This project is an analysis of the unseated current situation of computer and online games’ sector in Japan, as well as the cause by which it has thus ended. I explain firstly the occidental state so I can compare it later with the most present businesses on both sides. I also commentate on the issues that appear from the no-localization of online computer games, and the ones that lead the rankings nowadays. The present conception and the state that it is found, as well as the little growth blocks that it can achieve thanks to companies that bet for innovation in this sector, are also explained together with the future that can soon be expected, especially from certain notable companies and the indie creators. I include as a comment a brief situation of the outlook in China and South Korea.

Introduction The Entertainment Software Association (“ESA”) thanks the Commission for this opportunity to provide further information about the video game industry’s products and the strong progress that our industry has made on energy efficiency.1 In the commentary below, we address the specific questions posed by the Commission in the recent webinar. Before turning to those questions, however, we first provide the Commission some context about the game industry’s strong track record on energy efficiency that informs our responses. Game consoles are constantly evolving. Unlike many other consumer electronics, which have a fairly stable feature set or well-understood range of functions, game consoles continue to add new features, functions, and enhanced entertainment experiences. Even its core function, game play, is always evolving in areas such as graphics, network capabilities, multi-player game play, and user interfaces.

The localization industry has never been affected quite the same way as many other sectors, but now that A other sectors begin to tentatively look up the economic curve towards prosperity, we may relax just a bit more also. This eighth annual resource directory and index allows industry professionals and those wanting to expand business access to language-industry companies around the globe. Following tradition, the 2010 Resource Directory (blue tabs) begins this issue, listing compa- nies providing services in a variety of specialties and formats: from language-related technol- ogy to recruitment; from locale-specifi c localization to educational resources; from interpreting to marketing. Next come the editorial pages (red tabs) on timeless localization practice. Henk Boxma enumerates the real costs of quality software translations, and Kevin Fountoukidis offers tips on people-centric company management. The Editorial Index 2009 (gold tabs) provides a helpful reference for MultiLingual issues 101- 108, by author, title, topic and so on, all arranged alphabetically. • Peter Lai [email protected] Fallout: Rebirth Through Nuclear Holocaust
Peter Lai [email protected] Fallout: Rebirth Through Nuclear Holocaust Introduction “War. War never changes,” begins Interplay’s classic PC role-playing game Fallout. The opening cinema is a stark black-and-white video that depicts the prelude to and aftermath of nuclear holocaust. The nations, bickering as always over resources, eventually fight World War III in 2077. The war is over in a mere two hours, and most of the world is devastated by nuclear weapons. The player character, however, is spared from destruction because his or her family had entered a large underground Vault designed to protect humans from the war. As the game opens, a hundred years have passed since the first bombs dropped, and when the player character leaves the Vault, he or she is plunged into a world where everyday life is highly dangerous. Small Life in Fallout often ends grimly, as seen from this screenshot. towns have sprung up and struggle to protect themselves from roaming bandits, huge mutated creatures, occasional armies, and other hazards of the wasteland. In contrast to Final Fantasy VII, the most popular console role-playing game produced that year (1997,) Fallout is a much darker game, aimed at an older audience than the Final Fantasy series. However, underlying the mature setting lies a much more openly structured game than could be found on the consoles. Fallout hearkens back to the style of classic PC role-playing games, in which the character could act in any way the player wished. This style of role-playing games (RPGs) was itself inherited from pencil & paper games and reached its height in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.
