Literature: Poul Vad, "Hammershøi - Værk og liv", 2003 pp. 175, repro- duced p. 180. Here Poul Vad describes Hammershøi's landscapes and ex- plains how he picks up the tradition from the landscape painters of the Romantic period such as Lundbye and Skovgaard: "Instead of painting the emotion’s sincere but unsentimental connection with the landscape upon the canvas, Hammershøi depicted the dual experience of heartfelt empathy and impassable distance; and instead of painting what is near and distant together in the successive connection inwards into the space of the landscape, he left out everything that could attract attention to the foreground and instead focused sharply on the middle ground; he based the image on the dialectic between the measurable extent of the horizon- tal plane (from one edge of the frame to the other) and the immeasurable deep space of the air's (and heaven's) perspective."

There is no better way of describing Hammershøi's way of painting the landscape, and the description fits so well with the present painting.

It is a painting that with its delicate, subtle colours belongs to the finest tonal paintings within Danish art. Hammershøi has achieved a truly impressive textual effect with the fine reflections in the sofa’s polish, and the composition has none of the emptiness, which often characterizes the living rooms of Hammershøi."

Sophus Michaelis and Alfred Bramsen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Vilhelm Hammershøi no. 318.

Hammershøi's landscapes are unique for their time. His landscapes do not resemble the landscape paintings of his contemporary fellow artists such as Theodor Philipsen, Hans Smidth and L. A. Ring. Most often Hammershøi paints a civilized, orderly nature, as in this painting, with its neatly planted trees. Note also how impulsively Hammershøi has placed many small light brush strokes in the sky, which causes it to vibrate.

Hammershøi positions himself at a 90-degree angle to his motif. The road and here the lined trees are oriented towards the sides of the frame and are in parallel to the picture plane. In the work of his contemporaries, the road is typically perceived as a direction leading into the motif and pro- vides depth and movement. With Hammershøi the quiet vibration rests in the brushstrokes, the light and the colour in an otherwise silent horizontal universe.

Portraits of fellow artists was a popular motif in the Danish Golden Age - often the paintings show an appreciation of warm friendships as well as professional respect and admiration towards the portrayed. When Jerichau arrived for the first time in Rome in 1838 he received a warm welcome by the painter Ditlev Blunck. Jerichau has described their first meeting in a letter home to, among others, the painters J. Th. Lundbye and Th. Læssøe (in Danish): "I was standing ... alone in the Café Greco; there were no Danes in sight: Hansen, Roed, Marstrand, etc. had all gone away. A German told me where Blunck lived, and from that moment on I suffered no more." (Nicolaj Bøgh, "Erindringer af og om Jens Adolf Jerichau", 1884, p. 71). This portrait is from the beginning of Jerichau's stay in Rome, where he lived almost continuously for 10 years.

Portraits of fellow artists from Rome in the 19th century are shown right now at the exhibition "Venskabsportrætter fra Rom" at until 22 May 2016. DKK 20,000 / € 2,700

The infantry is being inspected. In the background a bridge. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 87 x 115 cm each. Unframed. (3). It has not been possible to establish what event the paintings depict. It has been suggested that they are scenes from the Battle of York- town in 1781 during the American War of Independence. Another suggestion is that the paintings are made for the house of Orléans, ca. 1780. The cavalry may be the Orléans-Cavalerie who wore blue uniforms with light blue facings and the infantry may be Orléans' Infantry in red uniforms. DKK 40,000-50,000 / € 5,350-6,700
