Welcome to flu and cold season everyone! This season has hit pretty hard with the addition of the Corona Virus (COVID-19). With the severity of COVID-19 we decided it would be appro- priate to cover some symptoms, causes and prevention measures for our safety item this month. Physical health is an important component to safety. If an individual doesn’t feel well, the deci- sions to take shortcuts becomes easier, but not safer. An individual that is sick can also spread germs that can make others on site sick as well.

COVID-19 spreads mainly from person to person by sneezing and coughing. It can also spread by touching something that has the virus on it, then touching your mouth, eyes, or nose. There are several symptoms of COVID-19 which includes; fever/chills, shortness of breath, coughing or sore throat. Symptoms typically appear 7-14 days after exposure.

Those who have been infected have shown severity levels ranging from mild to sever. Most people that have contracted COVID-19 have recovered without needing medical treatment, however, there have been hospitalizations and death associated with this illness. Those that are most at risk are; pregnant women, children, and adults with underlying conditions (asthma, dia- betes, suppressed immune systems, heart disease, and kidney disease). These individuals are more likely to have complications.

There are several ways to protect yourself against COVID-19. The best way is through proper hygiene. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Do not touch your eyes, nose and mouth. Stay home if you are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue then throw the tissue away. Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces that are used regularly using a standard household cleaning spray or wipe. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water is not available use an alcohol based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

400 University – BN Builders We have been excited to begin our first project with BN Builders and couldn’t have picked a better one to start on. 400 University is the second new building site on the block (4th - 5th Ave & University - Union) after the first project topped out last year. In fact, this new project was already built up approximately to ground level, leaving BN Builders to complete the above-ground building. Our first tasks Pat and crew have been working on are to remove a large tower crane founda- tion, along with the building shoring from the perimeter of the site. We will move on to complete utility work as the project progresses. Thanks BNB for selecting us!

ACME Farms – Exxel Pacific Mark and crew just completed installing a ‘triple-tap’ – when you fit three side sewers into a single trench. This is but another large project in the International District, an area that has seen a rise in development in recent years. We will return at a later date to hook up their water lines and possibly complete some street panel removal and grading.

Columbia City ‘Alta’ – Exxel Pacific Sly and crew completed a rather challenging duct-bank crossing working alongside Bergelectric. Ex- isting utilities typically pose a challenge when installing new utilities. We had to make field adjust- ments to go over/under certain utilities to make sure we stayed within SCL standards and were able to pass our SCL inspection.

St. Thomas School – Sellen Construction Will and crew began the mass excavation phase 2 which consists of the main building mass excava- tion (phase 1 was the relocation of the maintenance facility and utility re-routing to accommodate phase 2). We have been required to over-excavate the extent of the site foundation and building pad up to 3 feet to ensure structural ground for building footing installations.

Costco Issaquah Parking Garage – Ferguson Construction Dustin and crew have been on time and material for the plumbers and electricians. We have complet- ed excavation for all pile caps and grade beams, along with the associated backfill and placed capil- lary break on one half of the south parking garage’s slab-on-grade. We will continue with the plumb- ing and electrical backfill on both the south and north building. Soon, we will re-start utility work out- side of the building as well as perimeter grading. To Fill You In (Continued from page 3) Holy Names – Andersen Construction Sly and crew have been hard at work completing a number of different tasks around this north Capitol Hill school site. We finished the bulk of the fire line installation and also completed extending the main storm drain outfall line to the edge of the building. We are currently com- pleting the sanitary sewer as well as excavating for several garage ramps. These ramps will re- quire working alongside the drilling contractor to install lag-board as the excavation is complet- ed. The Emerald – Andersen Construction Mark, Sly and Dustin’s crews have all taken part recently in moving forward with all the street improvement work for this site. Just like Holy Names, it has been a positive experience so far completing both utilities and site- work scopes in unison. We even worked with Epic Concrete Designs to install concrete bus-panels on busy 2nd Ave. We have removed building shoring and should hopefully be complete with our side sewers by the time this edition prints. We intend to finish all our scope on this project over the next month+ if everything goes according to plan.

Hinoki – Andersen Construction Mark and crew were able to complete a significant portion of the deeper underground utilities for this project. This in- cludes the storm detention system, some of its associated storm drainage piping nearby, as well as crossing 10th Ave with both the power and communication conduits (installed by Bergelectric). We also moved into excavating for the pro- ject’s temporary power which ended up being fairly deep (pictured). We hope to return soon to move in to building footing foundation work as well as completing more site util- ities in the coming month.

In Other News from Jon: There are many reasons why we have prospered for 82 years and four generations. None of these reasons are more important than our commitment to safety. We embraced the AGC Safety Team from the start. Initial qualification was set at a high bar and every year the requirements to renew are more and more stringent. The recognition is nice but the real reward is knowing that we are doing all we can to keep our employees safe.
