EDERf •Department of Botany, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045-2106; and t Department of Biological Sciences, Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois 62026-1651 The relationship between leaf anatomy, specifically the percent of leaf volume occupied by water- storage parenchyma (hydrenchyma), and the contribution of respiratory C02 during Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) was investigated in 12 epiphytic species of Tillandsia. It has been postulated that the hydrenchyma, which contributes to C02 exchange through respiration only, may be causally related to the recently observed phenomenon of C02 recycling during CAM. Among the 12 species of Tillandsia, leaves of T. usneoides and T. bergeri exhibited 0% hydrenchyma, while the hydrenchyma in the other species ranged from 2.9% to 53% of leaf cross-sectional area. Diurnal malate fluctuation and nighttime atmospheric C02 uptake were measured in at least four individuals of each species. A significant excess of diurnal malate fluctuation as compared with atmospheric C02 absorbed overnight was observed only in T. schiedeana. This species had an intermediate proportion (30%) of hydrenchyma in its leaves. Results of this study do not support the hypothesis that C02 recycling during CAM may reflect respiratory contributions of C02 from the tissue hydrenchyma. Mariposa de tamaño grande, dorsalmente con una coloración oscura con una banda naranja, ancha, localizada entre el área postmedia y marginal del ala anterior. Ala posterior con una mancha fucsia que nace desde la base hasta el área postmedia. Presenta además dos proyecciones caudales, una de estas, de mayor tamaño localizada hacia el margen distal. Longitud del ala anterior: 29 - 32 mm. Aspectos ecológicos. Es bastante común en los períodos de sequía al borde de los caminos y al interior del bosque, también se le puede encontrar en áreas aledañas a corrientes de agua. Acostumbra posarse en pequeños charcos o sobre el suelo húmedo. Su vuelo es bastante rápido y rasante o al nivel del estrato herbáceo. Es muy activa durante las horas de mayor intensidad lumínica (Álvarez 1993). La planta nutricia de sus orugas es el Ficus sp. de la familia de las Moráceas. Distribución. En Colombia esta presente en la región andina entre 1800 y 2000 m (García – Robledo et al. 2002). En la cuenca del río Coello en la localidad Cay (1714 m). Alas con proyecciones caudales, patas anteriores muy reducidas y densamente cubiertas de vellosidades por lo que solo dos pares son ambulatorias. El tórax y el abdomen son anchos, la venación que presenta la celda discal es de tipo abierto en ambas alas. Ventralmente las alas exhiben una banda blanca que parte desde la base hasta la mitad del área media y de ahí en adelante una banda de color pardo hacia la margen distal. -

We explore the influence of each gene region on the support given to each node of the most parsimonious tree derived from a combined analysis of all three genes using Partitioned Bremer Support. We also explore the influence of assuming equal weights for all characters in the combined analysis by investigating the stability of clades to different transition/transversion weighting schemes. It is apparently closely related to the widespread species, M. pseudimitans Calvert, 1898, with which it has hitherto been confused. These two species differ in shape of the cerci and epiproct, metafemoral armature, and thoracic and tibial coloration. A key to males of the genus, based largely on literature sources, is also provided. Introduction The genus Macrothemis is almost exclusively Neotropical, although a few species range northward into northern Mexico and the southwestern United States (Needham & Westfall, 1955). It comprises 39 or 40 species (Bridges, 1994, following Garrison, 1991, placed M. valida Navas, 1916, in Brechmorhoga, a plausible but so far unsubstantiated transfer), including the one described here. The latter is typical of the genus in that the inferior tooth of each tarsal claw is enlarged and its tip extends beyond that of the superior tooth. Thus the placement in Macrothemis rather than Brechmorhoga is clearly warranted, although the trigonal interspace of one forewing of the holotype is widened distally more than is usual in Macrothemis (Donnelly, 1984). The last comprehensive treatment of the genus was that of Ris (1913); although still very useful, this work is seriously outdated owing to the subsequent description of 15 species (Belle, 1983, 1987; Costa 1990, 1991; Donnelly, 1984; Gonzalez, 1992; Navas, 1916, 1918; Racenis, 1957; Ris, 1919; Santos, 1967). -

Lamentablemente, la fauna de mariposas de Guatemala es poco conocida y por lo tanto, es necesario llevar a cabo un estudio y análisis de la composición y la diversidad de las mariposas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) en Guatemala. -

Diversity, Abundance and Seasonality of Birds in a Caribbean Pine Plantation and Native Broad-Leaved Forest at Trinidad, West Indies

HAYES and ISHMAELANGELO SAMAD Summary Monoculture plantations of exotic Caribbean pine Finns caribaen have been planted extensively in many tropical countries, but little is known about the bird communities inhabiting them. From October 1995 to September 1996, we compared bird populations in a 37-ha stand of mature Caribbean pine forest (planted in 1972) with an adjacent, similar-sized stand of native broad-leaved forest at Mount Saint Benedict, Trinidad, West Indies. Ten censuses, each including 10 fixed-radius point counts (25 m radius, 10 minutes duration), were conducted simultaneously during different months of the year in each habitat. Both species richness and species diversity were significantly lower in the pine forest, but the overall abundance of individual birds did not differ between the two forests. Seasonal variation in bird populations was more pronounced in the pine forest, where fewer birds (and presumably food resources) were present during the dry season. The pine forest bird community was dominated by forest edge specialists and the native forest by forest interior specialists at both the individual and species levels. At the individual level, nectarivores, aerial foragers and understorey foragers were proportionately more common in the pine forest; insectivores and canopy foragers were more common in the native forest. At the species level, more aerial foragers occurred in the pine forest and more understorey foragers in the native forest. The diversity of bird communities in pine plantations may be promoted by increasing habitat heterogeneity.
