Nicolaus Allen - HIST 240 Book Review DCeased Review

The book I decided to read was DC’s DCeased comic book series. It is a six issue series, (if you count the A Good Day to Die Special issue there are seven), that answers the age old question that Marvel Zombies answered almost a decade earlier, what happens when the Zombie Apocalypse hits the DC Universe. For the sake of the plot I will have to spoil the first issue, so spoilers ahead. The series starts after the

Justice League beats and once again kicks him off the planet. However,

Darkseid captured Cyborg and after ripping him open and binding a powerful weapon called the Anti-Life Equation to the literal physical embodiment of Death it created the

Anti-Life Virus. And after sending Cyborg back to Earth the virus is sent across the entire planet via the internet. Anyone who so much as looks at a screen that is connected to the internet is instantly killed and transformed into the Anti-Living.

That is the basic plot of the series and it is such an interesting way for the infection to spread. The moment the infection hit the internet over 600 million people were infected from just looking at a form of the internet. Which really does say a lot about our current times. Going along with that the series has one major lesson in all of the carnage and death. It talks a lot about just how isolated we as a society have become without the internet. One of the main causes of death in the series is the complete and utter shutdown of all non-radio communications. It is for this reason that I think this is a great series for students to read. The series focuses on a lot on just how disconnected we are from each other in the first half, and the second half focuses on what happens when we reconnect with other people outside of an online space. The series really is a more of a zombie apocalypse with superheroes than a story with zombies.
