Thursday, August 20 - The Hawks are participating in the NBA Draft Lottery for the third consecutive year … Atlanta enters the Lottery with its 2020 first-round pick currently at the fourth position with a 12.5% chance of landing the first overall pick, a 55.3% chance at a top five selection and a 36.6% chance at the top three. - Last year, the Hawks secured the eighth and 10th picks in the Lottery … The eighth pick was Atlanta’s own pick while the 10th selection was the Mavericks’ first-round pick (obtained in the 2018 draft night trade which included the draft rights to Trae Young) … Atlanta entered the 2019 Lottery at the fifth position (own pick) and ninth position (Dallas pick).

Beginning in 2019, the NBA’s modified lottery system took effect. The odds for the remaining teams in the 14-team lottery decreases gradually after the top three, with approximately a 1%-2% difference between lottery teams.  The number of picks determined by the lottery is four (compared to three under the prior system). This means that the team with the worst record can receive no worse than the fifth pick, the team with the second-worst record no worse than the sixth pick, etc.
