What The Quantity Theory of Insanity is a fun sextet of loosely interconnected stories that tackle several of the themes - madness, medical misbehavior, time, boredom sadly, this freshman feel at fiction doesn't include Self's flair for violence and sexual depravity - which will go on to be the bread and butter of his later works. Can people at the back and the sides hear alright? Okay, thank you. Well, a very warm welcome to you all this evening for this event which is part of the Ego Media project which is a research project funded by the European Research Council looking at the impact of digital and social media on the way people present themselves. And it’s a great pleasure to introduce to discuss that topic with me tonight, Will Self who is, I’m sure you’ll know is the author of ten novels, five collections of shorter fiction, three novellas and five collections of non-fiction writing. His work has been translated into 22 languages; How the Dead Live was shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel of the Year. The Butt won the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for comic fiction in 2008. WS: Yes, thank God. MS: And Umbrella was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Will is currently Professor of Contemporary Thought at Brunel University, though his LRB sort of by-lines says that he does a lot of other things besides. And he lives in South London so we’re very glad to welcome him north of the river tonight. He’s been turning his attention lately to what he has called the bidirectional digital media and I’d like to ask about that a bit later. -

Lavinia Greenlaw and Will Self Evening Readings and Discussions (in English) 29 and 30 January 2015 Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Thursday 29 January 2015, 19.30 Lavinia Greenlaw Reading and in discussion with Dr Cordelia Borchardt Poet and novelist Lavinia Greenlaw was born in London and studied Modern Arts, Publishing and Arts History. Her published poetry includes the collections Night Photographs (1993) and A World Where News Travelled Slowly (1997). The title poem won the Forward Poetry Prize (Best single Poem). Her third collection, Minsk (2003), was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize. Greenlaw’s first novel Mary George of Allnorthover (2001) appeared in several countries and won the Prix du Premier Roman Etranger. Her second novel, An Irresponsible Age, set in London in the 1990s was published in 2006. She has also written two non-fiction works, The Importance of Music to Girls (2007) and Questions of Travel: William Morris in Iceland, published in 2011. Her most recent poetry collections The Casual Perfect and A Double Sorrow: Troilus and Criseyde were published in 2011 and 2014. 1 “The finger points backwards”: Satirical Endism and the 1990s Fictions of Will Self “The 1990s will come to be seen as the Gotterdammerung of periodicity itself [...] never again will the brute fact of what year it is matter so much in cultural terms” (Self 2002, 26) This chapter argues that contemporary British author and cultural commentator Will Self uses satire in his writings from the 1990s to interrogate the “endism” of the period. Challenging perceived conclusions to evolution, gender and time at the close of the twentieth century and interrogating interrelationships between love, anger, longing, power, isolation, dependence, hopelessness, depression, trauma, transition and crisis, his 1990s fictions present a controversial perspective on pre-millennial anxiety and search for a mode in which to speak of resulting anomie and doubt. As a genre of literature, satire can be traced back to Ancient Egypt and Greece, to the Romans and Medieval Europe. The role of satire as a mode of social commentary came into focus during the Enlightenment period, with seminal literary satires including Pope’s The Rape of the Lock (1714) and the writings of Jonathan Swift and Daniel Defoe. During the nineteenth century, this tradition was developed by the novels of Charles Dickens, the social satires of Bernard Shaw and the rise of the political satirical cartoon by artists including as James Gillray and publications such as Punch magazine. A trend for caricature and parody developed in the twentieth century with prophetic warnings about the future of the human race in Huxley’s Brave New World and Orwell’s Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty Four (1949). -

Rejecting the Empowered Reader: Re-Claiming Authorial Agency in Twenty-First Century, Avant-Garde Fiction (2016) Directed by Dr. Ben Clarke and Dr. Jennifer Keith. 207 pp. This dissertation analyzes twenty-first century British avant-garde fiction and argues that a defining literary issue is the shifting dynamic between writers and readers. In particular, the dissertation examines avant-garde authors and the ways in which they conceptualize their readers and their own positions in the literary market place. Contemporary avant-garde writers often claim that their authority has been transferred to an empowered reading public. I explore how material changes including new publishing trends and digitization have re-defined and even blurred the distinctions between authors and readers. I then contextualize these concerns by historicizing anxieties about control, readers, and the marketplace to better show how notions of authority are contingent upon shifts in publishing practices, the expansion of the reading public, and the economic conditions of authorship. In order to demonstrate how these evolving dynamics impact literature, I use the novels of Gabriel Josipovici, Jeanette Winterson, and William Self to show how writers use their fiction to both critique empowered readers and to restore their authority. My study makes the following critical interventions: First, scholarly works on members of the avant-garde have long argued that these authors ignore writing about “real” issues in favor of abstract ideas about literature, beauty, and art. I counter these claims by illuminating how contemporary avant-garde writers are in fact responding to the same economic and cultural pressures as those authors who write for mass audiences. -

SURROGATE DADS:INTERROGATING FATHERHOOD IN WILL SELF’S THE BOOK OF DAVE DANIEL LUKES “A father is a man who fails every day.”1 Abstract Will Self’s sixth novel, The Book of Dave (2006) develops the British writer’s ongoing interest in fathers and children, and fatherhood as a key nexus where masculinity and patriarchy are reproduced. The nov- el channels and critiques various types of narrative, including the “dad lit” genre, best represented by the popular novels of Nick Horn- by and Tony Parsons, the post-apocalyptic and dystopian idiolect science fiction tradition of Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange and Russell Hoban’s Riddley Walker, and social phenomena such as “new” fatherhood and the “fathers’ rights” movement. With wit, in- sight, anger, and compassion, Self’s novel engages and interrogates matters of paternity, patriarchy, power, the religions of the father, the malaise of millennial British working-class masculinities, and the question of what it might mean to be a post-patriarchal dad. The topic of fatherhood is one of Will Self’s major concerns, and spans the writer’s oeuvre from his early satirical fictions to his latter, weightier works. Self, who has four children, has gravitated through- out his writing to narratives concerning fathers and children, and fa- ther-son relationships, in particular ones that involve surrogate, non- biological, foster- and father-figure mentors.
