The Sun's massive amount of gravity keeps the solar system together. Tracking the movements of the Earth and Moon can be part of a stargazing hobby, or part of scientific research into the way the solar system works. It takes the Earth 24 hours to rotate on its axis and one year to revolve around the Patterns of the Earth. The Moon revolves around the Earth in an average of The Sun is an average-sized star, made of hot gas fueled by nuclear reactions. The Sun is the closest star to the Earth, and is one of over billion in the Milky Way galaxy. A galaxy is a massive collection of stars, planets and other materials that is bound together by gravity. The Sun moves in a circular orbit around the center of the Milky Way galaxy, traveling at about km per second miles per second. Even at that high speed, it takes the Sun million years to complete one revolution of the galactic center. The Earth is the third planet from the sun, orbiting it at a distance of about million km 93 million Patterns of the Earth. The Earth is constantly spinning like a top around its axis, and it takes Patterns of the Earth day for it to complete a spin. This spinning is Patterns of the Earth causes the Earth's day and night cycle. The Earth is travels around the sun in an oval-shaped orbit. It takes one year to complete a full revolution. Since the orbit is not a perfect circle, the Earth is at times slightly closer top or farther from the sun. The Earth's orbit, combined with the tilt of the Earth's axis, causes the seasons. The moon is Earth's natural satellite, meaning it revolves around the Earth in the same way the Earth travels around the sun. The moon is aboutkmmiles from the Earth and it takes about 27 days to make one trip around the Earth. The moon spins around on its own axis in the same amount of time it takes to make one revolution of the Earth. This is why the same side of the moon always faces the Earth. The moon's trip around the Earth impacts Earth's tides and causes eclipses when certain alignments of Patterns of the Earth Earth, sun and moon occur. Mercury takes 88 Earth days to travel around the Sun and Venus takes days. Those are the only planets with shorter years than Earth. Mars takes Earth days to travel around the Sun, Jupiter takes nearly 12 years, Saturn takes nearly 30 years, Uranus takes about 84 years and Neptune takes more than years. Alane Michaelson began writing professionally in About the Author. Copyright Leaf Group Ltd. Sun, Moon & Stars: Patterns of Apparent Motion | Legends of Learning The wind is the result of an interaction between the sun's energy and the Earth. But our planet is not uniform - land and water are distributed unevenly. The unequal heating of the surface of the planet, Patterns of the Earth. Each one of them rules roughly 30 degrees of Patterns of the Earth, like wind belts around the Earth. Because it receives the sun's most direct rays, the Equator has the globe's warmest temperatures. On the opposite ends, the two Poles receive the most disperse radiation, i. What happens is that hot air in the Equator rises and moves toward the Poles, while the cooler air at the Poles sinks and travels toward the Equator creating a continuing wind system. As Earth rotates from west to east and the Coriolis Effect kicks in, the winds on the Northern Hemisphere curve to the right, and the winds on the Southern Hemisphere curve to the left. Generally, prevailing wind patterns around the world are westerly - going from west to east - so, for example, in the United States, it's not unusual for California weather to be headed in a few days to New York. So, how do these huge wind belts form and move? Let's observe the formation of wind patterns in detail. The wind typically moves from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. So, the first air current moves from 90 degrees North Pole and South Pole and heats up quickly at 60 degrees northern Patterns of the Earth southern hemispheres - the air expands, rises, and cycles back in a counterclockwise loop. These are the so-called Polar Easterlies. An identical process occurs between the Equator line 0 degrees and 30 degrees northern and southern hemispheres. These are the so-called Trade Winds. But because between 30 degrees and 60 degrees the air gets trapped, a new convection current begins to take shape, this time in clockwise mode. These are the so-called Prevailing Westerlies. The wind doesn't go across the equator very often. It's almost like a no-wind zone. Sailors call it the "doldrums. But sailing problems also take place in the area between the Prevailing Westerlies and the Trade Winds zone, about 30 degrees north. In the past, sailors would get weight out off caravels by dumping horses overboard, to try to travel faster. That is why 30th parallel north ended up being called the Horse Latitude. Last but not least, the collision between the Polar Easterlies high- pressure air and the Prevailing Westerlies lower pressure air forms a fast, powerful wind that moves from the west to the east - the Jet Stream. The Jet Stream moves in a swirl pattern and changes on a Patterns of the Earth basis. It is responsible for the transportation of weather systems. All six wind patterns travel north in the northern summer, and south in the northern winter. However, Patterns of the Earth there are higher temperature differences and more landmass in the northern hemisphere, the regions located north of the Equator observe more extreme wind currents and weather events than the southern hemisphere. Dec 15, Amanda rated it really liked it Shelves: nonfictionstemy This book is basically all pictures. There are lots of cool views of the earth up close and from a distance in the air. It would make a great coffee table book or end table because the book is kind of small. I enjoyed looking through the pictures. There are lots of photos from Iceland, Alaska and Namibia and other places too! In fact there are maps in the Patterns of the Earth that mark where each photo was taken. Jan 05, Alex rated it really liked it Shelves: visualnon-fictionkid-friendly. Just bought this gorgeous little book about nature at different scales. The photos are stunning-- many are so abstracted you can't read them even though you know what you're looking at. I would have liked just a bit more scientific meat to the text, but that's not the point Patterns of the Earth the book, I suppose. I know I'll be spending more time pondering the details. • The Coordinate System: Latitude and Longitude
The Coordinate System: 2 Latitude and Longitude Key Words: latitude, equator, longitude, meridians, prime meridian, coordinate system, coordinates, absolute location, hemispheres On many maps and globes, you can see crisscrossing lines with numbers by them. These lines and numbers form a grid system that allows us to describe the exact location of any place on Earth. The lines running east to west around the Earth are lines of latitude, also called parallels (because parallel lines do not touch each other). These lines use units of measure called degrees to measure the distance north or south of the equator, which is 0° latitude. (The symbol ° stands for degrees.) The 30th parallel north is the same as 30° N (north) latitude. Look at the globe on the right. Locate the equator at 0 degrees (0°). On this globe, the next line of latitude south of the equator is 15° S (south). Still going south, the next line of latitude is 30° S, then 45° S, and so on. The farthest south you can go is the South Pole, at latitude 90° S. The farthest north you can go is the North Pole, at latitude 90° N. On a map or a globe the lines running north to south, from pole to pole are lines of longitude, also called meridians. Lines of longitude measure the distance east or west of the prime meridian, which is 0° longitude. Look at the globe on the left. Find the prime meridian. On this globe, the first line of longitude east of the prime meridian is 15° E (east).

  • List of International Boundary Lines | GK Notes in PDF
List of International Boundary Lines | GK Notes in PDF Radcliffe Line Radcliffe Line was drawn by Sir Radcliffe. It marked the boundary between India and Pakistan. The Radcliffe Line was officially announced on August 17, 1947, a few days after the independence of India and Pakistan. The newly demarcated borders resulted into one of the biggest human migrations in modern history, with roughly 14 million people displaced. More than one million people were killed. The Maginot Line The Maginot Line named after the French Minister of War André Maginot, was a line of concrete fortifications, obstacles, and weapon installations built by France in the 1930s to deter invasion by Germany. The Mannerheim Line The Mannerheim Line was a defensive fortification line on the Karelian Isthmus built by Finland against the Soviet Union. The line was constructed in two phases: 1920–1924 and 1932–1939. By November 1939, when the Winter War began, the line was by no means complete The Medicine Line The medicine line, a hundred-mile stretch of the U.S. Canadian border at the top of Blaine County, Montana, epitomizes borderlessness . Natives called the border between Canada and the United States the Medicine Line, because during the 19th century Indian wars American troops respected it as if by magic. A century later, the medicine line deserves our respect for many different reasons: the history of peaceful coexistence it represents, and the model it offers for the future. The Hindenburg Line The Hindenburg Line is the boundary dividing Germany and Poland. The Hindenburg Line was a German defensive position of World War I, built during the winter of 1916–1917 on the Western Front, from Arras to Laffaux, near Soissons on the Aisne.
