SEMPATRECMHB 2E2R 21012 02020 ISSVUOEL 2051 1 OTI GAZETTE The official newsletter of OTI RACING and Management Sparks flew earlier this week in Australia when Racing Victoria IN THIS WEEK'S announced that it would propose a nationwide reduction in the use of EDITION the whip. Rather than this important topic taking the limelight, the discussion quickly and unfortunately moved to whether Racing Victoria had acted appropriately in making such an announcement. OTI NEWS Upcoming OTI Runners OTI Fun and Games In the eyes on the general public, the use of the whip in racing is A CONVERSATION intrinsically linked to horse welfare. In this age, despite whatever WITH argument racing may use to justify its use, most people, especially GLEN BOSS children, see it as unacceptable that a horse is whipped to make it go faster. MICHAEL LYNCH Despite the backlash against Racing Victoria, it is comforting for the ON FIELD SIZES future of the industry to see that it has taken a position on the issue. Hopefully a united stand by all the peak bodies on the reduction and OTI TO RACE ultimately elimination of the whip will do wonders for racing’s image. It MONTABOT will support our welfare claims and equally, importantly lay the foundation for more young people to want to enter the sport. SOMETHING TO The price of inaction on the issue is high. In losing the support of the WATCH, LISTEN OR public, we encourage politicians to make the decision for us. It’s an easy READ policy to sell for a major party to attract votes.

The title of NZ Bloodstock Filly of the Year is on the line for O’Reilly filly Miss Selby this Saturday, when she sets out in the Gr.1 Wellfield Stud New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham. The last start winner of the Gr.3 Lowland Stakes has been a model of consistency, placing in all six of her career starts. As a consequence, the John Bary-trained galloper has netted 12 points in the prestigious NZB-sponsored Filly series, with victory on Saturday securing a vital 12 points which would see her overtake Costa Viva (20.5 pts), Hera (O’Reilly) and Bounding (13 pts). Whilst these three horses are notable omissions on Saturday, Miss Selby is tipped to face her stiffest opposition in the form of the last start Gr.3 Sunline Vase winner Rock Diva and from no less than four other WS-sired chances (see picture below).
