PRESS KIT , June 2017 The 2017 Brussels Comic Strip Festival

Brussels is holding its 8th annual Comic Strip Festival from 1 st to 3 September 2017

From their beginning at the turn of the century, have really become famous the world over. Many illustrators and writers from our country and its capital are well-known beyond our borders. That is reason enough to dedicate a weekend to this rich cultural heritage.

Since its debut in 2010, the Brussels Comic Strip Festival has become the main event for comics fans. Young and old, novices and experts, all share a passion for the ninth art and come together each year to participate in the variety of activities on offer.

More than 100,000 people and some 250 famous authors gather every year. For this 2017 edition, the essential events are definitely on the schedule: autograph sessions, the predecessors of the great Oldtimer Rally, the Balloon's Day Parade and many more. There's a whole range of activities to delight everyone.

Besides the Parc de Bruxelles, le Brussels Comic Strip Festival take over the prestigious setting of Brussels' Palais des Beaux-Arts, BOZAR. Two new places that pair phenomenally well together for the Brussels Comic Strip Festival. Festival-goers will be able to stroll along as they please, enjoying countless activities and novelties on offer wherever they go. From hundreds of autograph signings to premiere cartoon screenings and multiple exhibitions and encounters with professionals, ninth art fans will have plenty to keep them entertained. Finally, the Brussels Comic Strip Festival will award some brand new comics prizes for the first time: The Atomium Prizes, during a gala evening when no less than €100,000 will be awarded for the best new works from the past year.

This year the Brussels Comic Strip Festival is also celebrating good old Gaston's 60th birthday. To mark the occasion, the Spirou Festival is inviting the famous, sixty-year-old lazybones to the Brussels Comic Strip Festival. An exhibition, a musical performance, conferences - it will be impossible to miss this perennial blunderer.

As part of the MIXITY.2017 year and in keeping with the diverse nationalities that call Brussels home, the booths and activities on offer are multi-cultural and multi-lingual. A Méroll World: the exhibition celebrating 25 years of Requins Marteaux

Today more than one in three people in the world consume Méroll oil every day. One man stands behind this veritable financial empire: Édouard-Michel Méroll. A lecture on uninhibited consumerism, advertising propaganda, and globalisation, the A Méroll World exhibition is a 3D satirical fable. It illuminates all aspects of this marv'oilous adventure: a comic strip, an animated film (Once upon a time there was oil), quoted works of art, ambitious architectural projects...

He worked for publishers of that magazine in a dozen countries where he was able to apply his Latin culture and humour. Horacio Altuna's work is on display behind closed doors in one of BOZAR's rooms. Fans: keep your eyes peeled!

Directed by: Sunao Katabuchi Based on the work of Fumiyo Kôno - Kana Publishing Cast: Yoshimasa Hosoya, Daisuke Ono, Mayumi Shintani

Suzu Urano was born in Hiroshima. After she married she went off to live with her husband's family in Kure, a city with a naval base. Then came the war, and daily life became more and more difficult for Suzu. In the face of adversity, the young woman maintained a certain joie de vivre. Running the household, stocking up on supplies, enjoying life as a family and a couple, so many factors to consider under the challenging conditions that did not seem to improve with the first air raids. Would Suzu still be able to preserve her characteristic zest for life under these conditions?

Cartoon and manga screenings

Throughout the weekend, the kids will also be spoiled by publishers offering free showings of cartoons featuring their favourite cartoon characters:

Bamboo Publishing will exclusively present the first episode of the all-new Sisters series; Glénat Publishing offers you the chance to attend a very special showing of Titeuf the Film because it will be introduced by his famous dad, Zep;

Shows / Happening

TRAGAWDOUKOUTRRR: ode to the gaffophone

A musical show by Max Vandervorst

Bottlephone, porciphone, musical chair, nail violin, supermarket trolley, or flat vacuum cleaner: Max Vandervorst makes music with instruments that were not musical before crossing paths with this totally crazy conductor. With his partners (Frédéric Jannin, Thierry Tinlot, Frank Wuyts, Frédéric Dailly, and Stephan Pougin), he has made a hilarious tribute to the gaffophone, that mythical instrument of unrivalled destructive power. This just in: we have heard the gaffophone will be on stage at Bozar! Something to dazzle the eyes and ears of spectators of all ages...

Family show - admission fee

Gag Conference by Bernstein & James

What is humour? What does it want? What are its networks? With the scientific rigour of American car dealers and the natural charisma of Czechoslovakian physicists, Bernstein & James, famous authors of "Gag School" (Vide Cocagne, 2016), offer a mostly illustrated lecture of 43 minutes and 22 seconds dedicated to the phenomenon of humour, interspersed with practical exercises, debates, and key words noted live on poster-board.

17

Drawing Shows

The Brussels Comic Strip Festival is also the opportunity to attend unique performances thanks to the participation of exceptional illustrators:

- Kim Jung Gi is leaving his native Korea to give visitors the chance to watch him complete one of his impressive murals over three days. The Korean author will also be on hand during the festival to autograph his albums and sketchbooks. He will bring his brushes with him to the Jean-David Morvan fair.

- For the very first time in Brussels, Grzegorz Rosinski will complete a live drawing performance at the Brussels Comic Strip Festival. Come and watch this great master's painting develop and see the finished product when the weekend is over!

Conferences

A great many authors, specialists, publishers, and journalists will rotate through Bozar's rooms to offer visitors conferences, encounters, or round tables on subjects of burning interest in the 9th Art world.

So, for example, La Revue Dessinée meets the editors of the newspaper Le Soir accompanied by Medor. Together they will discuss the technique of comics journalism, which is becoming more common all the time. Zep and Fred Jannin, accompanied by Daniel Goossens, will pay lively tribute to the great "Déconnus Rex," Marcel Gotlib, who passed away a few months ago; Dupuis Publishing is preparing an exceptional conference series about Franquin, his work and his problem child, Gaston; several of the International Pavilion's foreign delegations will offer visitors the chance to learn about their countries' comics in greater detail...

18

Oldtimers’ Rally This year the Oldtimer Rally is also bringing its fair share of new things. In fact, it will invite other comic strip worlds besides Tintin Magazine to take part in this event. Over 100 cars and motorcycles straight out of the panels of these famous magazines will criss-cross Belgium.

The course is also changing. No less than four starts are planned, from Liège, Antwerp, Gand, and Brussels. The old-timers will gather at Place des Palais on Sunday, 3 September. They will be evaluated there by an special panel. To close out the event, they will stay on site for the entire day to the delight of young and old alike.

Balloon’s Day Parade Larger-than-life comic strip characters will storm the capital's major arteries. The Balloon's Day Parade is raring to go and display its gargantuan balloons to an ever-larger audience.

As is the case every year, an extra balloon will put in an appearance at the parade. So, for his birthday, Gaston will participate in this great adventure, defying his famous laziness!

Come and watch our friends be inflated on Sunday morning at Place des Palais. Then walk with them through the streets of Brussels. At the end, tell them "see you next year" as they are deflated on Boulevard du Centre.

All of this is just a small sample of what awaits festival-goers during the Brussels Comic Strip Festival's three-day run.

Other free activities for young and old, conferences, and screenings will soon enhance the schedule.
