  • Amphibians and Reptiles of the Erie Islands
No. 1 HACKBERRY BUTTERFLY LIFE HISTORY 11 AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES OF THE ERIE ISLANDS THOMAS H. LANGLOIS Department of Zoology and Entomology, The Ohio State University, Columbus 10 Near the western end of Lake Erie, there is a series of islands which were so notable for their snakes when the Jesuit explorer, Bonnecampe, visited the region on October 5, 1749, that he referred to them as "Les lies aux Serpentes" (The islands of snakes). A French soldier (J.C.B.), enroute from Presqu'ile, near the eastern end of Lake Erie, to Detroit, spent the night of July 21, 1754, on one of these islands, and recorded in his journal (1941) that his party killed 130 rattle- snakes before they dared to sleep. The map made by Chaussegros de Lery on August 4, 1754, bears the name used by Bonnecampe, but the map made in 1755 by dAnville and the map made in 1766 by Mitchel label them "Les lies aux Serpens a sonette" (The islands of rattlesnakes). The following description of Lake Erie was published in 1806, in the first American edition of Brooke's Gazetteer. It suggests that Lake Erie was more noted for the snakes of its islands than for its geographic features. Erie, Lake, in North America, lies between 41° and 43° N. Lat. and 79° and 84° W. Lon. It is 290 miles long, and 40 in its broadest part. The islands and banks towards its W. end are so infested with rattlesnakes, as to render it dangerous to land on them. The lake is covered near the banks of the islands with a large pond lily; the leaves of which are thickly spread on the surface of the water to an extent of many acres; on these, in the summer, lie myriads of watersnakes basking in the sun.

Vol. 28, No. 1 Spring 1995 THE GREAT LAKES ENTOMOLOGIST PUBLISHEDBY THE MICHIGAN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY --- -- 1995 THE GREAT LAKES ENTOMOLOGIST 55 GROUND BEETLESOF ISLANDS IN THE WESTERN BASIN OF LAKEERIE AND THE ADJACENT MAINLAND (COLEOPTERA:CARABIDAE, INCLUDING CICINDELlNI) K. W. WiIl1.2,F. F. Purrington1, D. J. Horn' ABSTRACT We report 241 species representing 63 genera of ground beetles from the islands of the western basin of Lake Erie and selected mainland sites from a 1991-93 survey, plus specimens examined in public and private collections, and previously published sources. Most species are generally distributed; however, a restricted population of Sphaeroderus schaumii schaumii we redis- covered is no doubt imperiled. Comparison of wing morphotype fr~uencies of the Lake Erie island species with mainland populations from studies in Ohio and Michigan su~port a hypothesis that vagility is of increased import in the islands. RegressIOn and correlation analysis show a positive relationship between species number and island area, no correlation between species num- ber and distance from the mainland and an improved fit for a multiple regres- sion which includes collecting effort. The beetle fauna of the islands of Lake Erie has not been studied inten- sively. Inventories of other terrestrial invertebrates such as Lepidoptera (Nault et al. 1989),spiders (Beatty 1988)and isopods (Dexter et al. 1988)l1ave been published. Lake Erie's western basin archipelago contains 22 islands which are of land-bridge ori~ (Fig 1). Water filled the Erie basin ca. 4000 years b.p. isolating pre-eXlsting dolomitic and limestone hills as islands (Forsyth 1988). Oak and maple forest, typical of the region, were most likely predominant on the islands.

Austin Smith was the first keeper of the lighthouse six months after it was built. Despite calls for the light to be discontinued due to a lack of harbor traffic, it remained until 1870. In that year the lantern room was removed from the tower which resulted in complaints from residents regarding its aid. In 1883, piers in the port were extended into Lake Erie which prompted congress to act in 1895 on the construction of a new lighthouse. The new lighthouse was constructed from wood and went into service on the outer end of the west pier in 1896.

  • How Many Islands Are There in Lake Erie?
How Many Islands Are There in Lake Erie? There are at least 37 “real” islands in Lake Erie, but an exact count depends on what you decide to include or exclude. (Also see the last page for two very different counts of 1,752 or 2,176 islands and an explanation of those.) The four types of islands that cause a counting problem are • Islands that existed in the 19th century but now either connected to the mainland or submerged, e.g., Catawba Island, Gull Island, Long Point Island • Islands not quite in Lake Erie such as Johnson’s Island in Sandusky Bay or Bois Blanc Island at the mouth of the Detroit River • Artificial islands, such as the ones that the Southeast Shoal Lighthouse off Pelee Island and the Detroit River Light sit on. • A large number of tiny unnamed islands, mostly off the Michigan shore and off Long Point, Ontario So the exact count of islands is at the reader’s discretion. But here are the islands to consider. Groups 1 and 3 below contain the 37 “real” islands in Lake Erie. If you take out the three that are now permanently connected to the mainland (Catawba Island, Presque Isle and Long Point Island), the count goes down to 34. Groups 2 and 4 contain 9 other islands that are sometimes mentioned as Lake Erie Islands, even if incorrectly. The names of all 24 of the islands in the Bass Island Archipelago are in boldface. These are all 15 in Group 1 and 9 in Group 3. Group 1: The 15 Core Ohio Islands: Ohio’s Bass Island Archipelago in Ottawa and Erie Counties Island Inhabited? Comments Ballast YES Small island with 9 homes and no scheduled ferry service.
