Emily’s barrel raised about $200 for the Zoo. “Rain barrels are a great tool for conserving water and saving money, but some people are reluctant to use them because of their usually plain, unappealing appearance,” said John Nelson, a representative of SaveLocalWaters.org and a public relations specialist. He continued, “We believe that turning rain barrels into beautiful works of art will make them more desirable, so we’re pleased to collaborate on this event to raise aware- ness and encourage the use of rain barrels throughout the region.” The rain barrel Emily designed included a wide vari- ety of butterflies and a field of flowers. The softball team is having a fantastic season so far. They are 9-2 in league and 10-4 overall, only one game out of first place behind CHCA, whom they beat last Saturday. The Cougars are being led by freshman Briahna Bush’s great season on the mound as she has thrown 68.2 innings with a 0.82 ERA and a WHIP of 0.54 at press time. Mr. Gillens, the team’s coach this year, also commends catcher Ashley Veldkamp for her perfor- mance. They are also being led by the fantastic job at the plate by junior Jenna Monk, who is currently hitting .581 with 9 HR and 26 RBIs. Like many of the CCS girls teams this year, many of the players are freshmen and sophomores. Only two seniors are on the roster: Kayla Stacy and Cheyenne Wilson. At press time, with only two more games left this regular season, the Lady Cougars have a great chance of winning the MVC Championship or at least sharing the title with CHCA.
