A&B : Ciao Michael. In Italia e in Europa c'è un po' di confusione sul genere musicale che suonate. Nei negozi specializzati, i vostri dischi sono spesso collocati nel rock o il Southern o addirittura il Country Rock. So perfettamente che alle band non piace etichettare la propria musica, quindi mi pedonerai se ti pongo questa domanda: la vosta musica è ottima ma in che genere rientra?

Michael : Ciao Gianluca. La nostra musica ha sempre avuto molte influenze diverse, a causa del fatto che abbiamo avuto così tanti compositori, tutti diversi tra loro. Ogni brano è stato realizzato con un proprio specifico suono. E' questo il motivo per cui non c'è banjo su "Jackie blu" e nessuna armonia su "Chicken Train". Diciamo che ogni canzone merita un trattamento speciale.

A&B : Durante i primi anni settanta, la label A&M era alla ricerca di una band sullo stile degli Eagles. Ed infatti, voi foste scoperti dal primo produttore dgli Eagles, Glyn Johns. Cosa ricordi di quel primo periodo?

Michael : Ricordo che eravamo letteralmente sopraffatti dal fatto che Glyn Johns amasse la nostra musica, al punto da indurlo a dedicare così tanto del suo tempo per produrci e per la registrazione. E' stato un ottimo produttore e noi siamo stati molto fortunati ad aver lavorato con lui.

A&B : Pensi che le somiglianze con la musica della prima incarnazione degli Eagles siano corrette e pertinenti?

Michael : Sì, ritengo corrette queste similitudini. Noi e loro fummo figli del nostri tempo: suonavamo con enfasi gli strumenti acustici e cantavamo delle splendide armonie vocali.

A&B : In Italia, generalmente associamo gli Ozark Mountain Daredevils a band come Poco, Firefall, Pure Praire League, Cowboy, Mason Profit. È giusto secondo te?

Michael : Ci piace essere associati a queste band: tutti noi suoniamo o suonavamo una musica caratterizzata da armonie e ancora armonie.

A&B : Cosa ne pensi dell'involuzione musicale degli anni '80? Ad esempio, rimanendo negli Stati Uniti, una band come "Crosby Stills Nash & Young" ha profondamente cambiato il suo stile nel corso degli anni Ottanta: è possibile ascoltare questo declino negli album solisti "Innocent Eyes" di Nash, "Trans" di Young, "Right by You "di Stills.

Michael : Generalmente, nei primi anni, ogni artista degli anni '70 ha registrato le cose migliori. Tuttavia, dopo un po', ci si è dovuti adattare agli anni '80 e si è visto, purtroppo, che molte cose non erano all'altezza dei lavori precedenti.

A&B : Tra il 1980 e il 1997 non avete pubblicato nessun album. La band esisteva ancora?

Michael : Eravamo vivi e vegeti ma, semplicemente, non siamo mai entrati in sala di registrazioine. Abbiamo continuato a fare molti concerti, però.

A&B : Sono un collezionista di dischi quindi spero perdonerai le successive due domande: è vero che nei vostri primi tre album erano inclusi dei rarissimi flexy da 7 pollici?

Michael : Il nostro terzo disco, "The Car Over The Lake Album", conteneva certamente un 7 inch flexy. Facemmo questo per avere l'opportunita di pubblicare in ogni caso un paio di nostre canzoni più divertenti che non avevano trovato spazio nel disco. E' andata così bene, che abbiamo deciso di ripetere la cosa, ma solo per i membri del nostro fan club.

A&B : Vorrei conoscere i dettagli dei dischi "Now Hear This" e "Still Alive And Well!" registrato dal vivo al Roxy di Los Angeles nel dicembre del 1975, pubblicato dalla etichetta Lost Cabin Music nella metà degli anni Settanta (se ben ricordo).

Michael : Per quanto concerne il primo titolo, si tratta di un lotto di canzoni che abbiamo registrato e poi inserito in una cassetta autoprodotta (venduta soltanto ai concerti). Molti dei brani ivi contenuti si possono trovare su "13". Non so nulla, invece, di "Still Alive And Well!" (effettivamente, potrebbe trattarsi di un bootleg. Nda)

A&B : Qual è, secondo te, il vostro miglior album e quale il più sottovalutato?

Michael : Il migliore è certamente "It'll Shine When it Shines" mentre "Don't Look Down" è certamente quello meno considerato, nonostante sia molto valido.

A&B : Parlami dell'attuale incarnazione della band.

Michael : L'attuale line-up comprende tre membri originali - John Dillon, Steve Cash ed io - e un nutrito gruppo di nuovi amici.

A&B : Nel mese di aprile/maggio 1976, gli Ozark si imbarcarono in un tour europeo. Pensi di tornare in Europa, prima o poi? Pensi che potrete giungere in Italia, nel prossimo futuro, paese ove non avete mai suonato? Le nostre dita sono incrociate.

Michael : Ci piace venire in Europa: il pubblico è istruito e ricettivo. Tuttavia, è vero che non abbiamo mai suonato in Italia: verremmo volentieri in Italia e in Europa, se un promotore dovesse chiamarci, naturalmente.

A&B : Progetti attuali? Nuovi dischi?

A&B : Ciao Michael. Well, in Italy and in Europe there is a little bit of confusion about the genre you play. We can find your records under Rock, Southern or Country Rock. I perfectly know that all the bands don't like categorize their music but I have to ask the following: you play a very good music but what kind of genre is it?

Michael : Ciao Gianluca. Our music has always held many different genres, due to the fact that we had so many different writers with different influences. Each song was crafted to its individual sound. That's why there are no banjos on Jackie Blue and no smooth harmonies on Chicken Train. Each song deserves special treatment.

A&B : During the early seventies, major A&M was looking for a band on the style of Eagles. And in fact, you was "discovered" by Eagles' first producer, Glyn Johns. What do you remember about this first period?

Michael : I remember being overwhelmed by the fact that Glyn Johns liked our music enough to dedicate so much of his time to recording it. He is a very good producer and I/we feel very lucky to have worked with him.

A&B : Do you think that the similarities with the music of (the first incarnation of) Eagles are correct, are pertinents or relevants?

Michael : Yes, The similarities are correct. We/they were products of our times, with emphasis on acoustic instruments and vocal harmonies.

A&B : In Italy we generally associate Ozark Mountain Daredevils with bands like Poco, Firefall, Pure Praire League, Cowboy, Mason Profit. Is it correct in your opinI don't know anything about.ion? If not, where and what is the difference?

Michael : Once again, we like being associated with these bands, as we all liked harmonies, harmonies, harmonies.

Michael : On your early albums, you are able to record your best songs. After a while (the 80's), you have to write new ones, many that don't hold up to your earlier work.

A&B : In the range between 1980 and 1997 you never released any album. The band was alive and well or was split?

Michael : We were alive and well, but just didn't record. We continued to play gigs, though.

A&B : I'm a record collector so I hope you forgive the following two questions: are your first three records edited with a rare flexy 7 inch inside each one?

Michael : Album 3 ("Car Over the Lake Album") contained the floppy 7". We did this to release a couple of our funnier songs. It went over so well, we put out a second 7", but only to members of our fan club.

A&B : I would like to know informations about "Now Hear This" (a self-produced cassette sold by you only at concerts) and the live record "Still Alive And Well!" recorded live in Los Angeles (at the Roxy, Dec 1975) edited by label Lost Cabin Music during the middle seventies (if I well remember).

Michael : "Now Hear This" was a batch of songs we recorded and pressed up an independent cassette. Many of these songs can be found on '13'. I don't know anything about "Still Alive And Well!".

A&B : Which is, in your opinion, your best album?

Michael : "It'll Shine When it Shines"

A&B : Which is the most underrated?

A&B : Tell me about the current line-up: you have three of the historical members plus many new musicians....

Michael : The current line-up contains three original members - John Dillon, Steve Cash and myself - surrounded by a band of friends.

A&B : In April/May 1976, you embarked on a tour in Europe. Do you think you will return in Europe, soon or later? You never played in Italy. Do you think It will be possible in the next future? Our fingers are crossed.

Michael : We love coming to Europe: the audiences are educated and receptive. Though we never played in Italy: We would play in Italy/Europe if a promoter would call, of course.

A&B : Current projects? New releases?
