"Green Banking" is an effort by the banks to make the industries and society A: Physical Sciences; ISSN 0369-8203 (2014)84; 43-48. Ggrow green. The concept of Green banking was started by Americans. The term “Green Banking” is new in India. It is an attempt of “Paperless banking” which is like a normal banking system, by performing all the work of a bank by considering social and environmental factors with an aim to protect the environment and conserve natural resources. Green banking is also known as ethical banking which avoids much of paper use and believes in the electronic transaction as much as possible. Green banking also focuses upon the creating awareness to the customers so that they preferred electronic transaction rather traditional banking system. It also creates awareness to business people about environmental and social responsibility enabling them to do environmental friendly business practice. Green Banking saves our forest too as thousands of trees will be saved just by using green banking practices. Customer also gets benefit from the green banking as it reduces the operating cost of the bank which reduces the EMI on the loan. Green banking is a smart thinking of the smart people. In India ICICI Bank was the first bank which started the facilities of online banking and now it has become very popular.

Development of ATM’s also promotes green banking. SBI has also gone with an operational segment of green banking. In SBI, account opening form has now started accepting online, which promotes green banking practices among customers. SBI is going to setup windmills to generate 15 MW of power in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat for its own consumption. IndusInd Bank inaugurated in Mumbai first solar powered ATM under the project campaign ‘Hum aur Hariyali’. Now a day’s ATM transaction are much more than the counter transaction as per a report of Syndicate Bank, in Dec. 2011 counter transactions accounted for Rs. 512.83 crore for the bank compared to Rs 970 crore through ATM counter. Private sector’s bank are much focusing upon the internet banking and mobile banking i.e., Green Banking. Today the success of every bank is depends upon the green banking system i.e., how much they have involve in the adaptation of the green banking.
