There's Never Been a More Important Time to Know Our History
There’s never been a more important time to know our history. Understanding that the fundamental challenges we face as a society today are not dissimilar to those our ancestors faced gives us a fresh perspective on our lives. One of the common threads is music and, with that as its foundation, Sumach Roots (the album and live show) takes audiences on a bold and innovative exploration of Upper Canada’s evolution over the past three hundred years. The brainchild of two-time JUNO nominee and best-selling historian Jason Wilson, Sumach Roots draws from a deep well of sounds— from traditional British folk to bebop jazz and classic reggae—in order to tell the stories of those who built Upper Canada, both literally and culturally. With a top-flight cast of performers joining him on stage, Wilson delves into the late eighteenth century diaries of Elizabeth Simcoe, the impact of the Irish Famine, and the great Toronto fires of 1902 and 1904. With equal measures of humour and pathos, Sumach Roots joyfully illuminates the host/immigrant experience in Upper Canada. The album is a follow up to Wilson’s acclaimed Perennials (2016) and is the second part of his Valley Road Trilogy, a trilogy that celebrates “place” and its importance to history and memory. THE CAST JIM ARMSTRONG – James Pott / various Jim is a classically trained actor with a BFA in Acting from the University of Windsor. His favourite roles in the theatre include Detective Dick in High Park Noir (Simply Twisted Productions), Rosencrantz in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (Hart House Theatre), Jean in Rhinoceros (Seven Siblings Theatre), Ambituoso in Cousins of Corsica (Springworks Festival) and Tom from The Generation Gap (U of T Drama Centre). -

This is our 3rd anniversary issue, Natty Mark founding the magazine in June 2016, launching it at the 1st Mikey Dread Festival near Witney (an event that is also 3 years old this year). BRENT2020.CO.UK 2 THE A-Z OF BRENT’S BLACK MUSIC HISTORY This A-Z is largely a republishing of Kwaku’s research for the ‘Brent Black Music History Project’ published by BTWSC in 2007. Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps. 4 — Gendering Dub Culture Across Diaspora — Jamaican Female Dub Poets in Canada and England FRO-CARIBBEAN WOMEN DUB POETS have long incorporated feminist aesthetics into their work, thereby bringing a unique per- A spective to dub culture. Not surprisingly, then, and following in the tradition of Una Marson and Louise Bennett, the Jamaican Canadian dub poets Afua Cooper, Ahdri Zhina Mandiela, and Lillian Allen all employ an African- Jamaican aesthetic to articulate the social conditions of black women in Africa and the diaspora and to call for opposition to patriarchal systems of oppression and black male dominance in the private sphere. This feminist discourse in dub poetry is particularly highlighted in Canada because Allen, Cooper, and Man- diela have been so instrumental to dub culture in that country. While I focus primarily on these three artists in this chapter, I also include some reflections on the work of Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze1 of the UK to provide a comparative analysis of how these writers utilize local Jamaican cultures to articulate black female experience. While this chapter takes up race, class, and gender by female dub poets, this is not to suggest that earlier (as well as current) Jamaican creative writers have not also worked with these themes. However, it is important to note that, historically, dub poetry has been dominated by a male perspective and has focused thematically on race and class issues. This is a result of dub poetry’s strong black-nationalist and pan-Africanist ties as both philosophies have tended to overlook intersections of gender and race in their framing of political 1 Although ‘Binta’ Breeze often distances herself from dub poetry, I include her work because some of her poems clearly experiment with a dub aesthetic.
