  • A Street Named Bi Pendo,How to Write About
A Street Named Bi Pendo By Carey Baraka “Memory is short-lived/And more important instead/That streets are well-laid/Flowing and uncongested.” — Jonathan Kariara, Naming Streets in Nairobi The main road that runs through Kisumu is called Jomo Kenyatta Highway. Named after the country’s first president, the road divides the town in a North-South axis that runs from Patel Flats (where it stops being Kakamega Road) to the State Lodge in Milimani. In fact, one might argue that it is the spine of the city, in the sense of it being the central nervous system and the other roads feeding off it. In other words, cut off this road from either end (at Kondele or at the intersection with Busia Road) and you have killed Kisumu. During the 2017 electoral period, Jomo Kenyatta Highway was the epicentre of several violent clashes between opposition supporters and police officers. A general election had been held on 8 August and the main candidates in the presidential election were the incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta of the Jubilee Party, and Raila Odinga of the NASA coalition. On 9 August, as tallying was ongoing, Odinga announced that the elections database had been hacked and the results were being manipulated in favour of his opponent, and that the hacker had used the credentials of Chris Msando, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ICT manager who had been murdered less than two weeks to the election. Odinga said, “What the IEBC has posted is a complete fraud . to give Uhuru Kenyatta votes that were not cast .

WThe 24-year-old appears almost certain to make his return to Test cricket at the home of cricket — where he and two teammates were found guilty of arranging no-balls to order as part of an elabo- rate betting scam devised by a tabloid journalist six years ago. The trio served jail sentences over the aff air in what was per- haps the biggest scandal to hit the sport. England’s captain Alastair Cook has already stated Amir can expect “a reaction” from English spectators while former English cricketers Kevin Pietersen and spinner Graeme Swann have joined the ranks of those calling for a life ban for all fi xers. Back home in Pakistan, however, ex-players and most fans have come around to forgiving the left-arm pacer, citing his youth at the time of his crime and early admission — though some still have reservations about what example his return sets to would-be fi xers.

  • Cheetahs Want to Repay the Hospitality
“Ons het nou klaar die twee monsterspanne, Munster en Ulster, in die Pro 14 gespeel en ek A few of the players that we will be seeing in action during the Guinness Pro14: (L-R) Gethin Jenkins (Cardiff Blues), Tiernan O’Halloran (Connacht), dink van hier kan ons moontlik die lig begin CJ Stander (Munster), Dan Lydiate (Ospreys), Ryan Wilson (Glasgow Warriors), Tommaso Castello (Zebre) and Niell Jordaan (Toyota Cheetahs) PHOTO: BILLY STICKLAND sien.

Binyavanga Wainaina: The Writer Who Democratised Kenya’s Literary Space By Rasna Warah “Some birds should never be caged, their feathers are too bright. But when one such is finally set free, something inside of you sings that knows it was wrong to cage it in the first place.” – Red in Shawshank Redemption I first met Binyavanga Wainana in 2002 – an election year in Kenya when a hopeful country was looking forward to removing an authoritarian regime and ushering in a brave new world. He had just returned from South Africa and was scouting around for ideas for a literary journal that he hoped to establish to revive the dying (if not dead) literary scene in Kenya. It was during these heady days—when it seemed that anything was possible – that Binya, as he was fondly called, came back home like a gust of fresh air that sweeps through a damp, mouldy room and changes the atmosphere. His enthusiasm was infectious. He could mesmerise an audience so much so that many aspiring writers, including myself, who never imagined having a literary career, began writing their own stories, in their own voices, with no apologies. With the launch of his brainchild, the literary journal Kwani?, in 2003, he unveiled talented and previously closeted writers who had been silenced not just by a government afraid of creatives, but by a stodgy old school literary fraternity that saw no value or merit in the writings of those they deemed to be too unschooled or undisciplined. As the blogger and academic Wandia Njoya stated in a tweet shortly after his death, Binyavanga “liberated our art from the literature police in Kenyan universities”.

“You've got to give it to World Rugby, they've made a right mess with this World Test League. So many questions still unanswered – not just who is in and out – but what about travel, fatigue, watering down test rugby, etc.” - Brenden Nel Volume 19, Number 7 07 March 2019 Register to receive your own free weekly newsletter at www.leopardnewsletters.co.za Yesterday’s Heros are Today’s Also-Rans A year ago, the Blitzbokke were on top of the world after round five of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series – literally. Sitting atop the standings 10 points clear of second-placed New Zealand and 13 points ahead of eventual runners-up, Fiji. What a difference a year makes. This year they’re languishing in fifth on the table a full 31 points behind the leaders, USA. At the halfway mark, they already have virtually zero chance of winning the title for a third consecutive year. That together with untimely injuries to key playmakers Branco du Preez and Justin Geduld as So how did they fall so fast and so hard? It’s also Rugby: Tim Agaba, Ruhan Nel, Sikhumbuzo Notshe, instructive to hear what Dylan Sage has to say about Dylan Sage, Seabelo Senatla, Kwagga Smith and it in an interview with Brenden Nel. Rosco Specman were all key members of last year’s winning squad of 12. This year, all seven are trying But did it really have to be this way? Shouldn’t to make their way in Super Rugby.
