ROYAL MO b. 2014 by Uncle Mo – Royal Irish Lass by Saint Ballado

“A graded stakes winner who missed by just a length in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), Royal Mo is among the leading sons of Champion Two-Year-Old and sire sensation, Uncle Mo. His dam, a multiple stakes producer is by outstanding sire Saint Ballado out of Irish Linnet, a multiple graded stakes winning turf performer who earned over $1,000,000. From the Caro branch of the Grey Sovereign line, Royal Mo offers an exciting outcross for leading South African sire lines.”

Uncle Mo has already sired ChampionTwo-Year-Old and Kentucky Derby (gr. I) victor, Nyquist, and graded stakes winner Auntie Joy, out of mares by , a son of . He also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Storm Cat himself, stakes winners out of mares by the brothers Giant’s Causeway (whose outstanding son, Shamardal, shuttled to Australia) and Freud – who both give inbreeding to Saint Ballado and his sister, Champion Glorious Song – and a stakes winner out of a mare by Scat Daddy (by Johannesburg, a son of Hennessy). The Storm Cat line can also be brought in through Var, Mogok (giving a well- placed inbreeding), Tiger Ridge, Black Minnaloushe, Portrush and Aristis. Van Nistelrooy, who stood in New Zealand would give a well-placed Halo double, and Tale of the Cat is another Storm Cat son who shuttled.

Uncle Mo has Australian grade two winner Man From Uncle out of a mare by Danehill Dancer (by Danehill), and his sire, Indian Charlie, has outperformed opportunity with mares from the line of Danehill’s sire, . As sources of Danehill we can consider Albert Hall, Fanatic Dane, Indian Danehill, Newton, Overlord (a relative to Storm Cat), Requiem, Restructure, Solskjaer, Toreador, Stronghold and Way West. Among Australian sources are Fastnet Rock, Flying Spur, Redoute’s Choice, Rock of Gibraltar, Holy Roman Emperor, Commands and the previously mentioned Danehill Dancer (sire of Lizard Island, Mastercraftsman and Choisir).

Mares by Danzig son, Orpen, a close relative to Danehill, might be interesting, giving the brothers Saint Ballado and Devil’s Bag, and other sources of Danzig frequently in South Africa include National Assembly, National Emblem, Announce, Rebel King, Qui Danzig, Joshua Dancer, Modern Day, Alami, Noble Ambition, Shoe Danzig, Lustra, Allied Flag, Freedom Land and Lizard Island (by Lure, and from the family of Storm Cat). On the international front we could also look for Danzig through Green Desert – a relative to the dam of Arch, the broodmare mare sire of Uncle Mo – sire of Cape Cross, Oasis Dream (sire of Querari) and Invincible Spirit (sire of I Am Invincible in Australia), as well War Front (who

might work well here), Belong to Me, Boundary, Exchange Rate, Hard Spun, Langfuhr and War Chant.

Out of mares from the Deputy Minister branch of , Uncle Mo already has two stakes winners, which suggests trying daughters of Go Deputy.

Trying Northern Dancer through the Rakeen line also appeals, as Rakeen is out of Champion Glorious Song, a sister to Saint Ballado, the broodmare sire of Royal Mo. He is available through Jet Master and Royal Airforce.

It could be worth cautiously considering mares from the Sadler’s Wells line. Uncle Mo does have two stakes horses from only six starters out of Sadler’s Wells line mares, and grade one winner Sligo Bay was by Sadler’s Wells out of a sister to Saint Ballado, the broodmare sire of Royal Mo. In Excess, the grandsire of Uncle Mo, sired classic winner Musical Chimes out of a Sadler’s Wells mare. Sources of Sadler’s Wells might include Fort Wood (sire of Dynasty, Horse Chestnut, Elusive Heart and Whistling Wood), Casey Tibbs, Dolpour, Braashee and Doowaley. Looking further afield, we can note such as (sire of Teofilo and New Approach), Carnegie, , Barathea and Singspiel (who is out of Glorious Song, a sister to Saint Ballado, the broodmare sire of Royal Mo, and is sire of Lateral).

Uncle Mo has enjoyed success with a wide variety of Mr. Prospector line mares. He has grade one winner Dream Tree out of a mare by Afleet Alex, a son of Northern Afleet. Northern Afleet is a Mr. Prospector/Nureyev cross, like Kingmambo, and Uncle Mo also has stakes winner Mo Maverick out of a mare by Lemon Drop Kid, a son of Kingmambo, a strain that can be brought in through Mambo in Seattle (a three-quarters brother to Lemon Drop Kid), Parade Leader (from the immediate family of Royal Mo’s broodmare sire, Saint Ballado) and Ashaawes. Kingmambo sons Dubai Destination and King’s Best stood in Australia. In addition, Muhtafal is a three-quarters brother to Afleet, the sire of Northern Afleet.

Uncle Mo has done very well with the Gone West line, including grade one winner Gomo and graded winner Lost Raven out of mares by Elusive Quality, and grade two winner Laoban out of a mare by Speightstown. There are numerous Gone West line stallions in South Africa that could work well here, including Western Winter (sire of What a Winter, Warm White Night and Argonaut), West Test, Sail From Seattle, Count Dubois, Dupont, Modus Vivendi and Visionaire.

From other branches of Mr. Prospector Uncle Mo is sire of graded winner Mo’ Green out of a mare by Two Punch and a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s son Smoke Glacken), as well as stakes winners out of mares by Fusaichi Pegasus and Seeking the Gold (sire of Windrush and Lecture), and grandsire of Dubawi, who shuttled to Australia.

Among the other South African branches of Mr. Prospectror that could work here are Goldkeeper (a half-brother to Storm Cat), Kahal (who has Halo and Green Desert, and looks interesting here), Twice Over and Strike Smartly.

One branch of Mr. Prospector that has not been seen frequently in South Africa, but is very good with Uncle Mo is Fappiano. Uncle Mo has 15 stakes horses, 8 stakes winners, and 6 graded stakes winners from 51 starters with Fappiano in the pedigree. He has graded stakes winners out of mares by Unbridled and his sons Empire Maker (sire of Pioneerof the Nile and Bodemeister) and Untuttable, and he also has a graded stakes winner out of mare by Rubiano. Uncle Mo also has a grade two placed horse out of a mare by Quiet American (grandsire of Midnight Lute). Unbridled is also sire of Broken Vow, and Grindstone (sire of Birdstone) and Unbridled’s Song (sire of Songandaprayer, Rockport Harbor, First Defence, Midshipman, Old Fashioned, Half Ours, Zensational, Dunkirk and Even The Score).

Out of mares by stallions from the Seattle Slew line, Uncle Mo has grade one winner Mo Town and grade two winner Mopotism out of mares by A.P. Indy son Bernardini (who shuttled to Australia, and is out of a mare by Quiet American), and stakes winners out of mares by Mineshaft and Malibu Moon. Pulpit (sire of Tapit, Sky Mesa and Stroll), Congrats (who stood in Australia) and Flatter are all bred on the same cross as Mineshaft and Malibu Moon. In South Africa A.P. Indy can be brought in through Camden Park (sire of Jay Peg), Judpot and Marchfield.

Uncle Mo has a stakes winner out of a mare by Dynaformer, a son of Roberto, and his sire, Indian Charlie has a stakes winner out of a mare by the same horse. In South Africa, Roberto can be brought in through Al Mufti (sire of Captain Al, Victory Moon and Cataloochee) or Shuailaan. The Japanese stallion, (by Silver Hawk, a son of Roberto), from the same sire line, , and same female line as Saint Ballado appears interesting. Grass Wonder son, Screen Hero, would also be interesting, giving inbreeding to Halo.

There is an Uncle Mo stakes winner out of a mare by Orientate (who stood in New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere, as well the U.S.), and a stakes winner by Indian Charlie out of a mare by that horse’s sire, Mt. Livermore, also sire of Housebuster (another who shuttled to New Zealand) and Peaks and Valleys. Mt. Livermore is by Blushing Groom, who would be interesting through Rahy, whose dam Champion Glorious Song is a sister to Saint Ballado,

the broodmare sire of Royal Mo, and he might be found through or Fantastic Light. Royal Mo is also half-brother to stakes winner Tara From The Cape, who is by Leroidesanimaux, who is from the Candy Stripes branch of Blushing Groom.

From only five starters out of Relaunch line mares Uncle Mo is sire of stakes winners My Aunt Mo out of a mare by and Forevamo out of a mare by Slew Gin Fizz.

Uncle Mo has grade two winner Mokat out of a mare by Premiership, a son of Exclusive Native, and there is an Indian Charlie stakes winner out of a mare by Exclusive Native son, Affirmed. Affirmed’s son, Argosy, would be a positive influence and would give linebreeding to the dam of Argosy and his half-brother, Seattle Slew.

ROYAL MO – SUMMARY

As a two-year-old Royal Mo was a progressive type. After placing at six and seven furlongs on his first two starts, he broke his maiden on his third and final start of the year, leading throughout over a mile to win from subsequent stakes winner, Sonneteer.

First time out at three, he again lead throughout, to take the 8½ furlong Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. III) – a Kentucky Derby (gr. I) trial – by 3½ lengths from subsequent multiple graded stakes winner Irap. In the nine furlong Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), Royal Mo, drawn widest of all, engaged the subsequent Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. I) winner, Battle of Midway through fast early fractions, and battled courageously to the wire, to hold third, beaten a ½ length and the same by the multiple grade one winner Gormley and Battle of Midway. The Trakus Chart reveals that Royal Mo ran 31 feet further than Gormley, and 42 feet further than Battle of Midway. Pointed towards the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), the second leg of the Triple Crown, Royal Mo suffered a career ending injury in what have been his final work prior to that race.

Royal Mo is a quintessential model of the modern North American classic type dirt runner, as was his sire. That is a good-sized horse with a long-rhythmic stride; a strong, near- boundless cardio; and the either the ability to very efficiently use lactate as fuel, or having a high lactate tolerance. These horses are momentum horses that do their best work on, or near the lead, but are less suited to trying to quicken off a slower pace. We will note that despite his ability on dirt, Uncle Mo (whose broodmare sire, Arch, was an effective turf sire, including South African Champion Overarching), has already enjoyed success with runners on turf, getting seven stakes winners, five group or graded, and one grade one. Royal Mo’s dam has also produced turf stakes winner Tara From The Cape, and is by Saint Ballado, who has a turf pedigree and is a brother to the dams of notable turf runners such Singspiel, Sligo Bay and Rahy, and very successful South African sire, Rakeen. Royal Mo’s granddam Irish Linnet was a multiple graded stakes winning turf mare, so he does have turf credentials close up on both sides of the pedigree.

Experience with horses of the Uncle Mo/Royal Mo type as shuttle stallions to regions that predominantly race on turf, suggests that they are better utilized as sires of milers and middle-distance runners, than sprinters. They don’t tend to get early precocious two-year- olds, but can often get high-class later season juveniles. It will probably pay too avoid mating Royal Mo with too many pure sprint type mares, as they are likely to be more of an extreme physical and physiological contrast to Royal Mo.

Royal Mo’s pedigree is an outcross at five generations, and with the exception of the background of his broodmare sire Saint Ballado – Saint Ballado’s sire, Halo; Saint Ballado’s siblings Devil’s Bag and Glorious Song; and the immediate family – there are relatively few obvious inbreeding targets.

Of strains that are frequently found in South Africa, the Storm Cat line stands out. Uncle Mo has already sired ChampionTwo-Year-Old and Kentucky Derby (gr. I) victor, Nyquist, and graded stakes winner Auntie Joy out of mares by Forestry, a son of Storm Cat. The Storm Cat line can also be brought in through Var, Mogok (giving a well-placed Halo inbreeding), Tiger Ridge, Black Minnaloushe, Portrush and Aristis. Van Nistelrooy, who stood in New Zealand would give a well-placed Halo double.

Indian Charlie line stallions in general have outperformed opportunity with Danzig line mares. This includes an Australian stakes winner out of a mare by Uncle Mo out of a mare by Danehill Dancer (by Danehill). It does seem that Halo (sire line of the dam of Royal Mo), who is a grandson of Almahmoud, combines quite well with Danehill (inbred to Almahmoud’s daughter, ), and there are around 175 stallions with Halo in the sire, and Danehill in the dam. Among Danehill sons that have stood in South Africa we the best possibilities would include Albert Hall (who is a reverse cross to Arch, the broodmare sire of Uncle Mo), Overlord (a relative to Storm Cat) and Stronghold (whose dam looks a particularly good fit with Royal Mo).

Among Australian sources are Fastnet Rock (whose broodmare sire, Royal Academy, is a close relative to Storm Cat, who works well with Uncle Mo), Flying Spur, Redoute’s Choice, Rock of Gibraltar, Holy Roman Emperor and the previously mentioned Danehill Dancer (who looks interesting through Mastercraftsman, another shuttle sire).

Among other sons of Danzig, Orpen, a close relative to Danehill, would be interesting, giving the brothers Saint Ballado and Devil’s Bag. There are numerous other sources of Danzig to be found in South Africa including Announce and Modern Day (reverse crosses to Arch, the broodmare sire of Uncle Mo), Alami (who doubles Seattle Slew), Lustra, Allied Flag, Lizard Island (by Lure, and from the family of Storm Cat).

On the international front particularly interesting sources of Danzig include Green Desert – a relative to the dam of Arch, the broodmare mare sire of Uncle Mo – sire of Cape Cross, Oasis

Dream (sire of Querari) and Invincible Spirit (sire of I Am Invincible in Australia), as well War Front (who might work well here bringing in Fappiano, who excellent with Uncle Mo), Belong to Me (who shuttled to Australia, and who is out of a three-quarters sister to Premiership, the broodmare sire of Uncle Mo grade two winner Mokat), War Chant (who shuttled to Australia, and who Is a reverse cross to Arch, the broodmare sire of Uncle Mo) and Hard Spun (who also shuttled to Australia and who has a similar background to Arch).

Out of mares from the Deputy Minister branch of Northern Dancer, Uncle Mo already has two stakes winners, which suggests trying daughters of Go Deputy.

Trying Northern Dancer through the Rakeen line also appeals as Rakeen is out of Champion Glorious Song, a sister to Saint Ballado, the broodmare sire of Royal Mo.

In addition to Sligo Bay, Singspiel (who is out of Glorious Song, a sister to Saint Ballado, the broodmare sire of Royal Mo) would be interesting he is sire of Lateral).

Looking at the Mr. Prospector line, Uncle Mo has rapidly established an affinity with mares from the Gone West line, including grade one winner Gomo and graded winner Lost Raven out of mares by Elusive Quality (sire of Elusive City ,who was a shuttler to New Zealand, Quality Road and Smarty Jones,) grade two winner Laoban out of a mare by Speightstown. There are numerous Gone West line stallions in South Africa that could work well here, including Western Winter (sire of What a Winter, Warm White Night and Argonaut), West Quest, Sail From Seattle, Count Dubois, Dupont, Modus Vivendi and Visionaire.

Uncle Mo is sire of graded winner Mo’ Green out of a mare by Two Punch and a stakes winner out of a mare by his son Smoke Glacken (who looks appealing here), and also has stakes winners out of mares by Fusaichi Pegasus (whose dam is a sister to Pine Bluff, the broodmare sire of an Indian Charlie stakes winner) and Seeking the Gold (sire of Windrush and Lecture), and grandsire of Dubawi, who shuttled to Australia. Uncle Mo has a stakes winner out of a mare by Dynaformer, a son of Roberto, and his sire, Indian Charlie has a stakes winner out of a mare by the same horse.
