The Islamic Center of Long Island, ICLI, is an organization which serves the needs of the Muslim community of Long Island. A center for worship, community engagement, Islamic education, and cultivating interfaith relations. Since its inception in April 1982, the brothers and sisters belonging to ICLI have been working day and night for the cause of Islam, seeking only the pleasure of Allah (swt). I personally invite you to contribute to the center’s ongoing projects, whether it is a small or large contribution, all are welcome. We all are familiar with the most famous proverbs “Time is money” and “Time is Gold”. Time has great importance in the life of a human being. Humanity has always been anxious with time, the passage of time, the measurement of time, and the scientific qualities of time. Time is a blessing on all of us. We should concentrate on how we use time ac- cording to our Islamic perspective. Allah Almighty has clearly stated the value of time in the Quran. We should make the use of time wisely to increase our faith in this life and the hereafter too. Our beloved Prophet (SAW) said about time in a Hadith: “There are two blessings which many people lose: (They are) health and free time for doing good” (Bukhari). From this saying, we can conclude that we should utilize our time for doing good deeds for the sake of Almighty Allah’s plea- sure. We order our lives around time and in Islam lives are structured around the daily prayers. We should offer prayers on time which are obligatory on every Muslim. In Islam, believers are encouraged to be certain of time, to know its importance and to organize it intelligently. If human beings do not waste or abuse time, but rather think of it as a bless- ing from Allah (swt), then they have every reason to hope for success both in this life and in the hereafter.

    In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful U.S. MUSLIM RELIGIOUS COUNCIL ISSUES FATWA AGAINST TERRORISM The Fiqh Council of North America wishes to reaffirm Islam's absolute condemnation of terrorism and religious extremism. Islam strictly condemns religious extremism and the use of violence against innocent lives. There is no justification in Islam for extremism or terrorism. Targeting civilians’ life and property through suicide bombings or any other method of attack is haram – or forbidden - and those who commit these barbaric acts are criminals, not “martyrs.” The Qur’an, Islam’s revealed text, states: "Whoever kills a person [unjustly]…it is as though he has killed all mankind. And whoever saves a life, it is as though he had saved all mankind." (Qur’an, 5:32) Prophet Muhammad said there is no excuse for committing unjust acts: "Do not be people without minds of your own, saying that if others treat you well you will treat them well, and that if they do wrong you will do wrong to them. Instead, accustom yourselves to do good if people do good and not to do wrong (even) if they do evil." (Al-Tirmidhi) God mandates moderation in faith and in all aspects of life when He states in the Qur’an: “We made you to be a community of the middle way, so that (with the example of your lives) you might bear witness to the truth before all mankind.” (Qur’an, 2:143) In another verse, God explains our duties as human beings when he says: “Let there arise from among you a band of people who invite to righteousness, and enjoin good and forbid evil.” (Qur’an, 3:104) Islam teaches us to act in a caring manner to all of God's creation.

Weiss All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT In popular Western culture and media Islam is widely reified, flattened, and treat- ed as a static, monolithic entity. Monochromatically negative depictions of Islamic edu- cation betray a lack of understanding of the diverse personalities, pedagogies and purpos- es found in Muslim schools. Even those presenting Muslim schools in positive light often fail to communicate Islam’s socially constructed and contested dimensions, minimize the significance of interpretive disparities among believers, and diminish the associated con- flicts potentially experienced by members of Islamic school communities. The United States boasts approximately 250 full-time Islamic schools, serving thirty-two thousand students of a growing Muslim population, and yet little research exists discussing the cur- ricular content, pedagogical methods, and ideological orientations of these institutions. My study took place at Tafsir Islamic School (TIS), a mid-sized K-12 private Islamic school in a metropolitan area in the Midwestern United States, and seeks to answer two questions: (1) by what means are specific versions of orthodoxy and orthopraxy con- structed, maintained, and challenged in the Tafsir community?, and (2) how could the general interpretive climate corresponding to these processes be described in theoretical terms? Qualitative field work was conducted at TIS over an 18 month span, involving semi-structured, one-on-one interviews with 20 adult participants, including teachers, administrators, and involved members of the community.

Since this is a matter of Fardh Kifayah, and at least one fardh fast, Zakat dates, ‘Iddat dates and the Muslim calendar are all at stake, the Ulama Kiram have been working diligently to solve this issue. Historically, Ulama Kiram have invested their faculties and resources, to the greatest extent possible, in order to solve such contemporary issues. Twenty years ago, the Muslims of North America mostly followed the proper moon sighting system in accordance to the Quran and Sunnah without any dissention. Gradually, a group broke away looking to follow the Saudi moon sighting announcements. Some named this ‘global moon sighting’ while others claimed to be following Makkah Mukarramah by this newly invented idea. In 2006, another group broke away from the pure and authentic system of monthly moon sighting according to the Quran and Sunnah to replace it with astronomical calculations.
