Xavier University - Men's Basketball - 3800 Victory Parkway - Cintas Center - Cincinnati, OH 45207 - (513) 745-3417 - (887) WE ARE XU Sharpshooter Hamilton has best aim in league 3 POINT FG % 1999-2005 THIS YEAR 170-570 55-120 29.8% 45.8% Shooting may have become the lost art of basketball lately, but Richard Hamilton is turning back the clock. His no frills, picture- perfect make the 6-7 of the Detroit Pistons statistically, at least, the best shooter in the NBA. When it comes to putting the ball in the basket — from anywhere on the floor — Hamilton stands alone.

"Basketball is more than crossovers and slam dunks," Hamilton said. "It's shooting. It's fundamentals. It's not complicated."

Going into Monday's games, Hamilton, 18th in the league in scoring with a 21.8 average, is the only player shooting at least 50% (51.2) from the field, 40% (52.0) from three-point range and 80% (87.3) from the free throw line. Two players accomplished the feat last season — of Phoenix and Jason Terry of Dallas.

Hamilton's total shooting percentage (field goal percentage plus three-point percentage plus free throw percentage) of 190.5 is tops in the league among all players who are averaging at least 10 points a game and have made at least 10 three-point shots. Nash is a distant second at 181.6.

Hamilton is perhaps the best in the league at moving without the basketball and coming off screens. He has a quick release, the patience to not force shots and is so disciplined that his form very seldom breaks down.

Before this year, Hamilton never shot better than 45.5% from the field or 38.1% from three-point range in his previous six seasons. He has benefited from new coach ' flex offense that capitalizes on Hamilton's ability to get open but also gives him freedom to create shots for himself.

He is perhaps the league's best mid-range jump shooter, getting most of his points in the 15-18 foot range on catch- and-shoot jumpers.

"It's fun to play in this offense," Hamilton said. "I'm allowed to move in a motion-type atmosphere, and it allows me to elevate my game even more." Before he retired, Indiana's , now a TNT analyst, was noted as the best at moving without the ball. He gladly passes that torch to Hamilton. "If you want to know how to get open and get shots on the court, just watch Richard Hamilton," he says. "He makes me proud."

Hamilton's Detroit backcourt mate, Chauncey Billups, is third in total shooting percentage. The pair is major reason the Pistons are second in the NBA in total shooting percentage, shooting 46.4% from the field, 40.7% from three-point range and 74.6% from the free throw line for a total of 161.7%. The Philadelphia 76ers lead the league in total shooting percentage at 161.9%.
