Integr., Vol. 1, No. 4 (2017) 654–665 INVESTIGATION FUTURE PLANNING OF RAILWAY NETWORKS IN THE ARABS GULF COUNTRIES MOHAMMAD EMAD MOTIEYAN NAJAR & ALIA KHALFAN AL RAHBI Department of Civil Engineering, Middle East College, Muscat, Oman ABSTRACT Trans-border railroad in the Arabian Peninsula dates back to the early 20th century in Saudi Arabia. Over the recent decades due to increasing population and developing industrial zones, the demands are growing up over time. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is now embarking on one of the largest modern cross-border rail networks in the world. This is an ambitious step regarding the planning and establishment of the rail network connecting all the six GCC countries. This railway network will go through at least one city in each country to link the cities of Kuwait in Kuwait, Dammam in Saudi Arabia, Manama in Bahrain, Doha in Qatar, the cities of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates and Sohar and then Muscat in Oman in terms of cargo and passengers. The area of investigation covers different aspects of the shared Arabian countries rail routes called ‘GCC line’ and their national rail network. The aim of this article is to study the existing future plans and policies of the GCC countries shared line and domestic railway network. This article studies the national urban (light rail transportation (LRT), metro (subways) and intercity rail transportation to appraise the potential of passenger movement and commodity transportation at present and in the future. -

It does not claim to be exhaustive. It is a compilation of information on Middle East Railways, networks and projects that was collected from various public sources and the related countries as well. The pursued objective was to describe the present situation in each country in a neutral way, without formulating any opinion or assessing the described rail transport systems. This document is the first version. Readers are invited to inform UIC M.E. Regional Office of any new development or changes in the information related to their network. Mahmood Al-Wahaibi 5/10/3018 Logistics Hubs in Oman and Political Uncertainty in the Gulf Executive Summary Oman is taking remarkable steps to develop its logistics sector to be one of the main pillars of the nation’s non-oil based economy in the future. The Impact of the global economic downturn caused by low oil prices has pushed Gulf States Including Oman to look beyond the existing oil based economy. Most of the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries depend heavily on oil export which constitute over 80% in some countries (El Mahmah, A. 2016). Graph 1. Oil Share of GCC Economy Source: (El Mahmah, A. 2016) Therefore, this research utilizes an augmented from of The Gravity Model of Trade developed by Tinbergen in 1962 to better understand the past trend of Omani non-oil exports & re-exports and estimate future growth. Non-oil export & re-export as defined by The National Center for Statistics & Information (NCSI) means non-oil related products that are either made in Oman or transshipped from Omani port. Furthermore, our augmented model is designed to investigate the effect of GDP, population growth, actual distance between ports, free trade agreements (FTA), political relations, and cultural similarity from 2006 to 2016 on the value of non-oil exports & re- exports with 35 trading partners. Our augmented gravity model was able to explain 60 % of the variation in non-oil export & re- export flow across the 35 trading partners. The findings suggest strong correlations between non- oil export value and most of the mentioned variables to be able to estimate potential trade opportunities and future trade values. -

But is a relationship easily discernible? Are its dimensions opaque or transparent? Can it be easily contrasted simply by looking at it? Can it be evolved, grown, diminished, or separated? These are questions, if they are faced, they could make a simple word like ‘relationship’ look vague, abstract, and sometimes utterly confusing. In fact, discerning the intricate and delicate web of relationships is an art that requires not just looking at it from a single dimension but comprehending it through an experience in its entirety. Our client M/s Balfour Beatty Rail, UK (from now on as BBR) has chosen us as a three member team for our MBA company-based management project. Our aim is to analyse the importance of relationships in the Arab World, and analyse its critical dimensions. Szczesniak In 2016, the crude petroleum and natural gas sector continued dolomite, gypsum, kaolin, laterite, limestone, marble, quartzite, to play a significant role in Oman’s economy. The country was also the eighth-ranked producer of gypsum, accounting for 2.3% of Minerals in the National Economy the world’s gypsum production in 2016. At yearend, Oman’s In 2016, Oman’s nominal gross domestic product (GDP) crude petroleum and condensate reserves were estimated to decreased by 5.1% to $66.3 billion.1 The hydrocarbon sector be 5,400 million barrels (Mbbl); natural gas reserves were played a significant role in the country’s economy, accounting estimated to be 700 billion cubic meters. Oman produced for 68.2% of Government revenues, 57.9% of total merchandise metals, such as aluminum (primary and secondary), chromium, exports, and 27.4% of the GDP. The value added by Oman’s copper, gold, iron and steel [direct-reduced iron (DRI) and raw hydrocarbon sector decreased by 23.7% to $18.2 billion in 2016 steel], manganese, and silver. The country also produced iron as Government revenue from crude petroleum decreased by ore pellets for use by DRI plants and accounted for about 2.0% 35.4% to $9.5 billion. -
