Intimate Live Girls Benjamin Halligan Keywords: aura, intimacy, kissing, authenticity, liveness, social media, spectacle, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Terry Richardson, Peter Gabriel Abstract: The arena concert requires a particular type of liveness of performance in order to transcend impersonal mass entertainment. Liveness here looks to authenticity and happenstance, privileges personal communications and seeks to live in the moment, and in this way the live performance then meets and matches or even surpasses the virtual life of the artist or group. The concert must be both mass spectacle and an individual and singular experience for those witnessing and participating in it. Without these latter essential attributes, which can be read as the auratic and authentic replacing the virtual, the arena concert falls short of ontological expectations of live music. In recent years the mise-en-scène of the arena concert has become calibrated to female artists with, seemingly, a concomitant feminisation of the event. In this, the space is often given over to intimacy, empathy, and presented as an insight into the life, and even philosophy, of the performer.

Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records 181 Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America Tammy L. Kernodle Today’s absolutist varieties of Black Nationalism have run into trouble when faced with the need to make sense of the increasingly distinct forms of black culture produced from various diaspora populations. The unashamedly hybrid character of these black cultures continually confounds any simplistic (essentialist or antiessentialist) understanding of the relationship between racial identity and racial nonidentity, between folk cultural authenticity and pop cultural betrayal. Paul Gilroy1 Funk, from its beginnings as terminology used to describe a specific genre of black music, has been equated with the following things: blackness, mascu- linity, personal and collective freedom, and the groove. Even as the genre and terminology gave way to new forms of expression, the performance aesthetic developed by myriad bands throughout the 1960s and 1970s remained an im- portant part of post-1970s black popular culture. In the early 1990s, rhythm and blues (R&B) splintered into a new substyle that reached back to the live instru- mentation and infectious grooves of funk but also reflected a new racial and social consciousness that was rooted in the experiences of the postsoul genera- tion. One of the pivotal albums advancing this style was Meshell Ndegeocello’s Plantation Lullabies (1993). Ndegeocello’s sound was an amalgamation of 0026-3079/2013/5204-181$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:4 (2013): 181-204 181 182 Tammy L. Kernodle several things. • Ray Shulmanand Gentle Giant's
RAY SHULMAN AND GENTLE GIANT'S FUNNY, PROGRESSIVE WAYS — ~ by Andy Goldenberg CC hallenging!” If I had to choose one wordto describe the music of Gentle Giant to. the uninitiated, challenging would be most apt. Arising out of the ashes of Simon Dupree And The Big Sound, a hard-working R&B unit playing the pub circuit in and out of London in the mid-60s who scoreda UK Top Ten hit in 1967 with “Kites” (B-side w/ “Like The Sun Like The Fire”), Gentle Giant releasedits self-titled debut album in 1970, consisting of a mixture of blues, rock, and soul while infusing a touch of the progressive elements that would so set apart Gentle Giant from its fellow and (unfortunately) frequently moresuccessful British counter- parts: King Crimson, ELP Yes and Genesis. The Giant would release 11 studio albums and onelive album from 1970-1980. To-state that Gentle Giant's music was progressiveis a tremendous understatement. The band’s music was an amalgamationof rock, classical and choir, as well as iree-form meestructured sha eaea slaaoo hard rock style of 1973's Octopus (short for “Octo-Opus” or “eight musical works”) Gentle Giant's music conveys a search, be it - the search for childhood, evidenced on 1972's Three Friends, or a search for truth in the political process, as on 1974's The Power And The Glory. GG’s music emotes an almost - medieval/minstrel-like feeling with the multi- tracked vocal BONERS being the band’s 7 trademark. Gentle Giant's live shows were legendary, _ - often featuring various members switching instruments.

Seasons of Poetry Seasons of Poetry Creative Writing 1B 2011-2012 This is a literary magazine composed of the poems written by Mrs. Sturgis’s first block, b-day Creative Writing class. They are arranged by the season they fit, the seasons going in order of winter, spring, summer, and fall. The Season changes with the font. Lifeless All has failed. The air smells of danger this is no longer Like leaves blowing in the wind, just a ride home. the days pass by Panic quickly follows confusion Beginning to feel dizzy a million questions my body gave way race through my mind faded snapshots of memory lured by flattery, are all that remain. deceived by ignorance captures Used, like a slave, Like a dirty wash rag I knew things have gone too far. tossed, and thrown aside, His touch seeming so soft and sincere stepped on, had drastically changed bearen and revealed and torn the demon inside of him. more and more Pushed, slapped, and shoved. each day The chained cuffs over and over again. binding my wrists to a post I asked why they won't let me die make an unpleasant screech the urge to live as rust collides with rust. is what made me thrive. Throughout my survival I can't help I've learned to achieve but to think of my mother's sweet smile and for those of you as the clothes that are naive are torn from my body be away my insides scream frantically, that this could happen like a lost child for its mother.
