 4. Bands must not be placed at points where traffic is uncontrolled. They shall be positioned opposite the Colour party when circumstances permit. Otherwise, they should be positioned conveniently where a side street opens into the route of the procession. The leading rank shall be in line with other personnel lining the route. The bands formation may be adjusted to fit the depth of the space available. DEFINITIONS 5. Near End. The end of the unit from which the procession will approach. 6. Far End. The end of the unit farthest away from the direction of the procession’s approach. STREET LINING 7. Markers, one for each company, shall be pre-positioned by the chief warrant officer, commencing from the near end of the battalion position, one pace from the curb. 8.     1 The 42nd Royal Highlanders America’s premier band of pipes, fifes, and drums Annual Newsletter 2013 XLII Greetings from the 42nd! -This year’s newsletter will focus on the band’s recently-completed Tour of Scot- land from June 19-27. This was truly a trip of a lifetime and we hope to tell all about the lead-in to the trip and what all the band accomplished during the tour. Yours Aye, Preston Smith President Tour of Scotland For decades, while performing all around the United States, the 42nd band has dreamed of traveling to and performing in Scotland. In the years leading up to and following the release of “No Matter What the Season”, the band’s marching and musicianship had improved to the point where, in 2011 - following the sale of the Griffin House and creation of the Griffin Endowment - the men of the 42nd set a goal to finally reach Scotland in 2013. Scotland Tour Group, Edinburgh Castle Since setting our sights on Scotland, the band has redoubled its efforts in many areas: maintaining and improving uniforms, acquiring matched chanters to improve the sound of the pipes, repaint- ing drums, upgrading the Regimental Colors (thanks to fifer Josh Rose for the painting of the regimental device!), Arranging new sets of music, working on marching, drill, and deportment, and developing a fundraising plan to make it all possible - primarily centered around playing for the public as much as possible. In the year before leaving for Scotland, the band traveled from the Straits of Mackinaw to the Gulf Coast, and put on nearly 30 perfor- mances.
