The 1980 meeting program will begin with the March meeting on the second Saturday of that month. Public Forum on Historic Preservation The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission will sponsor a public forum on the future of historic preservation in Prince George's County on Thursday, January 10, at the Parks and Recreation Building, 6600 Kenilworth Avenue, in Riverdale. This forum, is the first step in the process of drafting a county Historic Sites and Districts Plan by the commission. (See next article). The purpose of the forum is to receive public testimony on historic preservation in Prince George's county. Among the questions to be addressed are these: How important should historic preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, and revitalization be to Prince George's County? What should the objectives and priorities of a historic sites and districts plan be? What should be the relative roles of County government and private enterprise be in historic preservation and restoration? To what extent should the destruction of historic landmarks be regulated and their restoration or preservation subsidized? How should historic preservation relate to tourism, economic development, and revitalization? Where should the responsibility rest for making determinations about the relative merits of preserving and restoring individual sites? Members of the Historical Society, as well as others interested in historic preservation and its impact on county life, are invited to attend and, if they like, to testify.

    Deep Creek Lake NRMA Resource Guide ______________________________________ Deep Creek Lake Hydroelectric Development Recreation and Environment On March 22, 1922, preliminary surveys began in Garrett County on the waterpower possibilities of the Youghiogheny River. The Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Company had been granted the rights to construct several dams across Deep Creek and the Youghiogheny River. The surveys showed that building the Deep Creek dam was feasible and should be done first, as it would be economically self-sustaining. Since then the dam was built and has changed ownership several times. Currently, the dam and powerhouse are owned and operated by Brookfield Renewable Power. The lake was created for hydroelectric generation, yet has become a recreation Mecca for many outdoor enthusiasts. Construction History • Preliminary surveys began March 22, 1922 • Construction work began November 1, 1923 • Lake began to fill January 10, 1925 • Power plant began operation July 6, 1925 Power Plant The Power Plant is a three story, brick, concrete and steel structure containing two 12000 H.P. Allis-Chalmers Generators. The difference in elevation between the intake at the dam and the turbines is 440 feet at water surface elevation of 2,462 feet above sea level. The generators transmit 115,000 volts. The tailrace is 400 feet long, while the concrete, horseshoe-shaped tunnel is 7, 150 feet long. The plant also contains two steel penstocks with diameters of six feet and length of 685 feet, and one steel surge tank with a diameter of 35 feet and height of 53 feet. The elevation of the lake bottom at tunnel intake is 2,410.5 feet.

    Maryland Land Preservation and Recreation Plan 2014-2018 Dear Citizens: Our land is the foundation of our economic and social prosperity, rich in productive forests and farms, vital wildlife habitat, opportunities for recreation and tourism, culture and history. As our State grows and changes, it is important to continually evaluate our mission and investments for the benefit of Maryland and its citizens. As champion of public land conservation and outdoor recreation, DNR is pleased to present the Land Preservation and Recreation Plan for 2014-2018 — a comprehensive, statewide plan that will guide our efforts to conserve open space and enhance outdoor resources on State lands for the next five years.
