CLASSROOM COUNTRY PROFILES Hungary (Magyarország) The name “Hungary” is adapted from Hungaria, the Medieval Latin term derived by writers from the name of the people (H) ungari or ungri. Hungarians call their country Magyarország, derived from Magyars which likely refers to the most promi- nent Hungarian tribe known as the “Megyer “. King Stephen I (997-1038), defeated various tribes, implementing Christiani- ty, and ultimately founding the Hungarian state. After WWII, Hungary fell into the Soviet sphere. In 1956, Hungarians tried to put an end to Soviet control. Hungarian Prehistory Series The Hungarians moved to their later homeland, the Carpathian basin at the end of the ninth century. Prior to this period they lived in the western part of the southern Russian steppe as vassals of the Khazar Kaghanate. The ethnic envi- ronment of the Kaghanate had a great impact on the ethnogenesis of the Hun- garians as testified by the numerous Turkic and Iranian loan words as well as the art, the military and the political structure of the Hungarians in the period of the conquest. Therefore, from the point of view of Hungarian prehistory, it is crucial to be familiar with the history of the nomadic peoples, that is, with the "oriental background." The Hungarian Prehistory Series, launched in 1990, aimed to pub- lish source editions, collected papers and monographs in connection with the history of the Eurasian steppe. It includes historical, linguistical and archaeologi- cal studies. The Department of Medieval World History (University of Szeged) has played an active role in the publication of the series since 1994. Princes and dignitaries in the ninth-tenth-century Magyar tribal federation SÁNDOR LÁSZLÓ TÓTH This study analyzes the leadership of the Hungarians in the age of their conquest, i.e. their conquest and settlement in the mid-Danubian basin (or Carpathian ba- sin) in the ninth-tenth centuries. It deals with the titles and functions of the princes and dignitaries, the structure of leadership and the persons, who held these ranks. The Hungarians, who called themselves Magyars (or Seven Magyars - 'Hetii- mogyer') appearing in written sources under different names (Turks, Ungri, Huns, Savartoi Asfaloi etc.) lived from the 830s north of the Black Sea, between the Da- nube and Don rivers. Their huge dwelling places were called Levedia and Etel- kóz by Byzantine Emperor Constantine Vll (945-959) in his famous work, De Ad- ministrando imperio (cited as DAI).1 The Hungarians formed a tribal federation, which consisted of seven tribes (Nyék, Megyer, Kürtgyarmat, Tarján, Jeno, Kér and Keszi).2 A dissident Khazar group, consisted of three tribes and called Kavars (Qabars) revolting against the ruling Khazar government joined the Hungarian tribal federation before 881, probably in the 860-870s.3 The Hungarians - apart 1 For Levedia (Lebedia) in chapter 38 and Etelköz (Atelkouzou) in chapter 38 and 40 of DAI, see Constantine Porphyrogenitus, De administrando imperio. Their ability to record and influence the history of the United States has shown itself countless times throughout the country’s history, and although its power has moved through various mediums and time periods it remains a vital part of how Americans perceive themselves and the world around them. It is at once a mirror and a window; the problem is that this window is not always clear, and our mirror does not always show us the truth. The same was true in 1898. Newspapers were a vital source of information for almost all Americans. -
Nation Building Extended: Hungarian Diaspora Politics
Eszter Herner-Kovács Nation Building Extended: Hungarian Diaspora Politics The article aims to present and analyze Hungarian diaspora policy, the most recent aspect of Hungarian nation building politics. The first part of the paper builds on literature on various types of diaspora politics and tries to situate the Hungarian model in that frame- work. The second part introduces and analyzes the diaspora projects launched after 2010 in Hungary in order to realize the objectives of Hungarian diaspora politics. The paper claims that diaspora projects launched by the Hungarian government after 2010 form a coherent strategy aiming to reach the diaspora, to raise their awareness of their Hungarian heritage and culture, as well as to enhance their connection with the homeland. Diasporas and diaspora politics Academic interest on diaspora studies has been growing since the second half of the 20th century, which resulted in, as Rogers Brubaker argues, the confused use of the term “diaspora”.1 The numerous defi- nitions of diaspora usually operate with notions such as dispersion, community, collective memory and/or myth of a homeland, idea of return to the homeland, lack of complete integration into the host country, and responsibility towards the homeland.2 However, these descriptions of diaspora were adapted to the “various intellectual, cultural and political agendas” that became defined as diaspora, and thus the term has not acquired a consensual definition in the schol- arly literature.3 Brubaker therefore suggests that instead of thinking of diasporas as substantive entities and counting them as bounded groups we should rather use the term as referring to a “stance or a claim”. -

CRIME AND CUSTOM OF THE HUNGARIANS OF DETROIT E DMANN DOANE BEYNON As a factor in criminal causation, residence in a foreign language colony does not appear to have any constant or uniform effect. The importance of this factor varies with the degree of social solidarity possessed by the colony and with the type of background out of which its immigrant members have come. In the case of the Hungarians settled in Detroit, the amount as well as the type of delinquency and crime seems to bear a rather definite relationship to residence within or without the foreign language colony. I. THE HUNGARIAN SETTLEMENT OF DETROIT The migration of Hungarian immigrants into the Detroit area began about 1898, the year in which the Michigan Malleable Iron Company commenced production in Delray, at that time a small suburb on the Detroit River about five miles west of the central busi- ness district of the city. -

It deals with the intellectual activity of these exiles, especially through their cultural and educational institutions. Within five years of their arrival as dispossessed “D.P.’s,” they founded a Hungarian Center (“Centro Húngaro”) that housed, among others, a theater group, a free university, a cultural and scientific academy, a weekend school, and scout troops. At the same time, new periodicals appeared, and a substantive number of books banned in Hungary were published. I argue that it is due to the work of these institutions that the community flourished and is vital to date, in spite of its isolation and lack of reinforcement through new emigrant waves, and in spite of its hostile relationship with the government of the People’s Republic of Hungary and of a series of Argentine economic crises that forced many of its members to re-emigrate. I also discuss the impact the exiles had on their descendants, contending that as a result of the strong cultural foundations laid by them during their first twenty years of emigration, third- and fourth-generation Hungarian-Argentines have maintained to this day a strong cultural and ethnic identity, while fully integrating into Argentine society at large.
